"Peter Gun Riff" at 2:12 -way cool and before it was even a blink of a Thought . Great Band ,Hands Down . "When the Musics Over Turn out the Lights"...
Not that it all didn't rock, but @ 3:00 totally hit the peak!!! I'm surprised the hippies all doped up could keep up with this acid rock! (LOL) Alvin and the boys were a head of their time. Remember my Dad getting me into "A space in time" and I still listen to that album, or cd now and again when I wanna hear a real guitarist.

I was fortunate enough to work with drummer Ric Lee - he taught drums in my school and guest solo'd with the Peak District Jazz Orchestra when I directed them. The band (TYA) was still touring without Alvin but Ric was touring his band memoirs. Nice chap (and his wife Alice was lovely too!) - Great rock & roll!!
Lots of Marshalls, definitly..He used to go into Jim Marshall's shop, try 'em out and pick out his favorites..Usually he would use one 100 watt head with 4 speaker cabs, or 16 speakers, to avoid speaker distortion (he prefered amplifier distortion only..) Also, heavy bass strings and light strings on the top 3 for easy solos and bending..
I still have my ticket stub. Orpheum Theate in Boston 1974. I used to see them & The Allman Bros evrytime, for a few yrs back then. Dont remember too much,! cept me sayin "just like the record" A Great Time time musically to be alive.
I saw them perform this in the early 70's in Boston when I was in the Navy. This song went on for at least 12 minutes. He had the crowd going crazy. Possibly one of the best concerts I ever attended. The only 2 bands I enjoyed more than that concert were Humble Pie (I was at the Filmore East when they recorded "Rockin The Filmore"), & Grand Funk (When they were still called GF Railroad).
@macdwhac u r lucky u see them live in original group..I think fillmore east and west were closed because of health and safety hazard ..as alvin lee said that the fillmore east is not safe if there's a fire broke out..there was no fire exit among the artist and the only way out is the audience entrance ...
Truelly a once in a lifetime performence ,,man i wish i was there youll never here this song be played like this again not even on there records is it even close to sutch a jam !!! They definitly were one of the greatest bands at the time !!!

