  • Fucking ruined the piece

  • WVU's band always kicks ass. Let's Goooooo Mountaineers!!!

  • Made me cry! Let's go Mountaineers!!

  • Lets Goooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember being in a band for a smaller crowd. always liked them better cause they were quiet lol. anyway love the song and the performance here

  • I love it!!!

  • haha! i love how the crowd's cheering always seems to push bands into putting more energy into their music, which the crowd starts picking up and cheers even louder!

  • To those here that can’t hear the music. We have heard this piece many times. This isn’t about the music but posturing and making a statement as to who we are to the other team and fans. We are all proud West Virginia Mountaineers. Our state doesn’t have any major professional sports team. WVU represents not just the university but all West Virginians. We are saying we are strong, we are here and are going to beat your ass!

  • To the band members the crowd noise is just appreciation for great entertainment. You all should be very proud of this band,

  • I am an alum from WVU from 97 and whenever I feel a bit down about being out of work or that my degree was something I should have put off instead of going into some union in my hometown, I watch this and feel so much pride and hope that I get watery eyed.

This makes me as proud to be a Mountaineer as Robert Walkers touchdown run in 1993 against Miami. And if I were there I'd have lost my voice from this.

  • complaining about the crowd noise? its amazing!!

  • Pause at 1:43 lol they make a donut

  • ( . Y . )

  • wow nice GE

  • As a member of the Pride I have to say that the crowd is what makes it so fun. When the crowd starts going crazy as you condense into the simple gift circles the feeling you get is indescribable. LOVE the crowd noise

  • When my son was in "The Pride" the noise made it special

  • colorguard-filled doughnut at 1:39 yummmm lol

  • Thank you for posting this. I hate how people (in general) don't respond during marching band performances anymore. That crowd going "ape $#^%&^" is exactly what I loved about marching. If they didn't do that during our show we knew we didn't do well. How cool it must have been to be on that field!

  • This was the greatest game I have ever attended. It was truly amazing especially since I lived in Atl at the time (sandy springs area) and all of my friends around there were of course UGa fans. I'll never forget how much trash they all talked about how they were going to kick our asses and all we could do was run and how the SEC was like the NFL and the Big East was peewee and whatnot. Well all we did was run for nearly 400 yards and 4 tds against that unpenetrable defense. Great great times!!

  • I absolutely LOVE Simple Gifts! It is my favorite part of the pre-game show at the WVU games. And you have to have the crowd screaming...that's what makes this SO special! A writer in a sports magazine even named this as one of the top pre-game events and said it gave him cold chills. I've seen it a hundred times and it still rocks me!

  • Crowd reminds me of vuvuzelas

  • Thanks to Arron Copland, West Virginia has such inspiring music as Appalachian Spring.

  • Great Troopers sunburst.

  • sloppy but nice GE

  • Nice Chorale and Shaker dance ending!

  • WOW!!!!! some day I hope to go to a WV home game.

  • OH THE CROWD NOISE!!!!!

Hahaha just kidding. Great performance. I am in the Pride now, but this is before my time.

  • from now on all comments that do nothing but complain about the crowd noise will be deleted.

  • @WVUsax27 Wow, that crowd was noisy!

  • @WVUsax27 why would you complain about the crowd if your on the field that's the best part which makes band so epic in college

  • My son played with the awesome band. ceruleanhope is correct. The band responds to the crowd's reaction.

  • The rumble of the crowd ruins the epicness that is Simple Gifts.

  • truethatt

i plan to be in the band.

  • we play this as our marching show :D

    GO HEIGHTS!

  • This was my very last performance as a WVU Mountaineer trombone player. I have to say after 4 years and 200+ performances with WVU, this was by far the most amazing experience of my WVUMB career. LET'S GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!! Can't beat the memories!

  • lets go eers!!!!

  • As far as marching is concerned, cheering for an impact during a performance is an awesome feeling. I know in concert it's proper to wait till the end, but hearing the crowd during the middle of a marching band or drum corps show is an adrenaline rush and makes you want to perform better. I would have been playing my heart out if I was at this performance.

  • can't hear a dang note of the song, but man, great form!

  • This vid still gives me the chills. That game was one of the better moments of my life.

  • lol cool at one point it looks like a spider

  • This is from the 2006 Sugar Bowl when it was played at "home" in Atlanta after Hurricane Trina hit is New Orleans. I was there and trust me, the video did not do it justice. The Pride of West Virginia has approximately 375-400 members. Not many college bands have that many!

    Let's Go Mountaineers!

  • Dang you can barly hear them play.

  • while many consider it disrespectful...I used to march (sousaphone) and this would just excite the hell out of me if the crowd cheered us on like that!!

  • wow, those flags are speedy for getting to the middle like that

  • As far as yelling for a marching band goes, as a member of a college marching band, I have to say that there is no greater thrill on the field than having your playing drowned out by a screaming crowd

  • The drill design is amazing. Genus form and flow from each. As a college band director, it's nice to see a band out so much pride into what they do. Congrats.

