I think the .01 books is a reflection of devaluation in the book market just as has happened in other markets. I make a rule...if I cant sell a book for $10.00 I dont sell it on Amazon...I donate them.
You're right, I just started to sell my dvd's on Amazon but I'm begining to realize that some of the same dvd's are already listed for a penny to a dollar. Now how can I make a profit against the other sellers if they're selling the same dvd for a lot cheaper then what I would like to sell mine? There's a $2.98 S&H fee amazon credit to its sellers and that's just about all the profit I've made so far. I'm begining to re-think this selling business. What do U think about amazon FBA program??
@knowledgeispowerfful I can definitely identify with your situation. You know I've been considering participating in the Fulfillment by Amazon program. It sounds pretty good if sales stay consistent.
@realitycheqq Say for example if u're in the FBA program, and U have amazon sell one of your bks for $10.00 but yet there R other sellers selling that same bk that is new or used for $1.00, which price do U think the buyer is going to choose?? probably the only way you'll get your bk sold for $10.00 over all the other sellers is if Amazon offer their Super Saving Shipment, and for that the buyer would have to spend $25.00 or more, and I think U have to pay storage fee in the FBA? Good luck!!

There is money to be made in selling penny books. Most of them are mega sellers that get a discounted shipping rate from the USPS. If you ship 300 or more at one time then you can save about 75c per book.
These companies are getting the books very cheap and most of the time for free taking whats left of big booksales.
So if they crank out 1000 books per day there's money to be made.
Personally I don't sell anything that's under $5.00 but everyone has a different business model.
My experience as an amazon customer when buying books at marketplace that are cheaper than amazons book price: they don`t ship the cheaper books to you. Sorry cannot ship to your adress. Buy a book on marketplace thats more expensive than amazons price they will ship to you.
I just got my own "reality check" today. I too sell books on Amazon. Some for .01 because that's the lowest price. Here's the breakdown. I get .01 +3.99. OUT of that Amazon get's .99 flat rate fee & 1.35 per transaction VARIABLE fee. That Leaves 1.66. It costs me 2.38 for the smallest paperback to mail it. Therefore it COSTS me apx .80 per transaction to sell books. I just CULLED my inventory. If you sell for less than 1.67 per book (to break even) you pay Amazon.
I avoid .01 books for that reason. It helps to upgrade to a Pro Seller account if you sell more than 40 books a month. For a $40 a month fee, the $.99 per transaction fee is waived. The higher volume .01 book sellers must get some kind of bulk shipping deal that allows them to ship books at a cheaper price.
I just went round & round with Amazon. They told me they dont have a selling platform for smaller sellers. Hell, most of their sellers ARE smaller sellers. They are raping the system & us. I agree about the $40 per month, I don't sell at that volume. I had to pull 25 books off and donate them. I only sell books to help my daughter buy hers. I;ll write to you later with more info. I get VERY angry about this. Not only does Amazon get away with this but people allow it.
You are right. I have found in my own experience that most books ship for around $2.77
A book would have to weigh more than 5 lbs to cost more than $3.99 to ship. But Amazon does take part of the money in fees so there still isn't much left over.

They make money because most books will cost less than $3.99 to ship. Same with CDs, DVDs, games etc...
