    at the end he invites her on a date, and says that he has a pencil she could borrow to write it down to remind herself or suggests that she make a note in her phone, but in the end she says no to the pencil and the suggestion of making a note in her phone, because she doesn't need a reminder

    ...so yes, he does

  • Homosexual activists understand the power of words.

    Please visit my channel to watch a one-minute video clip in which popular atheist author Richard Dawkins admits that homosexual activists "hijacked the word 'gay'".

    The word "homosexual" is more appropriate and accurate because it, unlike the word "gay", actually describes the behavior/attraction/relationship being discussed.

    The word "gay" helps homosexual activists push their agenda.

  • So does he get the girl or not? I'm sooo confused :/

    Q<= <3 O}-<

  • @marjune22 :

    The ending is deliberately vague. You can have it end however you'd like. That is the great thing about this poem.

    In my mind, she didn't need the pencil because she would remember the details and meet him. For others, it was the concept of rejection. Both valid interpretations but I guess I'm a "glass half full" kind of guy. :-)

  • I think the overall point of it at the end was to demonstrate really, how un-emotive emoticons are. You cannot illustrate that feeling of rejection through an emoticon. He told the whole story using the text pictures but when it came down to that last line, there is no emoticon in the world that can really express that horrible pit feeling in your stomach of rejection really. That is my take on it anyways.

  • I've been thinking what the ending line means. I guess i made two possibilities 1. The girl doesn't have to write down the details of their meeting because she remembers it or 2. She rejected him.

    I really wanted to know the meaning of this story please help. Thnx : ) Very Creative indeed!

  • hahaha, this poem is both informative, entertaining, and good wholesome poetry.

  • @Animecat5 OMG, you did it too!

  • Wow, how did you get that backwards "b"?

  • @sjeses it's a d.....

  • If I could have seen this coming 50 years ago, I would have blown up DARPA.

  • OH! i thought the "...i don't need 2 write it down.'" was a thing he just added b/c he doesn't have to write it down...he can type it :P

    but the girl saying that makes much more sense. since there aren't quotation marks at the front of that line...

    i like that ending better :)

    and i guess since everyone else has, i'll put my 2 cents in. i loved it; a little skeptical b/c i never thought the annoying emoticon language could be endearing, but cute nonetheless

  • He says oh my god so wierdly

  • I think the 4 her at the end means that afterwards he ended up getting the girl because he kept trying. ie the speaker got her in the end

  • @boorens18 like it was a dedication of some sort?

  • nice

  • beautiful, more Rives!

  • @chatled08  d

  • I love Rives.

    :)

  • By the way what does the last one mean?

    4 Q<=

    (that she has memorized the number already? 1 digit? )

  • I believe that's meant to be a tribute, as in "For her". Whether or not there's actually a 'her' is debatable, Rives likes to make his fictions look like realities, and that one adds one more "aww" at the end of the performance, if you catch it.

  • thanks

  • he uses some animation instead of type-able characters from keyboard...

  • Huh?

    No,

    Which ones?

  • <:3~~

  • [?B^U} ... 'Eeyyy!

  • I thought it was interesting as a commentary on how the medium defines the story rather than mediums adapting to our notions of stories. It's kind of fun knowing that my imagination is probably manufactured.

  • Q<= O}-< having xxx :D

  • (+l_l:)

  • ಠ_ಠ

    I'm intrigued....

  • umm...ok.

    what fun is just making up your own syble smile faces i guess.....

    but this is boring..

  • im not quite sure i get what he's trying to say

  • "I don't need to write it down"....I don't get it. What does that even mean?

  • She knows the number. She's that taken with him that she just committed the number to memory.

  • Thank you for explaining; not being a native english speaker I wasn't sure myself, although I had made a fair guess about the happy ending.

    Anyway if one wasn't that sure about it being a happy ending story, it could also be she's just acting purposefully arrogant and cold-hearted when rejecting the guy (yeah I prefer dramas lol jk)

  • it means love...

  • Rives - I can't get enough! Left me casually grinning :)

  • This really makes no sense, even with him narrating it, there's no story there. Well, there IS a story, but the story is kinda absurd, maybe surreal at some points, and it's incredibly hard to make out that story through those symbols. His (as far as that is possible) literal narrative does not connect the symbols in a meaningfull way, there's no semantics that illuminate the story that's being superimposed on, told by and illustrated by the symbols used. 2 stars for trying.

  • of course theres a complete story being developed there.. geez some of you are just empty headed not to see what going on

  • Don't act all pretentious, the symbols are ambiguous, there's thousands of ways to interpret them.

  • i love this.

    he's a genius.

    && he has this swagg about him.

    my new favorite... :]

  • what the?... i'm a full time msn'er but that i can't.

  • Q<= <3 O}-<

  • What's the emoticon for lame?

  • @BetaScience74656

    That would be: " u "

  • very inspiring, 5 stars.

  • I think a bunch of fifth-graders might find this presentation entertaining.

    "Fun with emoticons" was last 'fun' in the mid 90's, when the Internet was getting off the ground.

  • I guess you don't get how this video plays on human emotions. How simply things can be seen as wonderful and good for some people while for other is will seem sad.

  • Well, I think with this presentation the intelligence quotient of the program just dropped five notches.

  • "?" What do you meme ?

  • Some of you people here think that you're being sarcastic by saying this is inspiring, but you're missing the point. It's TED. It's about ideas not about inspiring your lazy asses. This fella just illustrated the elaborate vocabulary of the emoticon language; he managed to present to us the state of our society in a creative manner all in 3 mins. Bravo.

  • @jesstern Even though the story doesn't stand up by itself because of some incorrect depictions & he explained so much that wasn't shown in text (but could have been), so even if we understood the depictions, we wouldn't get the story?

    Maybe I'm just not getting the point, but as interesting as this video could have been, even when letting my imagination go wild, I don't see any point of worth in this video. Do note I just randomly came accross this video and thus know of no context for this.

  • @jesstern Actually TED = Technology Entertainment & Design

    This was the Entertainment aspect of TED, a genius poet asked to perform for a room full of intellectuals. But yes TED is about bringing together great minds in all 3 fields to share their ideas.

  • he's not TED enough.

  • If they let him on, i should be on. So should all of you.

  • What would you do with those minutes? Make popcorn?

  • mmmmmmm popcorn

  • wtf is this?

  • just inspiring as many more ted talks :)

  • Well I certainly find that very inspiring.

  • %--&

    (It means "wtf?")

  • @Thymonico nope

  • Look at me, I'm witty cause this spoken word is about emoticons and I can draw a penis LAWL!

    8==> O:

    (The open mouth makes it even wittier) No matter how many times someone posts it (4 times so far) it never gets old...

    Here's an idea though, learn how to use/appreciate words with Rives' kind of lyrical dexterity or GTFO spoken word video's...

  • lol it's not really that sad guys... I thought it was funny. stop being inapropriate.

  • this is a freakin sad story!!!
