This episode is heartbreaking.GOod but sad.All the ex pupils of this teacher are dead, they were killed in war time.So sad!!This teacher is the only one left alive.
...all too easy to fall into the despair of utter uselessness and futility of life. How often I have wished for the spirit world to push back the veil between our world and theirs to at least show me that it hasn't all been for nothing...that everything will eventually be all right. My time in this world is indeed very short, but it would certainly give one comfort to know that at least someone benefited from the knowledge and wisdom I attempted to impart...but the world had better things to do.
neosoc According to the Wikipedia biography, he was initially a conscientious objector, but changed his position, and was commissioned into the RAF. His Lancaster (Was he the Pilot? Somebody help me here.) was shot down on August 31, 1944, and he spent the rest of the war in a German prison camp.
Donald Pleasance had a long and distinguished career. In "The Great Escape" he was the forger who went blind. Pleasance was in the British RAF, was shot down, and spent the rest of the war as a POW. I didn't learn that until I read his obituary. Great actor and perfect for the part.
The Twilight Zone could always be counted on to take heartless jerks down several notches but sometime could do the opposite. As in this case it could show a gentle person the true value of their own life. I don't know of anyone who could have played the old professor any better than Donald Pleasance. He was a terrific actor.
God, I love this series. It has driven stories, well rounded characters, and something that is sadly missing in most TV today: soul. Where are the Twilight Zones and Rod Sterlings today? I think we could use them now, more than ever.
This one is certainly one of my favorites. One of many things I like about it is the way in which it celebrates literature. The former students were able to lead better lives because of what they had read relating to honor, loyalty, caring for your fellow man (no man is an island), etc.
I love this episode, one of thre best !! Lots of memories for me ~ my last remaining uncle now 93 served at Peral Harbor Dec 7, 1941. My father served WWII, , now deceased, he became a physicist and served USAF for 30 years. He met Albert Einstein in the 1940s. My family has rich miltary service. The movie is awesome and moves me very deeeply and emotionally everytime I see it. All time favorite! Remember there is NO neutral influence we have on others. Semper Fidelis U.S.M.C. 1975 - 1981

My wife, is retiring after a 33 year teaching high school. She wonders if she made any difference. I recalled this play from my youth four decades ago. I shared this play with her. My wife now looks forward realizing the good she has done.
The actor: Donald Pleasence was commissioned into the Royal Air Force, in WWII His Avro Lancaster was shot down on 31 August 1944 during a raid. Taken prisoner and placed in a German prisoner-of-war camp, where he produced and acted in plays.
@jdh91741 Sometimes we don't even realize it but believe me there is always one special teacher in our lives that made a difference I am 45 and I remember one teacher I had that always brings a smile to my face I cannot tell you how to find the square root of 122 the captial of Boliva or who wrote to kill a mockingbird but I will always thank my history teacher before him no interest but 30 yrs later I can still remember all he taught of history during those classses!
@ohwell94 My name is James. I have a friend, now 75 years old. He taught political science at Notre Dame. Once he told me of a teacher he had in 5th grade who changed his life. It was in a Catholic school and she was a nun. This nun/teacher retired to a convent. My PhD friend said he sent her a little money every month to see her through. She recently died. He wept.
@jdh91741 yes when I heard my history teacher passed on I also cried I still remember always looking forward to those classes 30 yrs later he made it interesting and fun and I will always thank him in my heart for my love of history