Notice the amplifier behind Alvin has "ELP" marked on it. Isle of Wight was also one of ELP's first major gigs.
Someone mentioned the TYA Live at The Fillmore CD. It was only released within the last 10 years. It captures them a few months after Woodstock at their peek in 1970. Undead catches them in their infancy - before they recorded many of their best tunes. Its great - especially if you want to hear them "raw", but check out the Live at the Fillmore recordings as well.
Amazing performance!!! By someone who had a Damm brain in the 60's and wasn't tripping on acid and Smak every day..who told the hangers on to F***off! Long live Alvin Lee!!
@Lukestar1991 problem was early glory...the only thing they could do( well) at the time was playing fast, all the slow and medium stuff being very poor...So the gigs were boring until they started rocking Good morning little school girl and I'm goin home, and that was it... Alvin Lee has gotten much better with age, since he had to keep playing for a living... For some reason, he's not playing with Ten years after anymore, but you all know what it's like, being on the road for 30+years!
@Lukestar1991 ... And one of the most underated guitarists... I love Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Beck and the others, but I don't think Alvin Lee is worst than them... In fact I think is the best rock and roll guitarist ever...
this calibur of musician no longer exists, i mean i dont want another jimi or page or alvin, clapton etc.... i just want a true bluesman. where is he?
I hear you. It is too bad many young players all sound the same and all wanting to play as fast as they can with all these arpeggios. After awhile they all sound like they are practicing their scales and no feeling. It gets old after awhile.
i totally get that! as a young musician myself, I would love to have a sort of blues-rock revival, but I'm a drummer, so I dont have as much control over that.
That being said, I freakin' love Ten Years After! this song rocks sooo much
Nottingham Boat Club in the early days :) Wonderfull time!
Best Guitarist? Heard this argument on every Rock post on the Tube. Pht. Just sit back and enjoy the sounds and skills of the early guys. Leo Lyons, you made me put away the Les Paul and pick up a Gibson EBO. It took a great Bass guitarist to keep up with Alvin, Chick and Rick. Inspirational!
Alvin was 25 years old when his band played this gig. What a great performance. My friend who used to see them at the Marquee Club in '67 said that they did a LOT of speed.
people have detuned long before that moment. Albert King played in standard dropped down to C long before anyone heard of Alvin Lee. and Jimmy Page actively detuned his guitar during performances, check out early versions of Dazed and Confused. Of course Jimmy was a master thief so he might have picked it up from some one else.
Bass player, Leo Lyons, fretless bass! thats how you know you listening to a master. there is a fast clip of his bass with no frets, 2:58, have to stop and frame by frame it, at about 2:54, dudes going so fast cant film him!! haha weeeeeeee man!
RollingStone 100 didn't have Alvin Lee,Chet Atkins,Steve Vai,Paul Gilbert,Rory Gallagher or Billy Gibbons!!Iommi 86? Angus Young 96? Gilmour 82? Roy Buchanan 57? Neil Young 83? Van Halen 70? Johnny Winter 74? That list is no authority on music.
Good grief, Rolling Stone is a joke--it's more of a marketing forum anyways, they really cannot hang anymore. It would not tell us much anyways, e.g., how do you compare and then rate players like Alvin Lee and Keith Richards, or Page, or Les Paul himself, or Cliff Gallup? The list goes on and on and on . . . Rolling Stone has not had a clue in many years, they're always trying to push some singer-songwriter on everyone as the "voice of a generation".
Finally someone who knows guitar playing! :) How nobody included John McLaughlin, Beck, Zappa and Howe in a list of great rock guitarists is a testament to word-of-mouth knowledge, not real knowledge. We've all left out Carlos Santana, Robert Fripp, Steve Vai and is colleagues at G3 and a slew of others.
You are pretty narrow minded to music,...to say 1.SRV,2.ALVIN,3.Allman.....lol, How about you title it the TOP 3 MAIN STREAM guitarist. Those people dont even make my top 20 yet alone anywhere on my list,....thats how much music you been missing out on. OH well your loss,...keep listening to clapton,..page and Jimi....lolol
Did you even read what I wrote?,...You obviously have been corrupted by mainstream radio to think SRV is god. SRV's music was very average music,....stold alot of his songs from early Bluesman. Shit!, Johnny Winter,..Roy Buchanan,..Jeff Healy all kick SRV's ass.
No I guess I didn't read it through all the way but even so, Liking SRV does not mean I am "Obviously corrupted by mainstream radio." thats pretty ignorant to say. Yes i agree that Johnny Winter and the others are great guitarist's but the FEELING that SRV had in his songs were unmatched

The list goes on and on and on . . . Rolling Stone has not had a clue in many years, they're always trying to push some singer-songwriter on everyone as the "voice of a generation".

no rolling stone didnt even put alvin lee on their list of top 100, when he should be at least in the top 5

Hey what about.. Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page, Steve Howe, etc.

Everyone's list is different, Alvin Lee should definitly be up there, I dont think Rolling Stones top 100 list even had him on it, did it?

You are pretty narrow minded to music,...to say 1.SRV,2.ALVIN,3.Allman.....lol, How about you title it the TOP 3 MAIN STREAM guitarist. Those people dont even make my top 20 yet alone anywhere on my list,....thats how much music you been missing out on. OH well your loss,...keep listening to clapton,..page and Jimi....lolol

I agree Totaly with your top 3. Srv is a GOD! haha
Jenisonc 4 years ago
Did you even read what I wrote?,...You obviously have been corrupted by mainstream radio to think SRV is god. SRV's music was very average music,....stold alot of his songs from early Bluesman. Shit!, Johnny Winter,..Roy Buchanan,..Jeff Healy all kick SRV's ass.
Napco205 4 years ago
No I guess I didn't read it through all the way but even so, Liking SRV does not mean I am "Obviously corrupted by mainstream radio." thats pretty ignorant to say. Yes i agree that Johnny Winter and the others are great guitarist's but the FEELING that SRV had in his songs were unmatched
