If you're an anorexic midget maybe changing the bulbs on the Megane is a doddle. However, for the larger-than-wimp-sized guy it's a nightmare. Renault say it's made this way for 'safety'; so how come VW achieve the same EuroNCAP rating? And just how safe is it to have to stand at the side of a road, jack up a car and take the wheel off just to replace a bulb? I'm surprised the Brussels Eurocrats never outlawed this car on elf 'n' safety grounds. This is another reason why I won't buy French cars
Although disabled I'm a competent mechanic and electronics engineer. I can replace headlamp bulbs on my 19-year old Volvo 940 in less than a minute but, on each occassion I replaced bulbs in my wife's 53 plate Megane, I struggled. The N/S required the wheel to be removed and took 25 mins. With the O/S removing the wheel did not make it easier and this took 45 mins. That was at home on a clear day. I'd hate to do this at the side of the road at night in pouring rain. A definite design fault.
@bowridgefarm Yeah same here! It did take me about 10-15mins though to figure out the knack of the little spring clip! I didn't remove the wheels, but was told by Halfords this is what I needed to do. You can even access/see the right light from the engine by removing the plastic trim under bonnet, above the headlight. 2 bulbs changed in 25 mins. Next time though it'll be 5 mins now I know what to do. In this video they clearly asked for someone whos never done it!
That green flag guy is a retard. takes no longer than ten minuets! you dont need to take wheel off, just turn it into the arch. This is making a big deal about nothing.
They design it that way becouse of what....Safety...???Fuckers disign it that way to make more money on service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Reanault...Never again...
after going on megane owners club website to get instructions i watched this video and started to worry as i'm really bad at anything mechanical. Just changed my bulb without taking the wheel off in 25mins (cold and wet), green flag should be ashamed of the guy thats representing them on this video. it is fidly but i should be able to do it in 15 mins tops next time. dont worry save ya money and hav a go
they said by a renualt dealer, the guy you brought isn't a renualt dealer and doesn't know this type of car. it's enough to turn the wheel all the way to one side
............are people serious? My bulb went, so worriedly after hearing its a pain on the Megane I had a look on the internet, first thing watched this video and thought, 'pants' then looked at one more site with a brief description of what to do, changed it with no problems within 10 minutes.........simple as.
There is no need to remove the wheel in case of a Megane!!! Just steer (in this case) to the right, remove the plastic cap and there you go, It takes max. 5 minutes for a 6-years old child...
Been quoted £52.75 today to change bulb. Bought bulb for £17.75 and getting local garage to fit. If they charge £100 would rather give them the cash than those shisters. Will never buy a renault again
okkk...that mecanic it is stupid.you don't need to take the wheel off......and i did it in 15 min. both bulbs...Megane it's a nice car....and it's working just fine for me.Only 5.9 litres(diesel)/100km.....and it's more beautiful than that Golf.
I found that when replacing the passenger side headlamp, removing the battery gives better access than the wheel arch access panel if you having trouble. Also, Halfords in St Helens wont fit the bulb under their £5.99 fitting option, although the Widnes branch are happy to do it.
I think it is all about finding the right garage for this job. I tried both branches of Halford in Southampton and they said they couldn't do it at all. A garage in Bittern charged me £25 but didn't do it properly and it failed MOT as it did not generate the pattern (?). Natianwide in centeral Southampton did the job for me in less than 20 minutes for £12 all inclusive.
There is a nack to it but once you've done it once you'll be able to do it in 5mins. Halfords is definetly the best place to get it done if your struggling: Megane dealirship quoted £80, Kwickfit quoted £30-50, Halfords do it for £4.99 there and then so if you can't be bothered with all the fuss take it there!
Shoot me for saying this, but in a W169 A Class, it's actually piss easy once you've worked out how the new bulb locks into place. I mean, yeah, the car tried to eat me (finger trapped) but still, old bulb out and a new one in took about 20 mins - INCLUDING the time it took me to flick through the manual, given that it was the first ever time I had changed it.
Difficulty in changing the headlights is not a Renault only issue (Astra and Focus offer the same hassle).
Today I went to my Renault dealer (because my headlight had to be changed), and found out they do the job for free (only had to pay for the bulb = € 10,77). They did it in under 10 minutes...
This car is awful. I owned a 2004 1.6 for 2 1/2 years, and 3 headlamp bulbs went costing me around £180 total.
Apart from that the alarm, sunroof, ECU, stereo, sunroof, ignition coils, cam shaft, exhaust sensors, gearbox, clutch, and a fair amount of trim was all replaced.
Maybe I was unlucky?! I advise to steer clear and buy a Golf or a Focus...

What a load of crap. just went to Halfords and they did it in about 2 minutes. Could have done it myself and saved £5.
This stupid program cost me £5 but it could have cost me a lot more if I had go to a garage.
