The English versions have nothing to do with this patriotic song of Chinese strength against the Japanese. The rose is used as a symbol of China. The storm is the Japanese invasion. Shanghai was invaded in 1937, so the White Goddess has someone singing the song three years before it was recorded. My translation, which I am still polishing, will be posted on another site with this song.
I read it on another post that during that time, the Shianghai orchestras were almost all played by White Russian musicians. Wow, what beautiful sounds they produced. And how perfect it is to have this song to be in "White Countess". I just hope they used this superb original recording. The band makes what to be there in person.
This is the first time Iv`e heard this song since the late 1940s, when it was requested quite a lot on programmes like the Sunday two way family favourites. Men would whistle it in those days! How times have changed ! Thanks for the posting
I am just 24 years and I love this song reminds me of my grandmother, for the good times. Is more than feelings, a beautiful melody. My congratulations from El Salvador Central America.
If I remember rightly, I first heard this piece on Sunday 31.12.1950 in a new programme which started that day. I believe the compère was Wilfred Thomas. I am glad to have found it again.
Remember this from my childhood in the early 50s. My father had the 78. I also thank you for posting this, very nostalgic. Seems to have hit a chord with others of my age.
Was first introduced to this song in the movie by Peter Greenaway called "Pillowbook" starring Vivian Wu. Also, I was listening to an old 1972 Concert in Japan by Emerson,Lake and Palmer and during a keyboard solo by Keith Emerson he plays this melody!
Hey! I loved this version. I just came back from a tour in China with two other girls and we sang this song in English. Tomorrow we have been invited to a Chinese New Year even to sing (back home in Toronto) and we're braving it in Chinese! Thanks :)
Great! Yao Lee also recorded a second version some years later...This is the version which is featured in 'The Pillow Book' by Peter Greenaway. The complete verion here took some time to dig up! :o) Glad you like it!

Retrotor - well done for posting this.
This was a big hit here in the UK around 1950/51 along with 'Put Another Nickel In - Music Music Music'
No tv then only radio. This being placed well out of reach on a high shelf. As I was only around 4 this was a wise move by my parents.
Thanks - Mike Newcomb

eychung 3 years ago
玫瑰玫瑰心兒堅
玫瑰玫瑰刺兒尖
來日風雨來摧毀
毀不了並蒂枝連理
玫瑰玫瑰我愛你

Sorry, you have to read the lyrics backwards: section 3, then 2, then 1.
