  • Like I understand double clutching, but does it matter if you give it a little too much gas? I mean the point is to raise the revs to where they are gonna be when u go to the lower gear but how often are u gonna be THAT precise?

  • @surfordie82 even though I'm not the best person to answer you question (not very much experience with the technique) I'll do it anyway. you should always strive to get it perfect, practice and practice. but it's a hard thing to do and it is not like a few rpm's will throw you off the road.

  • "I'm going to: Clutch in..."

    Wrong!

    SUPERFAIL!!!

  • i don't know what this acheives...?

  • @vdn17 just makes downshifting while braking smoother, if you're in a fast rear wheel drive car and brake heavily and just shift a gear, your transmission can lock the rear wheels meaning you lose control of the car, this problem is made worse if braking round a corner on a track etc :)

  • New Balance product placement?

  • every American I have seen heel toe sifting uses the ball of their feet to do both the braking and tapping the accelerator. But every Japanese person I've seen do it have tapped the accelerator with their heel, which I think looks a bit cooler lol

  • @nzman101 it depends on how your pedals are setup ..

  • "If you were a passenger in the car.. (which you almost are).. you would have noticed"

  • isnt that actually toe-toe downshifting? haha its no big but the whole reason its called heel-toe is cause youe heel is on the break and toe is on the gas... but its o big you just used toe for both. lol

  • I like the way he explains it in the beginning as if this is the hardest thing in the world and he is a beast for doing it. "im going to clutch, in WHILE IM BRAKING, move my right foot WHICH IS BRAKING"... "Those were very smooth too.." Damn dude you have such a manual ego. Btw nice shorts -__-

  • ''...is to keep braking while you downshift which normally requires three feet''

i clutch with my left and brake with me right = 2 feet

  • iF u WeRe a PaSsEnGeR u WoUlD haV3 nOtiCeD hOw sM00th

quit driving your dads subaru and go back to your geo metro

  • @justinariasdrummer quit hating asshole. although this dude needs to get a tan ASAP

  • Heel toe downshift is easier said than done. You need to blip the throttle JUST RIGHT so as to not over-rev or under-rev. It may seem (at least to me) that heel toe is easier when you're racing and are in the high-rev zone as you can just blip the throttle down HARD and you can almost always get the rev-matches down perfectly. If you're doing it on normal streets driving at like 3k rpm and you want to heel toe, it's going to be harder...

  • DUDE, YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN WHILE YOU ARE DOING REV MATCH. IT SEEMS YOU FORGOT THAT YOU ARE MAKING AN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO. YOU STARTED WELL BUT AT THE END, YOU STOPPED EXPLAINING.

  • I can do heel-toe now :) Works ace. Been doing double clutching too but that dosen't really benifit modern cars at all.

  • damn, usually u do heel toe for entering corners and maintain high rotation..

your foot usually goes in transversal, and not longitudinal..

and, yes, its really hard when ur speedin!

  • i thought when you brake you need to clutch so your car dosent stall....or is that for stopping

  • @AnTHoNyB1125 thats for when stopping haha. so it dosent stall.

  • @CR4NN3RZ yea...thats why the first time i drove a stick shift car every time i would slow down i clutch......

  • i don't need to heel/toe, I just press the brake with my dick

  • Still having a hard time learning this...

Cant seem to find a comfortable position for my right foot which allows me to depress the throttle without pushing the brake harder, end up either jerking the car or locking up. I drive an HR30 Skyline and the brake sits about an inch and a half higher than the gas pedal. Any idea what im doing wrong?

  • @ScotchRB30DET I know what you mean. Ive got the same problem.

  • @TommyChapman Worked it out, instead of trying to actually use your heel, position your foot half off the brake pedal and use the lower right side of your foot to blip the throttle, much easier and far less awkward, getting a lot more consistent now.

  • @ScotchRB30DET Thanks, I'll give that a go.

  • @ScotchRB30DET thats good for beginners and getting used to the style/way of downshifting. but when your out in a track races, you have to learn the real heel toe. Its essential that your foot doesnt slip off the brakes when your coming into a corner at any speed.

