  • @locthebard Yes. Agree.

  • @relaxmax2000 The only concievable reason would be the abrupt end. Fantastic. Cheers

  • Did you notice tenor saxophone giant Ben Webster in the audience, lighting a cigarette at 5:11?

  • How to Create Art Out of Cheese 101

Dex was a master at taking an innocuous pop tune and making it something else ENTIRELY.

  • Dexter fantastic.

  • Thank you for posting his gem. Dexter Gordon = the man

  • Any body know the personell on this exquisite piece of film? Is that Kenny Drew on piano? At 5:10 there's a brief glimpse of a burned out old soul sitting at his table reaching for a cigarette: isn't that Ben Webster? In his day, he played in that same club many times and made great recordings there. The Danes knew their jazz and named a street in Copenhagen, Ben Webter Avenue.

  • Ja! Is Ben Webster! great

  • @aklamotte Niels Henning on bass. NHOP = Niels Henning Ørsted Peder, Kenny Drew on drums. Drummer ?? Al "Toot" Heath - or something like that. Yes it is for sure Ben W. in the audience. He lived in Copenhagen at that time. He is burried in Copenhagen "Assistens Kirkegaard" - not far from the grave of Hans Christian Andersen. I may have answered befor in another way - but I am new at this, Sincerely yours Kai.

  • Last night I wen´t to a jamsession the old Jazzhus Montmartre, which has been fully restored and is now a Jazzclub again (after more than 30 years). My head started to wander, and it was amazing to think about all the musical legends that used to perform in this room. Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins, NHØP, Bud Powell, Stuff Smith, Chet Baker, Jan Johansson and Stan Getz (just to name a few). I could almost feel the energy of this great musical past. Great stuff...

  • It doesn't get much more kick ass

  • What a great cat! I remembered him reaching into his pocket and throwing out"Space Dust or glitter" on we the audience. That was funny and he would act like he had received some liquid refreshment earlier or something a bit stronger. All the while playing impeccably. I wondered if it was an act.

  • This was Dex as I knew him.

  • DAM he's good !!!!!! Dexter gordon is LARS ULRICH from metallica's GODFATHER ............ Imagine them jammin ?? WOW

  • piano player's name?

  • @perovaas i agree with you all the way man. anything he played was just inspirational.

  • I love Dexter. Always have, always will.

  • wow, thanks for sharing this with us!

  • That's how I remember Dexter, a little layed back and relaxed and powerful playing on the saxophone. It is good to hear K Drew and Niels Henning from the house trio again

  • It's a russian song "Дорогой длинною" :-)

  • @mihmus More people know it as "Those Were the Days", Mary Hopkin, 1968. But origin its russian, by Konstantin Podrevsky.

  • I've seen this request on almost every Dex vid on youtube

    lol

Hope someone puts it up here...I dont have the ability to...so... :(

  • I was fortunate to see Dexter at the village Vanguard around this time when I was still in highschool I never heard of him at th etime but he was really good.

  • love the sweatdrop at 8:22 :D dex was the man

  • Dex knows how to groove.

  • I wish they'd warn you about truncated videos. I feel jipped. Great horn, great band though.

  • este man es increible!!!!!!!

  • dex is the man

  • Dex was the epitome of hipness! Thanks for posting.

  • I think if you could only show someone unfamiliar with jazz a few clips, this would have to be one of them. Dexter swing so hard, and the group really plays great together.

  • Wow. That´s so f..cking intense. I wish I had been around Montmartre to hear theese great gigs, but I didn´t arrive in Copenhagen before 1980....And on earth for that matter. Now Copenhagen only has the local legends playing their stuff.

  • NHÖP!!

  • that's Ben Webster in the crowd

  • Comment removed

  • Dexter is one classy cat. Wish Americans could appreciate jazz like these hip Europeans.

  • Ben Webster was living there also Dexter and guys having a break from the Vietnam war there was a good scene happing all use to meet in the Drop Inn. I lived there at that time and hung around with them. Lots happening good times thanks guys.

  • at 5:14 on this video, I'm pretty sure that's Ben Webster sitting there - I'm pretty sure he was living there during that period .. what do you think, eh? - I saw Dexter several times in Toronto, back in the late 50's early 60's and I'll never forget that amazing tenor sound that you don't hear much anymore ...

