A particular reason why singlish sounds so weird is that some stresses are in the wrong places. And listen closely, even if there aren't tones, there are ups and downs which aren't really present in singlish which is rather flat. It takes being in a foreign country to really know how even the "proper" singaporean english has an accent.

I think because sg is reallyreally multicultural so our accent has some Malay, china and Indian accents. I can speak proper English well but if I'm among sgreans like me, adding a bit of a cheena or malay accent really spices up the conversation. A particular reason why singlish sounds so weird is that some stresses are in the wrong places. And listen closely, even if there aren't tones, there are ups and downs which aren't really present in singlish which is rather flat. It takes being in a foreign country to really know how even the "proper" singaporean english has an accent.

I think because sg is reallyreally multicultural so our accent has some Malay, china and Indian accents. I can speak proper English well but if I'm among sgreans like me, adding a bit of a cheena or malay accent really spices up the conversation. I mean I'm chinese but wif my malay frens, I will speak differently. but overall, singaporeans have fairly good English :) in fact, I think we speak really well, compared to other asians... we write well as well though ;)

We Singaporeans use singlish in our common lives, if we really want to speak proper English, we can, we study British English from Cambridge, I see some Taiwanese celebrities still need a translator when speaking to Eurasians.... And we don't need it!!!
