The kill, kill, kill mentality of the OT is hard to reconcile with the love your enemies of the NT.King James is hundreds of years old, most people use NIV or New American Standard. You seem to be picking & choosing your NT verses.Instead of free love,NT sex rules for men are a lot stricter than OT.In OT,a man could have unlimited wives, and sex slaves (concubines),and get divorced.Literally, polygamy and slaves not explicitly forbidden, but one wife is encouraged.Mary Magdalen not in your Bible?
And thank you for your opinions. I do value them and they're thought-provoking (I happen to follow your tumblr blog as well!). I hope you'll continually explore the Bible and keep contributing positively, as you do, to such discussions!
While I disagree with your caricatures of the old and new testaments, I do agree with the underlying spirit of your opinion. Jesus is the quintessential model of love, truth and life, and he definitely said and did revolutionary things. In the end, what underlies Christianity is submission out of love and gratitude to God, a God of mercy and justice (embodied pluralistically). Perhaps, with more research, Christians or not, will understand that sin is left to God alone to judge.
...wow. Have you ever actually read the Bible? Look, I'm not a Christian, but I was raised by a very serious pastor, and I've spent a lot of time reading the scriptures. As it happens, Jesus' main narrative is not necessarily a liberal or a conservative one, but rather one whose purpose is to submit to authority and become content and free in the redemptive power of Christ. This is why Jesus advocates submission for citizens, women, and slaves, and discourages homosexuality. Out of characters...
@TravisTagart Not explicitly. But he 1) obviously opposes fornication (which is defined as sex outside of marriage), and 2) one of his chosen disciples (Paul) speaks out against homosexuality directly. So, what then? Did Jesus make the wrong choice in choosing his disciple? I don't mean to be a dick about this stuff, but...the Bible has been carried through Western Civ. and given new meanings the whole way. Instead of just directly evaluating it, each generation of thought simply adopts it.
@zoinkings He obviously opposes a lot of things, but I guess we're picking and choosing based on who we want to bully. Also, say I have a friend who is super awesome, but recreationally uses heroin, but never around me. Does that mean that I think heroin should be a thing that everyone does? He has his own doctrines, but I'm not the one advocating them, and I don't support it just because he's my friend. Sure, dude picked his own friends. Doesn't mean that he advocates everything they say and do
It makes me happy that people can be religious and still able to call bullshit on it. With all the media coverage that the idiots get, it's easy to forget that they don't represent it :/
your videos are the only ones worth watching. I usually can't stand watching 8 minute videos...not even the make up tutorials.