  • everything he's taught me is "very simple" lol

  • ur supposed to brake with left and with the heel of ur braking foot rev the gas with the right

  • double clutch is no no...stick to regular shifting. even the pros drive it normal..

  • i haven't really found an opportunity to heel toe rev match downshift... i rev match... but no heel action going on here... i can see how it's a racing technique... i've never needed that lol... i only rev match when i downshift for smoothness in driving.

  • I think what a lot of people fail to realize is while the "motions" of a heel-toe braking downshift are easy to master, and fairly easy to be "smooth" at in driving conditions- Heel toe being used properly in a racing environment is easily one of the most difficult things to ever control properly (especially in non abs vehicles). Dont let anyone tell you otherwise, theyre either ignorant, or wrong. Threshold braking is already extremely difficult without adding in an awkward foot motion to it.

  • It's easy to heel toe, the hard part is tapping the gas pedal and having the perfect rev match so the shift can be smooth.

  • he thinks he's hot shit

  • its sooo much easier to do it in his car beacause the accelerator and the brake are fairly close.... in my car there so much further from each other =(

  • he reminds me of the the fat dude in along came polly..."i just sharted"....

  • hes still a douche bag...

  • i usually clutch in first, brake and then blip the throttle while shifting to a lower gear. It comes in handy for sudden turns when you're going to fast. It's also great for canyon runs

  • yea that usually what i do too ill put the clutch in first the break then downshift

  • Comment removed

  • I understand that heel-toe downshifting is used primarily for turning a corner, but can it be used in normal downshifting situations in everyday driving? for example, i'm in 5th gear going 50mph and I slow down to 40, would it be advisable to heel-toe from 5th into 4th?

    thanks.

ps: i successfully heel-toed today for the first time and I didn't really think about it...I just did it.

  • Use it every time! It makes every shift smoother.

  • @laudypapa1 yep and actually that's the best way to do it, you can heel & toe anytime you want going strait or conering. the more you do the better you get, never let it get out of practice always have yur skill sharp. I do it alot when a car stops in front of me, or coming to a stop light, going 50 in 5th, 5 to 4 to3 to 2. I have even timed mine, it takes me about 1.8 sec to downshift 3 gears.

  • hey just a question i notice you didnt double clutch while doing this i know like it aint a race but if your trying to save your clutch/engine you should maybe try some double clutching and heel and toe at the same time, thats what ive done and my car with 320 000km is still on the original clutch!

  • show me a vid where somebody is double clutching while using heel toe please... cause that seems way too hard.

  • haha, well im not sure about on youtube, but in the movie grand prix they do it

  • haha i actually found one on youtube ill post it later today... looks like i gotta start practicing.

  • @divine101 thats how its MEANT to be done....

  • @ScotchRB30DET ive recently learned how to do this... no point really... my car doesnt have that much power for me to double clutch heel toe...

  • Your steps don't involve rev matching, so the car will jerk down shifting, which is harder on the passengers.

  • You fucking dick are you new to driving, not done your test if you look it's a FAIL you TIT learn to drive.

  • Your steps will create this situation:

    1. Brake

    2. Clutch in

    3. Move to lower gear

    4. Assuming you again release the clutch (you didn't specify)

    5. Car will LURCH, throwing passengers forward and upsetting the weight balance which can be dangerous even in normal driving situations (i.e. RWD on snow or ice - your dumb ass would probably lose it and end up in a tree)

    6. Holy shit, you crashed and look like a jackass (or caused whiplash for your passengers - still a jackass)

    "BE SAFE AND SMOOTH!!"

  • @cconant13 he's performing the right technique, during a wet or snowy situation, he will have more control and no chance of braking the rear loose. seems like you know nothing of hee & toe or racing technique at all. everything must be smooth to not up set the car's balance.

maybe you should learn how to shift fast without jerking the car, always a good place to start.

  • I was responding to another comment, not the guy in the video. I don't know where it is anymore but he listed the steps your average moron would use to downshift, which would upset the vehicle's balance. Please don't malign me without checking what I was talking about.