  • Nice a litte sloppy gut I like the GE

  • The Cadets playing Simple Gifts for 2008 show...now that's amazing...

  • As a WVU grad, we yell for the band because they are the best band in the country and they like the fact that we yell (I worked with four people from the band in college). It gets everyone fired up for the game and the band members are just as nuts about WVU sports as we are, they seem to want us to yell and get rowdy. From what my friends in the band tell me it is awesome when we yell because it mean we really like the arrangement. By the way this is the begining of the game, not half-time.

  • Beyond amazing...

  • wow, I should have been reading some of these comments

Guys, I can promise you none of us minded the yelling. That's half the fun, and generally speaking the band encourages it....it's not like they asked everyone to shut up before hand because we were filming. It wasn't disrespectful

  • The yelling is respect for the band.

  • would be better without all the damn people yelling and not giving the band any respect.. lol

  • I can't even hear the band!

  • these band freaks from years past need to shut up about the crowd...that's half why i watch this.....so i'll continue to enjoy this if you guys let us if not play for maryland.

  • This makes me very homesick. I even miss OLD Mountaineer stadium where I use to sell hotdogs as a kid.(Actually I used to sit on the hotdog box and watch the game-people kept bugging me for hotdogs-very bothersome)

  • It is 19 years since I last did this and it I still get chills watching this!!!

  • yea they need to shut the hell up

  • good to see that somebody on this site is respectable are you in a marching band yourself i am!

  • yea i march trumpet in my high school band i hope to march in WVU's band one day my father did

  • cool i play trombone in a high school band!

  • if it werent for us screaminf for you you would have no job...so don't ever ever speak as a member of the band again

  • You are talking on a WHOLE different band environment, kid. This is college marching band. There is no greater thrill than having a crowd go nuts for you in the middle of a performance. During high school competitions, maintaining crowd silence with the occasional cheer is how things are done, but not in college. College bands have traditions that tend to get the crowd on their feet right in the middle of a performance.

  • a marching band is a marching band people still need to respect every part of it the music and the marching the audience is just composed of irrespectable baboons and it doesn't matter if it is high school or college peole need to learn to RESPECT THE BANDS!

  • I'm gonna say it again. You don't get it. College marching bands are a huge part of gameday and the members LOVE the crowd getting excited at moments like this. At a high school band competition and at a drum corps competition, silence during the performance is common courtesy. I know, I'm a huge corps fan that HATES it when people talk during performances, but I am also the member of a major universities marching band and love nothing better than the crowd going nuts for us at halftime.

  • Do it. Call me a liar. Call me a liar up and down all you want. You'll just make an ass of yourself. Ask any college band member out there. We live for moments like the one featured in this video. If anything, the moment is made by the crowd response in situations like that. You talk about respect to the bands. There is no greater respect than a college band recieving this kind of love from their fans. You keep talking, because you OBVIOUSLY know what it's like being in a college band.

  • Damn, I would just love to be on the field hearing the crowd go nuts like that for me. Wow. Not many bands get reactions like that outta their crowds. Just astonishing.

  • the only idiot is you i'm in a marching band myself it's very disrespectful to yell when a band is playing after all that work. i'm getting sick of cocky know it all wannabe verliers like you so i won't waste my time w/ filth like you. have a guten tag

  • yea doommmmmmmm it is disrespectful

  • i agree with you it would be better if people dont TALK during the performance,,,,,, ruins it

  • well people still need to respect the bands by being quiet so they can play their song

  • Its a college football game not a sissy tea party.

  • What the hell is the point of that??

The Band is there to participate with the crowd, to get them pumped up for the game and to make the game even more enjoyable. The crowd being quiet would utterly and completely destroy that. To anyone in the crowd, cheer as loudly as you can for your band!

And I, too, am in a college marching band. I would hate it if the crowd were dead silent. That would tell me clearly that we're failing at our purpose.

  • meh.

  • I agree with you completely! I used to be apart of my university marching band and there is no greater thrill then to have the crowd go crazy! I have played in stadiums where its quiet and the thrill is not there and its very bland. There is nothing better than a crowd that reacts to you! We have a lot of traditions here as well that the students would absolutely go crazy for! That's what we're here for, to help cheer our team on! Hail To The Victors!

  • I have to agree with Dynamite; Doom just doesn't get it. I was in the Golden Band from Tigerland at LSU, and crowd reaction is one of the biggest elements of what we do. Don't believe me? Watch any video of an LSU pregame performance. When we take the field in Death Valley, you can't hear yourself play. It would not be nearly the experience that it is without that. The roar of approval that greats us as we play the into to pregame is unparalleled, and the reaction of the fans is a huge piece!

