  • Love this.

  • I wanted to buy a house that is less that 1,000 square feet, maybe 400-600? Good luck. In Gilbert, AZ they won't allow you to build anything smaller than a certain footage. I love the smaller houses, and have been saying for years that we don't need a lot of space. Feng Shui. Smaller houses, less waste, more time for yourself because you're not paying a lot of money. It's what I can afford, though I wanted less.I do wish small homes would be the norm and not the exception.

  • being feminine has left so many of the female gender...what a shame. What she going to do when she gets to old to change the propane tank or drive her house around. Quite odd.

  • @MsCampobasso This has nothing to do with being feminine or not. Just because she's older, and will only get older, doesn't mean she's helpless. If she can build her own house and be independent enough to do something like this on her own, I think carrying a propane tank and driving a truck will be the least of her issues.

  • I love the idea, but it only works if you are living alone. What about living with a family... kids, etc? It's a little more difficult.

  • A great way to live that is becoming more popular. Living to pay a big mortgage, high utility bills and property taxes, and spending so much time doing maintenance on a large home isn't really "living." The time freed up by living a simpler life with more personal time is what life is all about. Every time I move, I get rid of more stuff. I think about all the boxes I have packed away and how much space I really use currently, and a tiny home makes sense to me. Soon...

  • wow i would love to live in one of those, so small and cozy.

  • This looks like a child's clubhouse.

  • This is so exciting! someone living within their means!

She can live in that thing, except for a small problem.

No running water, no shower or toilet.

This can be fixed, move into a mobile home or RV park that has this, but in order to be really practical it needs at least the basic services.

  • You Go Dee ! Such an inspiration. I can't wait to get my Tiny house completed. I'm vlogging on my experience and progress.

  • do i need some permit to do my own tiny house on trailer?

  • This is brilliant in so many ways, of course there are pluses and minuses to living in a home this small. It must be a wonderful and liberating feeling to not have a mortgage, not be a debt slave to the banksters and of course the low overhead is another big plus.

    .......

Two issues that concern me are the following: (1) Fire - In case of fire and the front door is blocked, are windows large enough to exit, and (2) In case of high winds, chance of being blown over.

    ......

    Kudos to this Dee.

  • @MACKATTACK1970

The fire issue would be less of an isssue than a typical overly large house because, well, there is much less material to burn. Her windows look adequate. I'm putting 2 doors in my Tiny house.

As for being blown over, consider the number of similar sized RVs on the road. They don't typically get blown over. However, look at how many typical sized homes that suffer damages each year from Tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, etc. With this, just hitch up & get away from harm.

  • @Livinggreen100 Part 1 - I agree with you in that she can hitch up and move, that is of course if she has enough time, sometimes as in Joplin, Mo last month there wasn't advance warning but I disagree in case of a fire purely because she is much closer to her kitchen, propane tank, etc.,

    ..

Having said this I am sure she can take precautions and hope she does, for example smoke and fire alarms, fire extinguishers that are readily available and windows large enough to get out.

    ..

    Continued.part 2

  • @Livinggreen100 Part 2... again I must stress that I envy this woman and anyone else who is downsizing and telling the banks to take a hike. The 30 year mortgage that the average American took out and in 95% of the instances never paid off was a scam. This woman Owns her own home, most people can own a small home and overhead is minimal with Peace of Mind being the greatest outcome of this lifestyle.

    ....

I can't do a house this small but never again will I own a McMansion.

    ..

    Good luck to all

  • love this

  • I loved Dee!!!!! She is so awesome! And super funny! She has the best grinch face that she makes haha... She is my cousin and is so awesome! Wow! :) Love you Dee!

  • I Love evolved Chics : )

  • I don't *know* Dee, but from watching her on this and other videos, I have to admit -- I've a very, very warm spot in my heart for this gal! :-)

  • Ok, sounds like fun, but I wonder where you can put this. The movie depicts her driving around with the house, but you couldn't just plunk it down by the side of the road,or in a corn field you'd need to own land. What other alternatives would there be to place this home? An RV park? Also, loading it onto a big truck and driving the home around kind of defeats the purpose of living cheaply. How much fuel is she burning in her big truck hauling her big load?

