yup nunchaku originated (as i believe) from rice flails which comptised of a long stick and a short stick attached by either chain or other binding, the nunchaku was possibly an evolution of that or the three section staff

bone282:I've been told(by multiple sources,including 2 of my martial arts instructors) that the nunchakus originated as a tool 4 leading horses when walking beside them.The rope is placed in their mouth(like reins when ur riding the horse),& the sticks are held by the person,to guide the horse. I thought I'd write this cuz ur comment has a negative one beside it (cuz someone read it & deemed it incorrect). Ninja MAY have used nunchucks, and they may not have. There's no real proof either way. They mostly used weapons based on average farming implements because they weren't rich enough to actually pay to have weapons forged for them. That's why things like sai look like a pitchfork, the shogee was a reaping tool, etc.

actually thats not true, nunchucks were originated from gardening tools to actual weapons back when it became illegal for certain people to carry any weapons at all.

They were used as rice flails, to separate the rice from the grains. It's unlikely ninja used them, though. They did use the kama and the digging dagger, or kunai. And just for the record, the dead straight ninja-to sword is not the sword used by the ninja. They used a shorter than average katana, longer than a wakizashi though.
