He is thinking of Kyukushin Karate and Goju Ryu, Shotokan karate has the weight evenly distrubited like Taekwondo which comes in part from Shotokan and uses a slightly more linear stance. A linear stance is superior to a circular stance in moving backward and foward, honestly Bass would lose to Lyoto, though low kicks are the only thing that have a chance against Lyoto except maybe really good defensive straight punches.