Also, I am capable of shifting fast without jerking the car, but for the purposes of videos I like to utilize all of my 341 lb-ft to spin into second. It's more fun that way.

  • @cconant13 lolololololololol

  • i cant do that in my wrx, my vans shoes are to big =0

  • subaru ftw

  • how do you mount your camera?

  • when you use your right foot you put it on the brake and the heel on the gas when you hit the gas the gear have to be in neutral? or it can be

    1) brake

    2) clutch

    3)down gear

    4) heel toe

  • WHO LIKES SHORT SHORTS

  • @testify221 I LIKE SHORT SHORTS!

  • um, not a very aggressive style.. what happens at higher rpm/more aggressive braking? you'll find that you need to blip the trottle more, ie. with your heel, hence heel toe, this video shows rev matching at low speeds

  • stop driving subarus in parking lots and braking with your left foot, you aren't that cool.

  • @sassafrass1 fucking hilarious...breaking with the left foot

  • @sassafrass1 whats up your ass sassafrass

  • @sassafrass1 1. dont hate cuz you cant lern 2 turbo. 2. dont hate on left foot braking, its something every driver should do on the track. 3. dont hate cuz you dont got 3 feet.

  • @turismoskunk Not every driver. Only turbo drivers. I honestly don't see any point in keeping on the gas under braking unless you're trying to keep boost up.

  • @turismoskunk but I do agree, people gotta stop hating on this guy. Some of his videos are pretty informative, who cares what he looks like?

  • @AsAngelsFall221 Americans....

  • @nunayafb What's that supposed to mean? Your profile suggests you are American. However, I forgot about FWD drivers. I'm 16 and have only recently begun driving cars, so I still have a ways to go before I can actually do some of these techniques, so I suppose I'll just stay quiet for now.

  • @AsAngelsFall221 Americans care about what he looks like, that is the question of yours I responded to. Americans are hung up on appearances.

  • @nunayafb Oh. I see, sorry for the confusion. I agree, people need to stfu about his appearance. Appearance has nothing to do with car control.

  • lol wow tats the worst way of heel toe ive ever seen but if it wrks 4 ya then its all good.

  • wont braking with the left foot cause the engine to stall...

  • You don't brake with the left foot ,the left foot is for the clutch and you brake and press the gas with the right foot at the same time.

  • Left foot braking is a technique used in racing.

  • You use the left for the clutch ,If you don't the engine could stall. Again the right you use to brake and press the gas when doing this.

  • only if you come to a complete stop without pressing the clutch.

  • Yes

  • so you can still use your left foot for breaking, as long as you downshift before the engine runs too low.

  • And you need to push the clutch in to shift gears.

  • or course.

  • Did you have to adjust the accelerator pedal forward a bit? I find myself stepping on the brake more as i try to reach the throttle

  • lovin the subaru

  • Many touge racers using 1992-1995 Honda Civic Hatchbacks use this technique to make it around corners quickly and smoothly. Just stop complaining about this technique being used on older cars. Some people just wanna have fun and feel professional behind their standard transmission vehicle. I'm still practicing this because it seems like fun. :P

  • GIVE US A 4WD BURNOUT VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! True rally drivers would do that :P

  • 1) Why are your double clutching? Was your car made before the 60's? Apparently not as you seem to have 5 gears.

    2) Why are you left foot braking? Unless you are riding the edge of traction through a sweeper turn in a RWD racecar set up to understeer, there is no point in left-foot braking... and if that were the case, you'd stiffen your rear ARB.

These are not street-driving techniques... and have absolutely no beneficial purposes

  • He isnt double clutching, and left foot braking is commonly used in 4WD cars to help cure their inherent understeer.

But i agree, none of the demonstrated techniques have any benifits to normal street driving.

  • ok so cant he just do it because he wants to. i have the feeling you dont find it important because you can do it

  • So, its sort of like a double clutch, only with the brakes on?

