  • I'm one of those who like PG and PC in genesis. I can't trash or like one over the other. My take is genesis changed when PG left and that era wasn't coming back PC took the stage and their careers skyrocketed. PG solo career was no slouch either, they were all so good in that band.

  • Phil has quite a unique appeal to music... but let's get in agreement with something here. Progressive rock was a dying genre; and Phil didn't bother to attend the funeral.

He was too busy sitting in death row.

Personally, I think Phil Collins has talent, but he sold out on Genesis, and ruined Gabriel's creation.

I mean, you don't see him changing his appearance to insanity for the music; only for the money.

  • @TheOneEyedHound Yes, but the mind behind the solding of Genesis was NOT Phil, but Tony Banks!! Tony was the real man who sold the Genesis.

  • @eurojammer47 Aaah, I can argue it.

The band fell after Hackett left.

Really, as five? The band was fantastic. Phil's drumming work that he must've sold his soul to the devil for, Steve's amazing tapping, Tony... well, Tony, I can go on and on about his creativity (and so could you), Mike's bass, especially in Back In NYC, was mind-blowing. And, Peter, the face of Genesis itself.

Seperate, they had a lot of good stuff, too. Star of Sirius, Games w/out Frontiers, In The Air Tonight. (cont)

  • @eurojammer47 Those were all FANTASTIC songs. Well, including a lot more, but I won't go on with Mike and the Mechanics. ♥ I can ramble all day.

Which is what I'm doing now, so allow me to wrap this up.

My philosophy is that they were all, indeed, fabulous artists as one. But, when the pieces fell, so did the talent.

And now that I reread your comment, I saw that you said that Tony /SOLD/ Genesis. I thought we were talking about Tony's talent.

But it was fun to ramble all that way.

"Phil doesn't have to wear fox heads & dresses to draw attention."

Look at 4:28. No comment. (you're welcome)

  • Man, this song just doesn't feel the same without Gabriel. Collins shouldn't touch any old Genesis in concert, he doesn't do it justice.

I saw him preform on the Turn It On Again tour a few years back and The Carpet Crawlers was butchered. He was off-key and showy, it was just so difficult to watch.

Most disappointing show I've ever been too and it's such a shame.

Phil doesn't seem to care much about the music anymore.

  • @JBJabbles2 Oh do me a favour. Phil owned it.

  • my god... what's with phil? i don't want to call him an idiot but this is REALLY hard to watch... i'm very disappointed. good thing peter left.

  • I always felt that Phil sang Peter's song better....Phil just had a better voice to my ears. But no denying Peter's one of a kind talent as a songwriter and brilliant showman.

  • Can someone tell me what the standard "I Know What I Like" medley would be? Obviously it's IKWIL itself, then a snippet of Stagnation - but what are the other frequently-used songs in the IKWIL medley?

  • @SPeacock They used tons of different songs, including Visions of Angels, Dancing With the Moonlit Knight, Blood On the Rooftops, and even songs by other artists, like The Animals' Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. You just kinda have to look around to find what they put in the medley, there's no exact list. :)

  • @GettingEmOutByFriday I see. :) Looks like the only constant piece in the medley is the ending to Stagnation.

  • @SPeacock On the TWWW album there was "That's All", the chorus of "Illegal Alien", a little bit of "Your Own Special Way" and "Follow You Follow Me".

  • Cracking stuff. 1976? Looks like it with Mr Bruford on the drums (nice to see him playing with a decent band at last... OOH! Naughty boy! Did I just say that??).

  • Bruford and phil both are two of the best living drummers easily. Sans bruford, I have no problem AT ALL with Chester Thompson, another of the worlds best drummers

  • may I know where is this from?

  • Love when Phil goes on the drums at the end. Collins and Bruford drumming together...what could be better?(yes that rhymed)

  • Why is Phil the most awesome person in the world?

  • @pfloydman44 4:29...nuff said.

  • of course it was bad when gabriel left genesis.

