I'm getting there. Doing those bass notes are the real trick but keep it slow at first like he said and should have it by the end of the day. Great vid Justin!
Sooooo hard to keep the thumb going through this lick. I have been playing a lazy man's version of this where my thumb drops out at certain points. Great lesson here...really breaks it down.
@stannardbill I like the phrase boldy stole there like it's a greek legend or something. And lo, they braved the howling wolves and the smokestacks of lightning to boldy steal the riff for the common folk and the common folk heard the riff and were so afraid!
Just REALLY weird!! I was just listening to this song! Love the Wolf. If you play guitar and don't play blues it's like being a chef and never cooking with any delicious greasy fat.
Hey awesome riff... I learned this off a Sawlon video about a year ago. This also happens to be the riff playing on the current Viagra commercials... Thanks Justin!
very informative! thanks for the lesson on a classic blues riff :D

correction to my first reaction
i meant hawkins instead of dawkins:p

Also John Lennon stole part of it with "Do the Oz" and the Kinks with "Last of the Steam Powered Trains".
daregularperson 1 year ago
@daregularperson
And Dale Dawkins did the same with his Suzie Q
CCR probably didn't took the riff from Hubert Sumlin but took it along from Dale Dawkins while covering Suzie Q.

Check out Primitive by The Groupies. It is by far the most raw and evil rendition of Smokestack Lightning. Amazing. Second to the original only.

Delta blues at last:D
Thank you Justin you're better than Santaclaus!

Amateurs borrow, Professionals Steal.
Smokestack was composed in 1956.. CCR boldly stole it.

does anyone know the tab for this song?
Good lesson but not sure if all the notes are mentioned.
After the 2-4 slide on g I think he's playing b3 g4-g2 g0 d2 d0 I think and then i'm lost..
kingshearer2 1 year ago
@kingshearer2
Then again d2,
second time round he doesn't play e3 & b3 simultaneously but just b3 without the "blues curl"

@diamondcarnivore Cool I never knew that and I agree, you must be doing something right if Hendrix and Clapton admire you anyway

Sweet riff. Could be played with a Bass Guitarist playing the low E notes, but cooler this way if you can manage.
