  • drivers were really fearful of fire in those days and got as far away from their cars as quickly as possible

  • @gelar27 Instinct I guess, but in doing so he became...depending on your sources...the only person hurt in the accident. Cut his hand on the wire. Remember, only 2 years removed from the inferno of 1964 so perhaps he was afraid a fire would break out.

  • I viewed this classic in a closed curcuit theater in Tampa Fla in 1966. A friend took me to see it when in the USAF back in 66.

  • We were in turn three up to then, and din't see any of the big wreck.

    But Jimmy Clark spun out in front of us TWICE, which cost him the win.