But its not fair to talk bad about phil.

It was just luke that he could sing and genesis could going on.

Just two pha ses of genesis: From 1969-1974 with gabriel and from than with phil as singer. In the end in was the best what could do.

It was not an easy time for the band.

  • @btom22259 What about Ray Wilson (from the Calling All Stations album)? Wouldn't that make it three phases?

  • I prefer personnally 3 sides live, than this performance ! Sorry !

  • Peter was the better showman yes but Phil had the best pipes. Phil is King.

  • klwewf, 1 year ago:

"Phil doesn't have to wear fox heads & dresses to draw attention."

    Exactly.

  • @6500633 Oh he does, and more ! I have seen both perform with Genesis. Trust me, Peter Gabriel was a class apart. A true theatrical performer who held the audience spellbound. Collins had more of a "sing-along-a-Genesis" cheeky chappy, mate down the pub approach. Chalk and cheese.

  • Comment removed

  • I can't actually believe what I'm reading in some of these comments. The fact that one of the greatest bands EVER kept giving to their audiences, and can still mix it with the best, is just not enough for some twits.

Get over youselves comparison-addicts, bless the fact that you got to witness something wonderfully magic in your dreary lives, and take that to your graves, because there aint much else going on. Me, I'm just a drummer, you can tell me by the way I walk!

  • I has been transmitted in time...

  • I prefer Peter.

  • One of the very few times - if EVER! - that Tony Banks is captured on film breaking into a smile @ 4:15.

  • 3 Sides Live...Grab it..Its awesome but not Peter

  • There's always been Ethel ;O))

  • they were like apples and oranges when comparing Genesis with and without peter gabriel

  • i hate seeing long clips of stage lighting being set up and winches being span when i could be watching my heros on stage belting out a classic

  • They both good singer and song writer Phil made more hits but Peter made better music

  • The Gabriel Vs. Collins debate should be more controversial than Kirk Vs. Picard.

  • PHIL ERA MUITOMELHOR QUE O FANFARRÃO DO PETER.COMPRETO EM TUDO

  • i saw peter's version and this one with phil. love them both.:) two excellent singers indeed. love GENESIS no matter who the frontman is.

  • Gran pezzo, gran attuazzione,Collins mi ricorda un pò a Ian Anderson, che è tuttodire!!! I Genesis sono un gruppo Basilare nella storia del Rock.Oss

  • I love this and the other live versions of this song. Post Gabriel gwenesis really expanded on it and throwing the little tunes in from Visions of Angels and Stagnation have always been a nice touch.

  • 4:52

Look WHY did Phil not say

    "A Flower??" :D

  • @chinwildchicken his voice turn into that of a weed unfortunately.

  • @TheUtubesuxass

    Yes youre right :D

  • mike rutherford is a natural beast on that bass

  • Phil Collins is severely talented. I'm coming to Genesis way too late.

  • @binitials yawn............

  • @binitials Woah there buddy! Lets get our facts strait here... Peter left for a variety of reasons. The band didn't push him out, in fact Tony even tried very hard to convince him to stay. Peter had a young wife and child that needed his attention just as much as Genesis, that coupled with the stress of creating and performing, and the growing resentment of the band that he was getting all of the credit made him decide to move on. The band didn't want him to leave. They just wanted recognition.

  • @binitials I think you need to read about Genesis a bit more pal

  • Watching Phil Collins do a tambourine dance is absolutely priceless, lol!

Show that to fans of 80s Phil.

  • LOL this made my day! the tambourine dance was awsome, and i laughed when he gave everybody a hat to wear! XD lol silly guys :D \m/ GENESIS FOREVER!!!!!!!!

  • Heard this when I was a kid on the radio must be 72/73 time. Loved them ever since. Best group ever.

  • They had definitely perfected the song at this point for live...The other one with Peter is beautiful and artistic but I think this one is a little more polished and epic.

  • @jwild611 exactly

perfect way to describe the two versions

  • wow.. sounds so different with bruford.. I love him!