  • Just a quick show of hands I'm a Brit a European an over there its like 90% of the cars are manual transmissions where as it seems like in north america its the other way round

so I live in Canada now quick show of hands How many people use the "Man Pedal" (Clutch) as in can drive a manual gear box?

  • I drive a Manual, and im 17. My first car is a manual and i love it.

  • Wow! You so amazing.

  • Both my Mazda and Datsun are manual.

  • my 6 MG B's Triumph TR7 TR4 an 1951 MG TD are all manual

but i don't try fancy manoeuvres in them other than matching engine rev's when the synchromesh's worn

  • Whats it called when you pass a car with out downshifting to gain revs? My brother was calling it double clutching because you press the clutch twice.

When i told him what double clutching really was he said its also for passing cars without downshifting.... Can you explain what he is talking about?

  • passing? i don't know you should't have to double clutc(clutch in-nutral-clutch out-clutch in-change gear) if you have a constent mesch synchronized transmission you don't have to do this.

it is done to match the speed of the transmision componints in a

    unsynchronized transmission

  • Well he is calling it double clutching because you pressing the clutch twice... no shifting is being done with the gear lever. basicly he is taping the clutch 2 times to build rpm.

  • from the sounds of it he is trying to get more power in the car by revving up the engine and dropping the clutch. This doesn't really do anything except hurt your clutch and make it feel like you suddenly start to accelerate. He is actually slowing down before trying to accelerate and he'll be better off either downshifting or just gunning it.

  • only ever need to do that if as ethan says the gear box does not have synchro mesh gears which most newish cars have like 10years or less if its a classic car might have a Crash box which means all the gears are cut an no syncromesh so you have to match the revs much closer to shift gears

you can change gears without the clutch but its recomend you dont try i usually only do it on 3rd 4th 5th with accelerating at low ish speeds or from 5th to 4th

  • but from what you've said it just sounds like he's riding the clutch so he's an idiot because that just ruins your clutch an well thats money down the drain. *Kick him for me*

he's better off down shifting just for an initial boost before quickly up shifting once more

I do the heel toe downshift thing but i put my heel on the brake an toe on the throttle i see the author twists his ankle to the side to blip the throttle

  • I call it clutch kicking. =/

I stole the word from drift videos.

When we all go our licenses at school we used to call that double clutching as well.

  • OK now THAT was impressive, so what was all the sh*t with the double clutching and J-turns in the other vids? ????

  • Ha i watched the double clutching and done that good tried the downshift and made the gearbox lock up until i turned it off and started it back up :P

  • how did you manage that? over rev?

  • Im not entirely sure i think i was revvin it to show off and must have stuffed up with the clutch and revving. Im assuming a gear was stuck? Anyways i turned it off tried to start normally and wouldnt work. TUrned it off again started it up without touching and thing and felt a gear go clunk and yer been good ever since lol thank god

  • okay well i can't think what it could be for it to lock up like that other than possibly a fault with the gearbox. Or you didn't have the clutch all the way down when you tryed to put it in gear.

ohh no wait by any chance did you put it into reverse when you down shifted? that would do damage.

Still what does it teach you! don't try an show off

cause 1/10 times you may look like a fool

  • if I revs are too high I normally double clutch because Im afraid I might burn the clutch more if I heel-toe. its the same thing isnt it?

  • heel toe and double clutch?

no there not the same at all.

  • I started heel toe-ing when I was 17 after seeing Mark Martin using it in NASCAR. I was only driving a beat up Mazda B2000 Truck at the time, but I've done it with every vehicle since...

Makes a real car (like my STi) respond so nicely when driving in "spirited" mode. :)

  • gonna go try it in my girlfriends car

    SWEET

  • damn i like hes nice with it =)

  • u r god....nice though

  • does anyone else thinks he sounds a little like seth rogen? haha thanks for the video

  • Why do you put ur left foot on the brake...

  • Because you need the left foot for the clutch

  • Uhh what?

his left foot is going on the brake...

you use your right foot for brake/gas left for clutch.

HE USES left foot for brake, right for gas.