  • @jagjava , if you watch the other videos on williams' house, your questions will be answered.

also, you could simply engage your common sense to answer yourself- i.e., if she has more time and money to offer her friends and neighbors, then how eager do you think they are to donate a tiny bit of their property for her to place her house?

second, by using largely biodeisel, she's able to use any kind of discarded vegetable oil (or make her own via fermenter) to power her car. i.e., peanuts.

  • 1. I agree that cosiness and warmth are much more important than luxary.

    2. When you live alone you don't need lot of space, but not everybody lives like that. One person in big family (even in big house) has not much space, it may be even less than your's.

    3. In other countries a lot of people has even less of personal home space.

    4. I can't say how much your house enviromental freendly realy is, but your car... I guess it's avarege size american car.)

  • The difference of course is here at least is what is worth the money is the land, a house itself does not appreciate unless in a good area, here at least so might be an idea to invest in some land, unfortunately land in better areas they won't let you put your tiny house on. She never explained how her sewage and drainage works either.

  • Dee rocks!

  • I have seen so many stupid millionaires in America, and yet most of the people purposely living simple lives are the people with intelligence.

I guess intelligence doesn't equal monetary ambition.

  • I wanted to do something like this a few years ago. Maybe not one that could be on a trailer, but a micro home or a yurt. I instead bought a house for 290k, it is now worth 140k. Years from now when I get out of this mess I will for sure not listen to others and do what I want. I will live in a very very small house, hopefully made by me...

  • @kidballistic : You can do it very inexpensively in Guatemala, where I'm doing it too. Long Live Small Houses!

  • I'm about to build a 1500 sq ft home on my Dad's land, I hope to do it for less than $20,000. I was curious, how much did this little trailer cost?

  • Did that woman say she can fill that 9kg gas cannister for 5 dollars? here in new zealand it costs 30 dollars to fill those

  • @Cdogpyjamas About 20 in Canada.

  • @clawdfrawg 20 Canadian dollars equals 27.80 New Zealand dollars, so your LPG is cheaper. Yes I would have no problem living like this, of course heating with LPG does cause a lot of condensation. The house this lady has would be really cosy for a single person.

  • I wonder how the hell she insures that car lol. What would you say to the insurance company? I mean would you have to insure your HOUSE and your car? xD lolz!

  • Having these energy-hogging sub-divisions are extremely harmful to the U.S.A's carbon footprint, but are a TOTAL necessity. Subdivisions, where high income, usually 4+ person families can live, and be an even bigger consumer. SO many people don't realize it, but their jobs might rely on these sub-divisions.

  • Wow, your house is built better than my house that I spent over $350,000 on it. Watch My Money Pit, parts 1-3.

  • The message I get from this is that you dont have to be a slave anymore to any corporation. You can build yourself up instead of private company.

  • helpmebuymyfirsthome . webs . com

  • Sounds like my fiance and I. We live in a truck camper on a campground year round although it has a full bathroom and all. We pay $1,040 a year that includes electric, the ground to put it on plus extra to entertain and a shed, includes water, an in ground pool and hot tub for all the campground folks though. We save between the two of us $120,000 a year with both our jobs combined. We want to be able to have more when we grow older.

  • that would suck to live in when in canada

  • Comment removed

  • i saw this on tv!!!!

  • You do NOT want a car accident on your car.

  • I love her approach to life! This works for her and that's what truly matters. For me, I'd like to live in a park model home, perhaps with a loft, nestled in the woods. Not too big, not too small...but just right! I rate this five stars; wonderful job.

  • Gahd, one thing I hate when she pulled up in that suburb, and I just knew she'd pull up in in a new one, is the fact that there is urban sprawl. I HATE that. I'm living in a 35 year old house right now, and in the lazy middle of getting rid of clutter and stuff I no longer need, but at the same time bought a 9 pack of refillable waterbottles at Costco, and I can't WAIT to live in the same situation as she...I just hope Hubby goes along with it.