  • Grandi i Genesis!

  • never play it in a medley

    play the song total

  • @juniorkoops why not?

  • Bill Bruford is among the worlds best and always had his own distinctive (jazzy) style. I remember a music paper years ago saying that Phil Collins mentioned to Bill Bruford that he was looking for another drummer for the band and BB replied, "Well ask me you prick"!

  • It's so awsome that Bruford stays himself and dosn't try to copy collins

  • @MrLosfuegos

I think Bruford style doesn't go with Genesis style of music ever since Steve Hacket left the band , they became poppy

  • @MrLosfuegos of course!! u r right. mr bruford doesn´t need to copy any drummer.

  • Very good performance by Genesis. That tambourine dance is brilliant.

  • I like this vid, it shows how the crew sets up and then the sound is live and the band comes in, really truly amazing video production for as far back as it goes.

  • Lol, Phil's Reaction at 4:52

  • I think the original "I Know What I Like" is a great single for Genesis and the Seconds Out version is even better. You can probably trade for a copy of this through the official Genesis site. I might still have a VHS copy somewhere. It has some of "Cinema Show" and the final, what -- 8 or 10 minutes of "Supper's Ready"? My copy doesn't have "Dance on a Volcano" but does close with "Los Endos". I guess it aired once back in the 70's as Genesis' "turn" on an hour-long TV concert show(?)

  • This is great! What concert is this from and is this something I can get on dvd?

  • Dedicado con mucho cariño a mis amigotes de pueblo hundido en Chile. Thank Genesis

  • Impossible not to love life when there are songs like this in the world.

  • Bill Bruford, amazing

  • superbe video MERCI A TOI....

  • It's one o clock, and it's time for lunch....dum de dum de dum...

  • There's always been Ethel. . .

  • what the heck did the crowd through at him during the 4:50 mark

  • Panties ;D

  • ahhh there's nothing like a 70's Bruford snare drum roll....I love that guy, just imagine where he could of took Gabriel to if they hooked up and bypassed all the Collins/Genesis/fluff/stuff.

  • Quit living in the past, buddy. It never happened. It never will happen.

It sounds like you're another one of those Collins naysayers. Seriously, get over yourself!

  • it's just a comment, faggot, go fuck your mother again. asshole

  • I see I touched a nerve. Also, I didn't realize I was dealing with a toddler with security issues. Your parents should monitor your Interwebs usage a bit closer...

  • french faggot

  • Oh and the tambourine kicking is possibly the most badass thing I have ever seen

  • And, he can still do that shit too - at 58 years old, no doubt.

  • I would have loved to see Genesis in this time period. They weren't the commercial force they would become later. It's a shame because Phil did such a good job on Peter's songs

  • esta poca madre esta cancion lo unico que deseo es que mis bisnietos la gozen tanto como yo (tengo 37 años)

  • this is from a movie released in 1977 called Genesis-in concert from the A trick of the tail tour

  • What kind of hat is Phil wearing at 5:46? It's the bottom one of the stack I think

  • Bruford's tighty whitey overalls with the Boston Bruins "B" on the front - that is just so bad ass...

  • what is this from?

  • Comment removed

  • I don't know what it is but there's a nice clear picture of it on the Genesis Museum web site under magazines. (May 1977 - Musik Joker (Germany) )

  • Lots of people keep ragging on Phil Collins' performance in this video, but not man people understand the difficulty of playing a tambourine with all parts of your body while keeping a consistent rhythm going.

Stop following the drum beat for a bit and listen to the accuracy of the tambourine rhythm. It's fantastic. :-)

  • el dream team del rock progresivo

  • phil collins tambien es un super musico

  • Great to see Bill here

  • this version is bad very bad indeed

  • WRONG!

  • I've never seen someone rock out with a tambourine like that!

