  • Looks like a hot air engine to me...

  • I s this a hit and miss engine?

  • @Squarerig Well I supose it is in a way... just something that was made to entertain the crowd or a conversation piece.

  • WOW thats an old "run when it wants to" engine. Lazy people used them during the great depression.

  • Sure its not a Stirling engine, popping a rotation every time the thing warms up enough in the sun?

  • Bizarre! but cool.

  • I belive this is a non compression engine. Intake valve closes half way through the intake stroke, then the plug fires.

  • I love to see all the ingeneuity that goes into engines. I picked up a scrap end-plate from a Saab gear box, which incorporates a very clever pump in which two gears of different diameters mesh, forcing gear oil down a passage-way. The genius is in its simplicity.

Incidentally, I like the way this oil engine seems to 'limp' along.

  • the transfer case in my jimmy uses that same pump

  • I wonder who thought up the idea?

  • What if this is a atmospheric internal combustion engine? It sucks in combustable mixture, then stops. Some hidden electronic or something fires a spark plug, it make some revs, suick some mix and stops again.

  • Yes, it is internal combustion. If you notice the piston leaks out most of the compression. As it gets to the bottom it trips the igniter. Runs bad and stops on top of compression, leaks down and does it again. It does this about every 1 to 1 1/2 minute. Fun to watch!!

  • Mystery is now solved :-) Interesting style of operation.

  • just a beam engine...

  • Yes it is a beam engine but if you look close it is homemade. The flywheel looks to be the treadle from a sewing machine. How does he make it run so bad every so many seconds??

  • Do you have any plans for thisunit?

Can you send me some up close pics of this unit?

    Thanks

    Rod

  • Sorry, this engine was on display at Portland Indiana engine show. It isn't mine. Just thought it was unique and had to share.

  • How does the engine work?

  • Boy I wish I knew?? Fun to watch!!

  • It does not work :)

  • Your not the only one trust me.

  • I had a car that ran like that...LOL.

  • @aadailey yeah this was invented just right after The Flintstones.