  • @DynamiteMcGhee Actually (yes, i'm responding to a year old comment, lol), you will find the occasional high school band try to get the crowd pumped. After I got a new director back in high school, every year we would do songs that would get the audience involved. Such as "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" where we encouraged the audience to clap and sing along, "Home on the range" where I (the drum major) turned around and conducted the crowd to sing with the duet (tuba and baritone playing drunk, lol).

  • Just an awesome experience - I marched in the 90's and it's an experience I'll never forget. If you get a chance to be a part of The Pride - do it - it's something that you'll have with you for the rest of your life.

  • kickass but the crowd needs to shut up

  • in 2 years I'll be doing that!!! I can't freakin' Wait!

  • It gives me goosebumps man....

  • Lets Go Mountaineers.

  • Ahh... those were the days. Just a bit of background. THAT particular part of pre-game has been in the show for about 30 some odd years.... NEVER has changed. And you see how 'excited' people get over the "circle song". The director at one point did take this part out of pre-game to update the show, however, due to repeated letters (including actual death threats) he put it back in and has never changed it.

  • That game was sooo amazing. I couldn't even hear myself play and I remember after pregame one of senior tuba players having blood on his uniform because his lip busted from playing so much. Great times!

  • I have to say it's the LOUDEST FREAKIN' CROWD I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE--and I've been around drum corps and band for a good part of about 30 years....goooooood LORD!!!

  • the crowd seriously needs to stfu

  • har har

  • no the crowd really does have to shut up. its respect. if this was dci and any1 was yelling like that theyed get throw down the bleachers by the other fans

  • how could you get mad at them for gettin pumped for one of the biggest games in mountaineer history

  • true. but u cant hear crap lol

  • I marched this show yesterday, at Mountaineer Field and you cant beat the feeling of the crowd going nuts becuase your playing and marching. Its freaking sweet.

  • I was just kidding--acting as if it was a concert hall situation. I would have cheered too.

  • the chills... EVERYTIME

  • I attended WVU when no girls were permitted in the band. It broke my heart! Then in 1994 by a fluke I met the band director in an elevator. Long story short, he invited me to participate in the Alumni Band at homecoming that year. I played in the band and could hardly blow my dad's tenor sax (this was in his honor)...the emotion was tremendous as 65,000 fans applauded us! A fond memory I'll never forget. Thanks so much for this video.

  • I think the crowd should have sat there quietly and politely till the music was over and THEN applauded.

  • Scew you bands depend on the crowd it motivates them lol sit down quietly pshhh

  • scew?

  • You have to think of the situation..normally we don't cheer this loud..but we were huge underdogs against georgia and just had probably the biggest first half we have seen by our team...that probably fueled it

  • The only thing is... we did this before the game started... so, it was the fans cheering getting ready for the game + the fact that it was in a dome and it made it about 50 times louder than normal.

  • finally there is a band as legendary as the football team that comes around once in a life time

  • Thank you

    I miss home today

  • We could hear the wonderful music if the freakin' crowd would SHUT UP!! =D lolz.

  • For all of you people who have trouble listening to this incredible music - due to the amazing crowd noise - play the "Simple Gifts Practice" video that WVUsax27 graciously posted - shown at right. To watch the entire Sugar Bowl pregame show, play "Boogie Cadence", "Simple Gifts - Game" and "Country Roads" back-to-back-to-back. I was lucky enough to be in the crowd at the Sugar Bowl, what a great experience (and I am a Georgia alum who grew up in WV). Thanks for posting these WVUsax27!

  • WVU marching band is no doubt the best

  • I wasn't in the band, I graduated in 1991, and I still get chills as well.

  • Aww memories.... the circles still give me chills.

  • SOme parts of this song is played low, but when the band has to too, you can hear em. GO PRIDE!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow, that was amazing.

  • damn i got goosebumps, and yeah, every mountaineer fan loves the band as much as the team, and that crowd is loud as hell especially at mountaineer field, LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS

  • wow, a crowd that loves the MB.

  • West Virginia fans have just as much pride in the WEST VIRGINIA BAND as we do in the football team!!

  • BIG BIG PRIDE FAN HERE from South Charleston!! You guys are THE BEST!! One of the best things about going to Morgantown is THE PRIDE OF WEST VIRGINIA!! You guys get everybody, including the team, ready for the afternoon with the CLASSIC & AWESOME Pre-Game!! "Simple Gifts" has ALWAYS been my fave!!

    "LET'S GO-O-O-O MOUNTAINEERS!!"

  • Oh man, the whole trip was wild. The trombones got to sit up front, so we got front row seats at the Sugar Bowl!

  • I'm a 1984 Alumnus, 4 year baritone horn player in the Pride. That was a great rendition-- bravo and Go Mountaineers!

  • what i meant was the band show. i can barely hear it because the crowd goes wild.

  • oh okay. Yeah we couldn't hear anything on the field either. Domes make the sound jump everywhere

  • i cant hear a thing...

  • get your ears checked.