  • yes, i`m pretty sure, too. It`s Ben Webster

  • Dexter has all the past in his experience, also Ben Webster because he plays what he feels because he has nothing to show external to what he feels, also if it's there some lick in his playing.

    Paolo Mannelli

  • youre dumb.. and ugly

  • Hallo! How are you?

  • my mom saw dexter during this run at montmartre!

she had gone on a european vacation with one of her girlfriends and ended up at the club one night. She told us when she got back, that dexter had hit on them all night.Sat at their table and bought a couple of rounds of drinks. She only knew about Dexter Gordon because my dad was a big fan.He had the dexter gordon/wardell grey recordings that he purchased in college. He would listen to them constantly(along with bird/diz on red vinyl!)

    dad was hip!

  • man dex is cool. there is some pretty good stuf on youtube, some real crap as well but has to be one of the quintessential jazz clips on the tube, rreally makes me feel as though is was there you can almost smell dex in theis vid. fantastic!!!!!!

  • this clip is magic!

  • I had a Best of Blue note double-LP with Dexter Gordon and other musicians featured. I wish I owned more of his recordings.

  • ...wow. This is amazing. What I would give to have been there! That's like Utopia for we jazz musicians.

  • DAm what a great little spot to be in! Must have been so good to be there listening to the legend.... reminds me of the Vanguard

  • Dig those groovy Danish cats and kittens in the audience.

  • Anyone know who the rhythm section is on this?

  • It's obviusly Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and I think the pianist is Kenny Drew. I don't know who is the drummer.

  • Piano: Kenny Drew

    Bass: Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen

    Drums: Mikaya Nshoko

  • Thanks for the info. I didn't know who was Mikaya Nshoko, but he's an amazing drummer.

    Thanks again!

  • Anyone know if that is the name of the chart?(those were the days) I checked all my fake/real books can't find it!

  • Been listening to Dexter for years, only really started digging youtube recently, and man this video rocks! quality, shame not whole tune.

  • coltrane got his shit from dex niggah

  • dex was the best..

  • the old monmartre in copenhagen...jazz capital no 1

  • Man I really enjoyed this. Thank you so much for posting.

  • We thought they'd never end!!

  • "Those were the days my friend"...damn good session

  • Thank¨s for this great grabation, PabloVestory, i think the name of the song is "those were the days".

Al inicio de la melodia, lo menciona Dexter, es un exito rockero de los 70s. de Mary Hopkings, aqui mismo la encuentras

  • Please, how is tittled this song in english? in spanish it says: "Qué tiempo tan feliz..." "what a happy time then.." or so. I love too the absolute priceless warm up.

  • Wow.. thanks for postting

  • LTD'S IN DA HOUSE, LOL! Man, if I ever finally do decide to take up the tenor sax at some point in my life (I'm 27 as of now), believe me HE'LL BE THE REASON FOR IT!!! I mean let's face it, nobody really plays like that anymore. Takes quite a bit of living to get a sound like that...

    >;-)

  • what tip opening was he using at this point ?. Great concert thanks for posting

  • What was the booing all about then ? - It spoilt the mood of the track.

  • Actually, they are saying "oooooohh". As in "yeah, the man himself here!!".

  • Ah........ It sounded to me like some drunk acting up.

  • I'm quite sure it is, given it's a Jazz club in Copenhagen, Denmark. Acting up in a good way, however. Dexter lived in Copenhagen for some time and was deeply embraced there.

  • what's the name of this tune?

  • "Those are the days, my friend"

    Gene Raskin

A pop tune of the mid 70s, I believe, performed by M.Hopkins

  • Couldn't be from the MID-70's because this film was recorded in 1971.

  • You are right, OLugs. Mary Hopkin recorded the tune "Those were the days" already in 1968 and it became a big success - sorry for my first supposition. A very trivial song, of course: but listen what a giant like the great Dexter plays! Greetings!

  • I can´t recognise the pianist and nor the bass or drums.

    Who are they?

  • The pianist is Kenny Drew, the bassist is Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and I believe the drummer is Makaya Ntshoko?

Also, Ben Webster is in the audience! :o)

  • Thanks!

  • Piano: Kenny Drew

    Bass: Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen

    Drums: Mikaya Nshoko

  • clearly the drumer isnt asian ,that is a black drummer, then who is he?

  • He is South African and his name is listed just above.

  • what an abrupt ending...man, do you have some more?

  • great!