    Not right. but oh well

  • It's a technique. Nothing wrong with it. Al ot of racers do it.

  • Yeahh i've just never seen it done with the left foot kind of thing.

Pretty cool, tried it today, and yes i hit the brakes really hard.

  • I do it out of comfort. I was taught how to left foot brake in Rally school so now I still do it. I'll try and make a video explaining why and how to left foot brake. If you ever try it, please first do it in an empty parking lot. You're going to hit the brake too hard. I can guarantee that.

  • @twoguysrally Haha, I can attest to that. Left foot too used to the clutch pedal.

  • @XxXDrummerxXx If you were keen of racing you would ev known

  • @Pupixario this was a year ago, i had no idea about anything to do with it.

haha i know about it all now. no worries

  • @XxXDrummerxXx He was reducing understeer

  • you seem like a good driver! Do you race karts or cars?

  • Cars. I did karts a longggggggg time ago for a very short time. I also broke my leg in a kart and my parents weren't a fan of them after that :\. C'est la vie.

  • @twoguysrally i race karts too. those things are fun if you know how to drive!!!

  • so bad just blipping the throttle with the side of your foot -_-... easier for your foot to slip off the brake pedal. you should actually be using your heel to blip the throttle.

  • che cazzo stai facendo?? ma non serve na mazza fatto così

  • FUK YOUR NEW BALANCE...IT'S UGLY LIKE YOUR FACE!!!!!

you are just not a smooth dick no matter your car is smooth or not...

  • "Normally that would require...3 feet."

  • Thanks for all your videos man! keep it up. Driving is becoming a lost art.

  • wow wat a dumbass ur not supposed to use your left foot for braking its in the drivers manual.not even when your driving manual. haha

  • my girlfriends bro has an old 96 honda accord coupe sitting in the yard thats all seized up but i was just sitting in it playing around. i find my legs are too long no matter how far i put the seat back to toe the brake and heel the gas. is it ok to heel the brake and toe the gas cuz i find thats comfortable. some might say its incorrect but is it ok? or is it a bad habit and should i just practice with pain.

  • thats fine. it all depends on what car and you your capabilitys. i was giving the guy that made this video a hard time cause he doesnt know what hes talking about and looks like an idiot in this video. but its whatever suits you. as long as it gets the job done. at first it may feel kind of awkward but with practice it will feel natural and is a most do when on the track or just flying through the twisties in the middle of no where. really helps exit speeds and keep your car well balanced.

  • fuck spoonit, youre about an idiot, go read a book and learn how to spell some simple words.

  • did you say im 18 and own an s2000 and ill shit on your face.. thats what i thought you said. and its spoonit(R). for i used to have an integra type R and had a shit load of spoon sports stuff on it. you are the idiot along with the dude in the video. i could care less about my spelling its fucking youtube not a book report for english class you fuck. and i capitalized the R for you in itR so you could see and understand it easier. figured it might make more sense to you now.

  • you're 18 and you own a bag full of shit.

Nice work on your spelling this time around though, your momma must be proud to have such an uneducated fuck for a son. Who lies about what kind of car he drives on the internet.

  • Yeah spoonit, so you found a picture, and have 3 videos (none are more than 25 seconds) of an s2000? Sorry bro, i didnt realize you had PROOF. If i had time i'd "prove" that i have a fucking rocketship, let me go search some 20 second nasa videos.

  • ha i dont care what you think you fuck.. i know what i have. if you cant believe o well doesnt hurt me at all. i can upload my stock exhaust and no exhaust and tsudo exhaust comparison if youd like? i just dont have that much time to do stuff like that. but hold on check my profile later on and you can see my comparison.

  • thats cool man, i could care less than you do about what the fuck kind of geo metro exhaust sound in the dark videos you have.

  • dumbass i said check later as in probably tomorrow night when i feel like finalizing the disk and uploading them. i havent put them on yet.

  • I wont care tomorrow night either spoonit.

