Romney instituted socialized Health care as governor resulting in a dramatic increase in both the size and power of government and subjecting citizens to new fines the choose not to participate. The democratic turnout in the primaries was 150% of republican primary turnout. The democratic base is well energized. The Rs are not I believe that Mitt knew he couldn't win in the general. The loser in a general seldom gets the nod by his party again. Romney must have seen that the writing on the wall says Republicans won't win and is saving his one shot wad for 2012.

I noticed on Huckabey's face the distain he had for Mitt at one of the last debates when Mitt was asked about his money. If looks could kill his would have. The south still has many miss conceptions about Mormons and there is a lot of ugly things still said about them today. It also helped Huckabey in the south because all the babtised preachers could tell their people to go vote for him. The leadership of the Mormon faith would not ever do that. They are free to choose.

I cut Romney a lot of slack for changing on abortion. He had a dear, close relative die from an illegal abortion. That happened in real life. It was not a political strategy. He had a struggle with the role of government even though he opposed abortion and couseled women against having abortions. As Governor, he could not bring himself to sign anti-life legislation and emerged pro-life.
