  • Primo would be champ today.

  • This may seem odd but after watching tthis fight I see roy jones style here in its roots, minus the show boating of rjj and the fact louis jabbed more the style of joe and prime rjj are very similar here

  • many thanks to the uploader. primo was a very decent boxer at a golden age of boxing and there were not many in the class of louis to begin with. carnera was mocked for his clumsiness but he moved about as well as a guy could at that size.

  • Primo was reaching in with his jab and continually circling into Joe's right hand. If Loughran's right hand wasn't made of fine china he'd whooped Primo too. Just goes to show that bigger isn't better, better is better!

  • Primo fought many fighters past their prime, brought out of retirement (ie. Tomato cans) who probably were probably just collecting a paycheque. This is exactly what still happens today when fighters are developed. Occasionally, he was defeated by crafty veterans like Larry Gains, so I don't buy he only fought setups. Just watching this fight and his championship fights I would say that Carnera was definitely underrated.

  • It is a proven fact that Primo's fights mostly were fixed. For a guy his size im surprised he lasted so long. When he fought his fights he would step on his opponents feet. Also when he fought close, the other fighters would complain about Primo's breath, as it smelled very very garlicky. I guess primo before his fights, would eat garlic to sicken the other fighter. These were quotes from past fighters.

  • It is a proven fact that @burtwiseman is Clueless.

    Just read his posts.

  • What? Better training? A buffed 265 lb. guy with barely a pound of fat on him, who moved well, hanging tough with a young Joe Louis as long he did; it's safe say conditioning wasn't a problem.

  • Carnera was actually pretty good..

  • aside the raw punching power Primo was a better boxer than the other giants such B Baer and Abe Simon. He understimated Luis before the match, thinking that he can outpointed him.

  • This first round shows Carnera had an excellent left jab.

  • Joe Louis had a whole heap of heart. He was not from the future, he was from the same era as the rest of them, and thats why he was special. The Brown Bomber !

  • Yes, Primo had lots of heart, taking straight right hands from Joe Louis like that! He beat Walter Neusel a top 10 fighter after this fight. Unfortunately, Primo's diabetes ended his career. He was in remarkable shape for a man of his size. I don't compare fighters from other eras, it is like comparing Babe Ruth to Barry Bonds?

  • Primo Carnera had tons of heart. He's way under rated as a boxer. He was in with a young Joe Louis, who was awesome. Carnera was always in great shape. Put Carnera in a time machine to 1953 and he might have given Rocky Marciano more than he could handle.

  • @PUGCAT Not to dis on anyone's favoritism, but Carnera was a hack. Half of his fights were fixed, not far off from how we look at Valuev or the Klitschkos today. He had heart, but Managers took that & his money.

Max Baer knocked him down 11 times, Carnera got the benefit of the doubt from the ref & kept running away, but Baer's hard rights did the job.

If Baer the Brawler easily took Carnera, than Marciano would have destroyed him. Rocky was quick, strong & could counter very well.

  • But don't get me wrong, I think he possessed the inner fighter, and could take a punch. But his opponents often weighted 50-60lbs less than he did & usually several inches shorter. His unusual size, especially for those times captured the attention of low-life managers looking for a quick buck.

Carnera wasn't the brightest guy, and with better training and management he could have been a fighter to remember. But like many fighters he fell victim to the greed of promoters. He retired broke

  • @tftmc posts clueless crap.

  • @marcxopoco Obviously...since you do such a better job, lol.

  • @tftmc the ankle that Baer brooke falling into with his knee, did the job

  • @PUGCAT His problem was that he couldn't punch with his full weight. He was better than Jess Willard for sure, but Marciano would have wrecked him 10/10 times

  • Valuev doesn't drop his left as consistently as Carnera did. So in this respect is less fundamentally flawed than Carnera.

  • It seems to be the style of the time. Lots of heavyweights I've watched from that era had low hands... Carnera was miles better than Valuev IMO.

  • Carnera drops his left when he throws the jab. Louis can counter over the top the the jab all day and did.

  • carnera had lots of guts brave man

  • You right , in this fight he was 120 kg.

vs Sharkey the first fight he was 111 kg because the overtraining.

  • Primo Carnera was a top heavyweight at the time, just Joe Louis was AWESOME in his prime. Primo Carnera hung in there, moved well, got a few good shots in. He didn't fold like Kingfish Lewvinsky!

  • Primo won (by points) over Lewinsky , too.

  • I think Louis felt sorry for Primo, as Primo was a set-up by the mob. Owney Madden controlled Primo and set-up most of his fights. This fight that you are seeing is no set-up. It shows the big guy like he really was terrible.

  • You wrong , dunno why yoy hate Primo so much, because the movie? As a big man he did much better vs Luis then Abe Simon and , considering the whole match no worsen then Buddy Buer that was ko cold at the end.

  • Wow, your spelling terrible. I do not hate Primo, im just stating facts. I did a lot of research about Primo. Primo was a kind and good man, but was set up my Madden. I don't think he really knew how bad he was, as most of his fights were set-ups.

  • If you carefully see the few fights hosted here , you may note a good boxer , surely better than Valuev . Vs JL Primo did not worsen that the most part of Luis 's opponent ,that felt in an handful of rounds against him. In his prime, nobody ( both the Baers includes) can face Joe Luis (except a lucky Schemmeling , that was obliterated in the rematch) . So , Primo lost against the best hw (or nearly the best) of all time. Where is so a bad boxer in this fight?

  • Halfwit @burtwiseman does his "research" by reading fiction written by pansies who never had a fight with their own sister.

  • >who never had a fight with their own sister

that's not a worrying thing to say at all

  • In this fight Primo was thinner, around 240 .

  • Are you sure? Primo was only 111 kg in this fight.

  • Carnera was 260½ lbs while Louis was 196 lbs.