  • Beyond the fact that this song is amazing~ I grew up in the wrong era! Men with long hair~ aaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

It would be so lovely if these guys got back together, all of them, for a show, well, for a few shows~

  • This is the first time I've heard this song with Phil Collins singing lead vocals and I have to say that I enjoyed it...Phil has a great voice and while his theatrics don't quite measure up too Peter Gabriel's, it was still great! I really wish people would stop hating on Phil...I think he's very talented and he did NOT break up Genesis. Both PC and PG are geniuses in there own right and there is room enough in this world for 2 great entertainers...lol...

  • @greeneyes4005 in most of the peter track i can always here phil in the back round no matter what so to me the singinger didnt change much

  • @greeneyes4005

so you never heard seconds out, wow.

And no, is not still great, PC singing is actually better than PG's.

  • @greeneyes4005 well put. People need to get over it and move on.

  • I watched this after watching a performance of this song with Peter Gabriel, and I must sat Tony and Mike look like they're having more fun (Mike in particular) in this version than the one with Gabriel.

  • Totally agree. I think with Peter, they were kind of miffed that he is up there in elaborate costumes making it all about his own performance, not really with the band. It seemed too serious and stiff.

I do love PG though, so I am not ragging on him but all the guys in Genesis mentioned that about Peter's costumes at some point, that it just got totally ridiculous after a while.

This performance, they are just having fun.

  • You're 1000% correct! They're having fun. Yet, still being serious / professional musicians.

  • amazing

  • Spot on Renny.

    Genesis eat most bands alive.

    PROG RULES FOREVER!!!

  • This is the only group I've had the opportuntiy to see up close live. I had 5th row seats at Forum in LA--I think it was around 79-80. Great stuff.

  • excelente recuerdo genesis en el tour 1976 wind and wuthering and trick of the tail..

  • This concert IS awesome. Bill Bruford is the fucking man. I was pumped when I relised that this was one of the bonus features on the Trick of the Tail double disc.

  • I'll second that, Sir!

the thing starts playing and we're not seeing the performance for more than three minutes (!), but I'm thinking "There's a cripsness and tight quality to this performance, rather unusual for this band," and then I see why: Bruford's presence, clarity and musicianship!!

  • hmm I could go for those techs.

  • Anyone ever notice that this particular show Rutherford really gets into the music. I'm suspecting it has a lot to do with Bruford's penchant for mixing technical with great driving hooks. Any other footage prior or after this show, Rutherford is in his usual mellow zone.

  • I noticed that too, he moves around a lot more and he seems to take a much more dynamic persona.

I guess because since they were being filmed, and Phil isn't always up-front, that he had to be a bit of a lead man too. It's nice to see these guys enjoying themselves so much.

  • Its kinda silly but my favorite part of this song has always been that little "bitty-bah" bit @ 2:54. So whimsical. I think Peter Gabriel used to do a little hopscotch prance at this part...wonder if Phil did anything or just saved his energy for the tambourine?

  • also like the bit of "Stagnation" that Tony sneaks onto the end there... ;)

  • Yeah, he's always thrown that into "Wardrobe". Fits very well I must say.

  • Isn´t it Gabriel singing here?

  • Nah, it's Phil Collins. Gabriel had already left by this point.

  • Comment removed

  • Energiczna "pokazówka" Collins`a do dziś wzbudza moje emocje na koncercie.

Prawie każdy zespół ma swoich wyjątkowych "technicznych". Podziwiam i lustruję ich każdy ruch, bo prócz siły trzeba poszczycić się dobrym słuchem i talentem.

  • I love how, immediatley after the song is over, Tony takes off the hat. He's not a very showy man at all, but he certainly has a goddamn lot of talent.

  • In this song, Phil is as high as the sky. LMAO

  • Silly critics that used to say Genesis did not have a sense of humor, that the music was too "stuck up", etc.

    Those who can, do...

    Those who can't, review!

  • Philip Collins haha

  • I buy the remastered of A Trik of The Tail. Anyone nows is the concert is complete in the DVD extra?