  • I already have the purchase price for one of these homes. I only have to work my job for five more years and then I can take an early retirement and live a life of true freedom! The way life is SUPPOSED to be in this supposedly "free" country.

  • That would be good. In my state of my country, you can't sleep on public land (or private of course). If you want to go to a national park you have to pay anywhere from $5 - $20 per night that you are parked or camping there..

  • The car is bigger than the house. And whenever she needs to go to the shops or get some groceries, she will be driving that huge car around all the time just because she needs it to drag the little house. How is that good for the environment?

  • She said the truck runs on bio-diesel.

  • This is great thing. My wife and I have decided since we sold our home and moved back north that we would buy a piece of land and build a house with no more than 1,000sqft. (2 bedroom 1bath)yes that is a lot to some but we have two babys and need a little more but will see as we go along. We will pay cash for everything and live a simpler life than what we've had in the past. We want to travel more and this would be great for that...home away from home

  • You go girl. I'd do it too, if I lived on my own! Right on!

  • the indians did not pay any taxes nor rent the last 10,000 years they lived this land....free food too !

mortage is a new brilliant invention only the last 100 years

  • i wouldn't say brilliant...

  • That's for me!:0)

  • $300,000+ for a condo in the northeast or less then $50,000 and low utilites and no property tax. Sign me up!

  • Cute cabin! Practical? Wood is high maintenance. Drive around a big diesel guzzler to haul a little 8'X10'?. Where is bio-diesel sold? No trailer parks (much less, KOA's, Wal-Mart parking lots, state/federal parks, etc.) would accept her if she wanted to travel, be more self sufficient. Cute and a moral behind it, YES! Realistic? Harshly restricted. Great job , though!

  • Not true about not being accepted in trailer, etc.

  • The only drawback I see is the fact that she "poaches" off of friends and neighbors to find a place to put her home...eventually she will definitely wear out her welcome as all guests eventually do...but if she can find people who are willing to pay the mortgage while she "poaches" then more power to her...everyone needs to own property eventually...

  • "everyone needs to own property eventually... "

I heartily disagree! Owning property with a home that I cannot sell in this economic climate is preventing me from fulfilling my dream of being a full time Tumbleweeder and world traveler! There are millions of acres of public land in the US that you can live on...and if you pay taxes, you are entitled to enjoy that public land.

  • beautiful. I couldnt live in such as space but I admire her ability to challenge the reality around her. minimal is simple. simple is elegant

  • Its cool if you want a house, and you want to travel, to get a set up like that. And a utility bill of $5 a month? I'll take that. No property taxes? deal!

  • Thanks for posting this vid of Dee up! I've already seen the other video of her home :D

  • Beautiful house and Dee has an awesome personality... Two thumbs up for greener living! :)

  • I love this house and could live in it all the time and travel. Just wish I had a partner to go along....

  • This is Great! I got some plans myself and hope to build a tiny house too someday. I have a 1450sq ft house now, and I spend more time fixing/improving than I do actually living in it or going out to do fun stuff. this would be a great release to go out and do other things without getting caught up with the rest of the rat race.

  • Where in this "house" would you go in the event of a tornado? I like this idea for a week-ender but not permanent. I'll take the slab foundation, and a bathroom closer to the center of the house. It gives me a little more to hope for when mother nature gets a bit angry. Not that this is a guarantee, but at least you feel like you "might" just make it. Last I checked, I couldn't fly without a plane or heli, and prefer not to be thrown into my neighbor's "house" at 150+mph. That's just me though.

  • in the event of a tornado (assuming she is in tornado country) she could just drive away with her house. Easy as that.

  • LOL! As I told mafrick40205, I'm from Texas and this would never work. You'd be on the run every other day! Crap, gotta go, I think I hear one coming now.......

  • You think that Greater Portland sees a lot of tornados?

  • I'm from Texas. I was speaking from the perspective that I owned one of these. It is a cool idea, but it would not work for those who live here. That goes for OK, and KS as well. As for Portland, I couldn't speak, never been there. Thanks for the reply.

  • She has alot of new hi-tech stuff, not to mention a nice truck and trailer, not at all what a "broke hippie" would be dealing with.Dont hate on someone just because they choose to do something. Peace

  • That's a profound insight!

