You should never run any laptop or note book etc all the time from the mains, you should take the battery out. When you buy it new charge and fully drain the battery 3 times and then take it out only using it when you are going out the house. The battery will have a much longer life.
great video. I was waiting for a minimalist approach to laptops and this one is it. Not surprising there are several models this exact size coming out but most are much more expensive. The "One" stands for 1 kilogram(2.2lbs)weight. I bought one, it's excellent, but you have to get the BLUE one with XP and 120 gig HD, and 1gig Ram.
im getting the Blue one from WalMart, its $348.00 USD, I am basically going to use if for taking notes in Bible Study, in school, especially during the upcoming Christmas Play, and is excellent for taking with me on long trips to Rocky Mount, NC. It truly is the perfect size, I mean who needs a external CD drive, I use my current laptop for that, and plus I already have a external disc drive so I am all set.
Haven't come across one yet as they're not out just yet. I assume you can do everything you can with any other Windows PCs (with all the pro's and con's that go with that). I'll ask and see how "open" the system is.
Remember it has no DVD/CD-ROM drive so I'm curious to see what they come up with to get round the installation limitations...
As the slot is, to put it nicely, extremely-user-unfriendly (we're talking RAM soldered directly to the motherboard, I'm told), the operation MUST be done by Acer. In other words, it's a send-in job.
That's pretty unfortunate, but I guess 512MB should be enough for Linux to hum along quite nicely. I'll probably end up splurging on a 6-cell battery though. By the way, the One is being sold here in the states now, not sure about Italy but I believe it's available in Europe, or will be in the next month. On a side note, Italy is a very beautiful country! You're lucky to live there! Finally, do you work for Acer? Thanks!
That's my guess too. The one I borrowed had 512MB and it was pretty zippy. I'll also have to see about the battery. The thing with Linux is this instant-on feature. When you can turn the thing on, check your mail and turn it off in under a minute (or thereabouts), even a battery life of two hours suddenly becomes enough for an entire day...
In the world of video previews/reviews of laptops, this one really stood out as excellent. Thank you for doing this video Acerguy, I just ordered an Aspire One a few minutes ago.
Offcourse one can always use a small USB extension cable and stick the divice on the back of the screen (parallel), or something like this, but it is not easy to put the laptop in a slim bag, so it's going to be removed after each session.
There might be also the possibility to hack it inside the computer case connected directly to the board.
But it would be far better to see an internal HSUPA option available from Acer - not blocked to a specific operator, one can already have a 3g data plan.
I have no idea about the 3G plans on the Aspire One. I DO know that they will be available in WiFi+3G or WiFi+WiMAX configurations by the end of the year, but whether or not these will be tied in to specific operators is another matter.
Also, I'm told they won't work with Vodafone 3G USB modems like mine as the application to activate it isn't available yet, but Acer is working on a patch which will soon be be downloadable direct from the Acer support site.
Yeap, I have a small USB 3.5G stick (OEM from Huawei model E169 - witch also has a 1G micro-SD card inside and can use the new/future UMTS900 band for beter inside buildings network availability) but I feel it's dangerous when this USB stick is plugged in the laptop, because if I unintentionally touch it harder, it might break the laptop USB port as well as the stick itself.
I borrowed it directly from Acer (my biggest client). Call it luck.. But I only had it for 24 hours. It's now somewhere in Austria... sob. They come out soon though. VERY soon.
Since a 3G USB modem sticked on side reduces portability, I hope we can get the internal 3G (HSPA) connectivity (at least in Portugal please:)
Anyway, this seems a much more attractive option than Eee 701 (actually it's going to be the first low cost UMPC that hopefully will be available tomorrow in Portugal) selling for about the same price predicted for Aspire One :(299Euro)...
Have you seen the 3G modem sticks from Vodafone? They're really small and I have one. There is a single USB on the left side of the Aspire One which is between the VGA out port and the Storage Expansion slot so it wouldn't get in the way.
All Aspire Ones will be WiFi enabled and shortly (not sure if at launch and if my info is correct) there will also be the option of 3G or WIMAX enabled models too. Even in Portugal ;-)
This is great news:) I'm looking forward to see it here on shops.
I'll have to sufer a bit more waiting for Aspire one and watching some people with Asus 701 (that just started to show up on local shops). Still waiting since OLPC old times :(
just ordered mine on amazon,,, CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!

is the screen glossy/glass or is it matt plastic like the old notebooks?

The official specs say it's a "8.9" WSVGA high-brightness (typical 180-nit) Acer CrystalBrite™ TFT LCD, 1024 x 600 pixel resolution"
The word "CrystalBrite" means it's shiny like high-end Aspire notebooks.
TheAcerGuy 3 years ago
What is the maximum resolution that aspire one supports when connected to an external display?
Thanks!

It is, but not by you.

I've ordered one and it should arrive on the 26th July so I guess that answers the question of availability in Europe (Italy).
FYI, Italy has it's moments. Great ones and really really bad ones. LOL
Yes I do work for Acer but not directly. Check out TheAcerGuy blog and you should see what I do for them (copywriter). Call me the Scoble of Acer :-D
