The ending is deliberately vague. You can have it end however you'd like. That is the great thing about this poem.

In my mind, she didn't need the pencil because she would remember the details and meet him. For others, it was the concept of rejection. Both valid interpretations but I guess I'm a "glass half full" kind of guy. :-)

I think the overall point of it at the end was to demonstrate really, how un-emotive emoticons are. You cannot illustrate that feeling of rejection through an emoticon. He told the whole story using the text pictures but when it came down to that last line, there is no emoticon in the world that can really express that horrible pit feeling in your stomach of rejection really. That is my take on it anyways.

I believe that's meant to be a tribute, as in "For her". Whether or not there's actually a 'her' is debatable, Rives likes to make his fictions look like realities, and that one adds one more "aww" at the end of the performance, if you catch it.

This really makes no sense, even with him narrating it, there's no story there. Well, there IS a story, but the story is kinda absurd, maybe surreal at some points, and it's incredibly hard to make out that story through those symbols. His (as far as that is possible) literal narrative does not connect the symbols in a meaningfull way, there's no semantics that illuminate the story that's being superimposed on, told by and illustrated by the symbols used. 2 stars for trying.