  • She works for a living, not broke, whats wrong with not being materialistic and choosing to live a simple life? ALL women should be this way. =P

  • Exactly! I love it lol, the options out there for the non materialistic life are so few and this one just screams "financial freedom" its not like if your sick you lose the roof over your head type deal either and heck if theres no jobs in one area just keep traveling till you find one just to grab a meal if you need one, I adore this Idea! I'd give up my 2100 sq foot home for this any day, all I do is put money into this bad boy and I personally am sick of this financial trap too

  • :@Taino187 : Amen and Well Said!

  • :@Taino187 : Amen and Well Said! In fact, all people should live this way. We do in Guatemala and I wish we did here in the states, too.

  • i saw her on tv:)

  • I actually like the idea of the mobile home park. If you could put enough people together to buy and old run down park, rehab it and set it up like a co-op with a common

    them.

  • The only lots I have seen in that price range are 40 miles from the nearest gas station in Bohuunk Oklahoma. (no offense Bohuunk)

How about on the edge of a small town or city,

were you might be able to earn a living?

Im sorry but I have been looking at this problem for years. Everyone wants to dream about the dwelling when the truth is an inexpensive dwelling is not that big of a deal

Its finding an "alternative land" idea thats tough.

  • Check around the Keystone Lake area.

I have seen lots come and go on craiglist in the last month that have run between $3000-$5000.

Keystone goes through Sands Springs which is right next to Tulsa so you would still be next to gas stations, shopping, and jobs.

  • No one ever askes the real hard question?

    were do you put it?

    Mooch off friends and family?

The structure is the easy part. Finding a cheap place to put the struture? Thats the hard part.

  • That's not terribly hard.

I know where you can get rv type lots for $3,000-$4,000 with about $100-$200 a year in taxes/fees (regional prices will apply).

Some even come with an electric pole and running water.

A septic system will be a little more expensive, but many will have a septic service in the area.

I'm not talking about a trailer park either. These lots can be found around lake areas where they just give you a small 50x50 or 100x100 foot plot to rv park or build.

  • In certain areas you would have to classify this as a RV and make it mobile but on their website you do have the option of building one stationary with a foundation and sewer/septic.

I'm interested in these tumbleweed homes and the dome homes. Does anyone have info on the cost of a dome home?

  • Rock on Little House Woman! You're showing the world how to live simply and that's great. With all the Earth's resources disappearing quickly it's people like this who are the most well adjusted!

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhh?

  • I have a goal to own my house before I die I want it to be disaster proof We will pay off the land first then I plan to build the dome home it will be smaller but not as small as hers. You can be conservative if you design yours properly. Dome homes are tornado proof use 1/3 the energy of a traditional home. With a dome you can go off grid and live well. We are all going to be fighting over food pretty soon anyway if the truckers are squeezed out of work you will have no food in those BS homes.

  • Absolutely love it!! This is the most progressive thing I've seen in a long time. We're downsizing right now and this gives me ideas.

  • deepseas, What do you mean progressive? It is a tow-behind camper with no electric or plumbing. Although it does look nicer than most factory-built campers.

  • Definition of Naive: Lacking worldly experience and understanding, especially: 1. Simple and guileless; artless 2. Unsuspecting or credulous

Yeah, like people who watch this video and don't realize they are looking at a wooden camper. These have been around for more than one hundred years. I actually have a photo of one from the year 1901.

  • clamluvr...I was being facetious without putting down this person's idea of a home. I would never intentionally put anyone done publicly. That shows ego, insecurity and arrogance. You know, like America acts toward the world while it collapses within itself. Karma...

  • deepseas, Yeah, right. I think the term we are looking for here is "backpeddling". That is when you realize you goofed and try to talk your way out of it.

  • ClamLuvr, I've seen you comment on several of these tiny house videos, I really wonder what you have against them? Did one land on your mother or something?

  • RockabillyRandy, I don't have anything against them at all. I just noticed that people are being silly and naive. There are still 40,000 Hurricane Katrine victims living in FEMA travel trailers. People think that is a tragedy. But then people see one person living in a travel trailer by choice and think it is the coolest thing ever.