  • also your suppost to double declutch so youll first use your toe to depress the brake pedal and slow the car down and when the car is at the appropriate speed youll fully depresses the clutch pedal and now youll shift to neutral. then you release the clutch and rotate your right foot to operate the throttle with your heel increasing the engine speed to match the required rpm for the selected gear. then the clutch pedal is depressed and the correct gear is selected & then the clutch is released.

  • what is his point in using left foot braking? lol i think its pointless, can someone prove me wrong?

  • heel and toe is used before entry into a turn while a vehicle is under braking preparing the transmission to be in the optimal gear to accelerate out of the turn. one benefit of downshifting before entering a turn is to eliminate the jolt to the drivetrain, or any other unwanted dynamics. the jolt will not upset the vehicle as badly when going in a straight line but the same jolt while turning may upset the vehicle enough to cause loss of control if it occurs after the turn has begun.

  • Another benefit it allows you to downshift at the last moment before entering the turn after you have started braking and the car has slowed so the engine speed when the lower gear is engaged will not be too high.

  • also back when race cars first were developed the gas pedal was placed on the left side of the brake pedal so both pedals could be pushed more easily. that was called stemming for the idiots that dont know.. do you know what the apex of a turn is hcnguyen86 or do you need me to explain that to and the purpose of it?? please just ask but hey im only 18.

  • what's an elephant doing in a rally car?

  • heal toe haha. thats for glass tranys and the track when you are slowing down real fast. smooth? i love the jerk from slaming it down a gear pulling up to a light or next to someone. not worried about my bullet prof t56.

  • of all its heel toe. not side of foot toe. so go learn how to heel toe. go to a backroad and get or track and go fast. you should not have to heel toe when your cruising around. go to a backroad get on it and heel toe and post another video of that which you probably wont cuase you dont know what your doing. and it almost sounds like you were trying so hard you would stop talking sometimes haha. if you know how to heel toe it should be a natural feel and you shouldnt struggle while doing it.

  • hey asshole, if you've ever sat in a WRX, you'll learn that the pedals are quite close together, preventing you from doing a heel to toe if you have over size four feet. He's just showing us the steps, he's not meaning to go fast. Just teach.

  • hey you fucking piece of shit, the term heel toe down shift isn't literal.

    HOW FUCKING STUPID ARE YOU!!?

ITS FUCKING OBVIOUS YOU WOULD HAVE TO ADJUST DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF YOUR FOOT.

FUCKING DUMB ASS KID, 19 YEARS OLD YOU BARELY GOT YOUR LICENSE.

  • actually im 18... and you want to put money on it. i guarentee i can drive way better then you and have way more experience then you and actually its heel and toe. and its not literal.

  • Spoon you forgot to call him a poopoo head. Thats the most important part. With all youre Leet jay de em mad tyte driving skillz you should never for this simple rule.

  • ha your funny. all i know is i know what i know and dont care what you guys think. im better then you and thats all that matters.

  • If bragging about your forza skills gives you a hardon then hey go for it slick.

  • shut the fuck up fagot. my rod to stroke ratio is way bigger then yours. and forza is gay as shit. its the fakest game ever. its as bad as need for speed. im better then you. THE END

  • And im sure everyone believes some random 18 year old homophobe on the internet is the fastest shit on 4 wheels with his honda as well. I know I do. Well youre boring me now slick.

  • never said i was the fastest. i just know your an idiot along with the guy in the video.

  • do you want to talk about the ae86? would that make you feel better?

  • do you want to talk about the mean effective pressure? if you know the displacement of yuor engine and the amount of tourque it produces you can find the MEP for that power level. oops did i lose you. sorry about that. do you know why you finnd the MEP? for better tuning and engine combustion choices DUMBASS! any one else want shit on?

  • Uh oh kiddies watch out he knows how to do simple equations to find mep. You can talk about anything youd like- ae86, mep, string theory. Youre still a fairy hiding behind the internet with empty claims.

  • funktioniert bei mir nich, mein gaspedal hängt ziemlich weit durch...ich komm beim bremsen mit der fußseite nich dran -.-

  • What is it...? lol