    Thanks.

  • 70's roadies are the best

  • Well, I worked for a bit with the Cincinnati Stage Hands Union here in Cincy, and I can tell you that we, they, work their ass offs with far more equipment. I remember Genesis toured with 5 trucks I believe in 78. Which was a ton at that time. We did Van Halen around 2004, 03 with 13 or 15 trucks.

  • I've seen The Musical Box playing the trick of the tail show last week, and I must say that they're really good. Looking at this video I was like "is this the musical box or genesis?" although I'm sure it's the real genesis.

If you've always wanted to see genesis, but never had the chance to, your best chance to see the old shows is the musical box, they're great :D

  • i know what i like,and i like what i know

  • You can get it on the SACD release of Trick of the Tail. Great drumming by Bill Bruford.

  • I like Gabriel and Collins.....but COLLINS by a football field.

  • agreed

  • In my opinion Peter is better than Collins...but in this live Phil is fucking good

  • Yep!

  • class.........

  • Peter Gabriel was better than Phil Collins w/ singing. But I liked that tambourine trick.

  • Jestemsobie123, two things... 1st) Phil played the Artful Dodger in the stage version of "Oliver" When he was young. so he was always comfortable performing (also a damn fine drummer)

2nd) After Peter left the band he went and say them, with Phil singing. Backstage after the show, Peter told Phil "You sing my songs better than I do, but you'll never sing them as well as I do".

  • Meant to say... After Peter left the band, he went and saw them with Phil singing.

  • wow, that 2nd thing confused me, lol, "You sing my songs better than i do, but you'll never sing them as well as i do", yeah, i bet phil was a bit confused too or maybe it's just me...

  • The actual quote that Peter said to Phil after the show he saw was "You sing the songs better than I do, but you'll never sing them LIKE I do" ... which is true, and makes much more sense :)

  • Excellent Concert...!!!Best Genesis Lineup...What's the name of this movie,pls...anyone??

  • It is from "A trick of the tail" double disc cd/dvd

  • seems to be roadies doing what they do with the band playing in the background perhaps they know what they like?

  • CLASSIC GENESIS with BILL BRUFORD on drums.

I'VE SEEN THEM MANY TIMES, BUT THIS LINEUP IS GREAT. Special on PBS years ago

  • I have this movie. It's pretty interesting.

  • wat movie is it?? thanks

  • Ah man, I don't remember what it's called, but I think I got it from the DVD of the Remastered CD/DVD version of A Trick of The Tail.

  • alright cheers dude

  • Cheers indeed. Lol.

  • just seen them on tv the rome 2007 and this wardrope track pure magic. liz

  • I've seen them live at the amsterdam ArenA in 2007, they're old but still awesome.

  • GRAN TEMA

  • Phil drummed the effing shit outta this!!!

  • My favorite version of this song....

  • yup underware hehehehe i know this vid like my own hand

  • you wank a lot then? :O))

  • did someone throw something on stage during his tamourine solo?

  • yes it was a sweat band

  • Just like watching Air's Talisman live on the DVD that comes with their Talkie Walkie CD, Bill Bruford's performance on this song really hit the musician part of me and for the life of me I will learn how to play his version of this song.

I cant go a day not without listening to this.

  • Whoa. I picked up that CD with the DVD but never actually watched it all the way through, no idea Bruford had played with them. Pulling it out now to have a look.

  • Where can I obtain a copy of this DVD?Please give me the ordering info if you know. Thanks whoever...

  • It's with the special edition of the "A Trick Of The Tail" CD

  • Fantastic! Phil is amazing!

  • For a guy who can't read music, Collins rocks it. You can see that it's not just about him when he's on stage, versus Gabriel, who although was solid, the show was all about his antics and less about the band actually putting on a real performance

  • Yes,is great!

  • That's my husband's hat. It was filmed at Bingley Hall,Staffordshire. He and his mate both threw their hats on stage. By the way Pete was way better than Phil!!