Also, people think Jay Shafer's "houses" are new and revolutionary. But the same kind of wooden travel trailers have been in existance since the late 1800's.

  • Oops, I meant Hurricane Katrina. Yeah, I know how to spell it.

  • clamluvr...I was being facetious without putting down this person's idea of a home. I would never intentionally put anyone done publicly. That shows ego, insecurity and arrogance. You know, like America acts toward the world while it collapses within itself. Karma...

  • Boasting about a tiny house in the suburbs might feel good, but it's a more confrontational (and perhaps overall less effective) way to bring more green awareness to the masses.

I don't pretend to know what codes might prevent this, but could she live near a mall to raise awareness? Or even better-- a public library where programming and materials displays could boost education?

Telling people how much better your choice is/worse their choice is tends to divide people, not unite them.

  • notalolcat, Her "house" is exempt from building codes. She built it on a cargo trailer. She calls it a house. But legally, it is a camper.

  • You know, I like these tiny houses, but I agree--she's kind of full of herself. Buying a tiny house doesn't make one better than anyone else. Me? I just want a tiny house because I don't want to have to clean a bunch of stuff, and I like keeping my life as simple as possible.

And why the f*ck would someone move their tiny house to a neighborhood to put it on display? Kind of defeats the "eco-ness" of owning a tiny home, does it not?

  • The car is eco-friendly. It runs on bio-diesel, "60/40 mix". Also, if you're going to call someone stupid, learn to spell first.

  • I admire her very much. She has learned how to downsize, and love life, and living more simply. I wish I could do that, but I save everything, and have tons of STUFF! She is a free spirited, and down to earth person. We need more people like her!

  • for the last 2 years I have been doing the something similar. Its amazing how much money a person can save. I rented a small house, dont have a TV or even much furniture. Everything I own can be packed into my car. My life is much simpler and I dont have to worry about losing my job. I realize being single helps, but I can live on a 8$ an hour job and still save money. Now I have true freedom in my life. I can be very mobile and not tied to a job or a place. For me its very invigorating.

  • the BIGGEST problem I see with these houses is that you have to have a monster truck or SUV with it. Which seems to defeat the point.

If they could make them light enough so a micro truck like a suzuki sidekick or grand vitara could pull it then it's a winner all around.

I just hate the idea of having to own a gas guzzler monster for the camper/house.

  • you dont have to own the gas guzzler, you can just rent a truck each time you want to move the house, If you are going to live in an area semipermanatly

  • Well, the point of these houses is just that, a house, not an RV. They just happen to be able to be portable. I think Jay's idea was to own land and put the house on it.

  • Yeah, I know another reason he makes them portable is to skirt around some zoning issues. Some towns don't like houses this small because it lowers property values, they'd rather you take on enormous debt and a bigger chunk out of the environment. Making them <120 sq. ft. and putting them on wheels puts them in a different category, like a loophole. I love it because when our New England winter comes around I'd just unplug, move to a warmer spot, and plug back in for three months.

  • Looks like the west side of Olympia, WA. The development is out Mud Bay Road.

    Pretty damn sweet.

  • Im working on one juuuuuuuuust like, cant wait to be finished with it. Great Job!

  • Hey! You'll have to put up a video of the process!

  • After researching various alternative living arrangements, I am convinced this is a real solution to the shelter problem. Imagine the possibilities!

  • I am finding that having a big house full of stuff is a real burden - and expensive too. I was happier when I lived in a 1972 VW bus. And before that I lived in a tipi! Hmm, I think it is time to escape the corporate rat race. Ii don't have any illusions about saving the planet. I just want to save myself.

  • your negative

  • where is this located?

  • Anywhere she wants to go :)

  • This is amazing.....she is a true leader in that she is doing the thing that many of us would like to do!!

  • Leader schmeader, haven't caravans(trailers) been like that for YEARS and years and... ?

  • Fabulous! She has done almost exactly what I want to do except I don't have a big vehicle to haul it around with
