I kind was kind of on Grandmother's side about the NIghtsong and Hawk Man business. She completely abandoned her and never even came back to find her or anything! I probably would have done the same thing as Grandmother... admittedly. If Nightsong died on me, though, I would've been heartbroken.
The book was really sad but the author has a very creative writing style. I found it harder to write a report on it than read it because of its constant changing stories!
My family finished a cross country road trip listening to the unabridged audio book of The Underneath. My children are voracious readers and we frequently listen to audio books and we all agree that this book was exhausting and difficult to follow the multiple, jumping story lines. The redundant nature of the writing caused us to bet how many times she would use "trees", "missing" or "price" in a paragraph. It's sad when kids joke about who and how the next main character dies. Too much prose!
Whoever created bad reviews of this book obviously doesn't appreciate any poetry. Honestly, I'm tired of books being written in the EXACT same style over and over again. It get's pretty boring and shows no originality or style. Thank God someone had the nerve to publish a book with their very own style of writing, and not the 'correct' kind or the kind everyone wants to read.
@TheMachinimaFarm Then put that on his pop.Being abused doesn't allow u to treat other kinds like shit.Lots of kids were tortured worse than that,by > than 1 person. They could be victims of crazy sick assholes for a long time.He wasn't the unluckiest creature in the world,so what he had done deserves death.Glad the croc ate him alive. If he killed the animals only,I would feel sorry. But he lengthened the tornments for those poor little things as much as he enjoyed it so screw his lame excuses
@onlyone688 you have a good point, but everybody reacts to abuse in their own ways. He tortured those animals as sport, because he didn't know how to vent his anger properly.
I think this book reached some people but not others due to personal preference in style and themes, which is why it does not get good reviews all round. But it really reached me. The Underneath had a whole new charm of its own. Until today, more than a year after I read this, I still cry so much for their family when I think about the story. Gotta re-read it soon. And I kinda agree the mood of the trailer doesn't really suit the book.
The music on this doesn't really fit the book. Sounds too folksy and the book is more mythic and magical. The music makes the book sound frivolous, which is absolutely isn't. The book is amazing. Don't miss it. But I probably wouldn't use this book trailer to help promote it. : /

This is one of my most favorite children's chapter books. It's beautiful and brilliant. This trailer doesn't do it justice.
