@fuckamericanidiot Wasn't the band leaning over his shoulder to learn from the master ? Devo were heavily influenced by his input in Roxy Music ,and his solo work. "Here Come The Warm Jets",was a template of how Devo wanted to sound. Consequently "Are We Not Men" sounded almost like a Eno solo project. So much for "having little of his own input".Concerning 'Anal'..Eno probably was adjusting to a bunch of enthusiastic young Yanks, eager to get some unusual sounds on tape.
@PAULLONDEN just because roxy and eno were a big influence doesn't mean he had a big influence on the recording of the record at all, and besides the songs were already fully formed before eno's input. they weren't pupils needing to be schooled and if they were, they were worse off for it in my opinion, their 70's stuff is vastly superior to FOC onwards, give me the hardcore stuff any day
Yeah man, Devo is a group you either love, or really hate. One great thing about them is that they could play techno without ANY automated crap - every single thing they do is played manually, except of course for some of the synth arpeggios. No other band has done that to my knowledge.
@Barry7777777 Actually, Devo have used a fair amount of sequencing and programming on their records and in concert. They also started incorporating drum machines around the time of "New Traditionalists" in 1981. By the time of 1984's "Shout," all beats (and virtually everything else) were programmed in the Fairlight synth-computer, which is one of the reasons drummer Alan Myers left the band. I, personally, don't think programming and sequencing is a bad thing, I'm just sayin'...

every aspect of this is awesome...the awkward drumbeat, the Benny Hill jerky movements, the bass line, the 3 guitars and the vocals

@MagikDick It was pretty amazing. Fantastic cover. They made an iconic song all their own. They were very cool, very punk at the time.

who cares Mark now does music for films and The Rugrats. That first album was superb. Had the record and saw them perform it live. Brilliant.

@blickumblickum yeah and it's bob 2's moment to shine!

@blickumblickum Good point, surely the best cover of this tune. Eno's production got the best out of this lot though.
PAULLONDEN 10 months ago
@PAULLONDEN actually eno said he found them 'anal' and had jerry leaning over his shoulder at every second so ended up having little of his own input

proffesornutbutter 3 years ago
i prefer this to the residents cover, i think this sounds backwards, the residents cover just makes me laugh quietly to myself

aye i agree. the residents cover is just a joke, i think its meant to spawn that feeling haha
