@FallenQuiet thanks man. when i recorded this solo, i had been playing for 1 year. i shot a bunch of videos to make a checkpoint in my progression. such solos took me 4-5 hours of practice a day throughout months to nail it, and this video was probably the 50th take that evening :S
I am just starting to get into modes and i am memorizing the patterns decently but I don't know how to apply them, is there any info you could give me or help me figure out how certain modes can work in certain keys and why others wont? A chart for something like this would be helpful but I have yet to find one.
@METALLICA1668 i think you meant harmonic minor scale and/or phrygian dominant scale. they are relative scales just as the (normal) minor scale and the (normal) phrygian scale, but compared to the normal ones they have the same rased note to create that "arabic" feel (in the case of B minor, this note would be an A#). however, in this video i used the minor scale (B) and its relative (normal) phrygian scale (F#).
@METALLICA1668 btw, if you check my channel, you'll find a vid called "Macedonian Style", in that one I play on the E phrygian dominant scale (relative scale of the A harmonic minor)
@TheFreeMusicChannelz it's a 7-string guitar with a low B bass string. i'm not using the extra string in this vid but that Schecter was my only axe at that time...
well, the phrygian scale contains 7 different notes, while the pentatonic only 5 (penta is a Greek word which means "five" btw). here the second part of the solo is played in B minor, so if you wanted to play B minor pentatonic scale, you'd have to start from 7th fret and play the same box as the A minor pentatonic. Although there is such a scale as phrygian pentatonic, it's a different matter. For starters: the phrygian has 7 notes, and in this case these notes are: F#, G, A, B, C#, D and E.
hey thanks for the comment! not really bands but solo guitarists such as Kiko Loureiro (guitarist of Brazilian power metal band Angra) and maybe Jeff Loomis often blend scales this way. Here F#Phrygian is a relative mode of B minor which means they share the exact same notes but the intervals fall to different places (the phrygian scale starts with a minor second for example) and ofc the root note is different
0:25 ... shiiiit! nice work on that lick!!

very cool done :) This is a nice scale to play some cool riffs and licks.
hellsweethell 1 year ago
with this scale, is it just like the pentatonic.....if the riff is played in A would you play this scale in the key of A starting at the 5th fret?
