There was a Golden Age of football a long time ago, in a culture far, far away. Gerd Muller was a large nugget in that epoch, along with Best, Cruijff, Beckenbauer, Puskas, Di Steffano, Pele, and many more. Those were the Wild Years of Football, a time when the game was well organised, well funded, yet viriginal to the concepts of sponsorship, corporations, private investors, mass media, the middle class moron, the tie-in, the TV advert, etc. "The pleasure was the play!" as Lemmy sings...
@GordonMorrice Absolutley spot on. I wasn't around for this era of football but I'm drawn to it much more than the highlights of football from the past decade and a half.
@GordonMorrice Well first of all: Of course Pele played in the 1950`s and 1960`s so he was for sure part of that "golden age" - But Puskas only played in the 1950`s which have "football-wise" nothing to do with the 60`s and the 70`s.
Di Steffano a great player?! Di Steffano is only a "Real Madrid legend" but he has never been considered to be a "world football legend" or legendary player in the eyes of football-fans!
Beckenbauer was probably the most complete soccer player ever and certainly would make my top 5 ever list but speaking only on the offensive side of the ball Germany has had alot of great strikers like Klinsman,Rudy Voller etc but no one was as good at putting the ball in the net like Muller in my opinion.
Best striker ever
