Did they ever filmed the original production? I had always thought that if they had a recording and a songbook filled with photographs of it, they would have it in film too, just like Les Miserables.
Haha. I first learned about this in 2004, when the movie came out, and then I saw it on Broadway, and from then I just HAD to see every single movie of it ever made, and I've read the book tons of times. I love the Phantom so much!!!!
A) better keep their hand at the level of their eyes, B) got a chandelier dropped on them, C)were burned by the heat of his eyes, D) strangled with a punjab lasso, E) fell into torture chamber, F) turned the scorpion, G) all of the above
i am 12 years old. i have been a huge Phan since i was 6. this is the first version i have heard, and this was my favorite song from it. i have seen many versions of phantom, but this is the only true one, to me.however, i will confess...i have never seen the stage version. i wish i could. i would be happy forever.
I was able to drop in at the show and first heard this song, the actors on stage at the Orpheum/San fran were in the gondola and I thought to myself, This is the most classiest show I have ever seen and I was right.. A true classic in itself, and I was lucky to have seen the show. Thanks for sharing this posting too!
The two who disliked it will probably be visited by the phantom... and he will be holding rope... Just sayin'. This is epically fantastic and one of the most played songs on my iPod.
i like this version a lot, but i think the movie christine (emmy rossum) has a better, clearer voice than sarah brightman and a more innocent look to her. but both are amazing of course :)
Beautiful. And one thing I love about this version: IT HAS THE FOURTH VERSE! I got a piano book with a bunch of Phantom of the Opera songs for my birthday last year, and it included the "In all your fantasies" verse, which I had never heard before. I think it's a cool verse...
@lilsisasu Well, there was one other version that only had the first and third verse...I forget what the version was called though. But I think it was the techno...
@thephantom1946 I know it's written for tenor, but I'm going to be honest: It doesn't fit. At least, not as well as a powerful baritone. I just can't find a lot of recordings of one singing his role. If there were -none-, that would be understandable, but there are just enough bad ones to let me know that people -do- it.
@michellekwan483 Can't forget Miss Saigon now can we :D Also I'd like to thank you for referring to them as musicals, NOT plays as about 90% of commenters on youtube call them.
while Sarah & Michael were all in the Original Broadway cast the recording this is from is the Original London Cast. (the only other english cast recording I am aware of is the Canadian cast highlights album)
@disneydanny2 Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford are the original London cast. Andrew wrote "Phantom of The Opera" for Sarah, she's the original Christine and Michael is the original Phantom.
@disneydanny2 It's them singing. They were in the original POTO in London and they're the ones who carried it over here to Broadway. Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote the role of Christine specifically for his wife, Sarah, & he chose Michael because he had overhead him singing (Michael had the same singing teacher that Sarah did).

I so agree with you!!!! the movie didnt capture what the musical brought..the actors had poor chemistry ...the emotional element in the musical was more intense!
she kind of scooped on that last note, but at least she hit it. I am in love with high notes. High five 1st sopranos!!!!! if anyone wants to hear some super high notes, look up the queen of the night aria by mozart!
ugh I cant belive nobody has comented on this yet . omg i love this version of this song. it may be old but it is by far the Best : D. Thank you for posting this up : ) Great pictures 5 *****
@russianpartychick rather have it up, people watch and appreciate it than various people comment and leave idiotic comments. I just got back in MD from seeing it at the Majestic in NYC earlier today. Please tell me you've seen it in person at the Majestic on 44th st. in NYC. You MUST make the trip and see it.
I love the show and would like to see it again !!

just a small correction, the title is wrong. There is no OBC of POTO. This would be the OLC made in 1986.

Why is it so difficult to find lower baritones singing The Phantom rather than tenors? D:
Sedraen 7 months ago
@Sedraen It's not hard to find a baritone at all. The part of the Phantom is written for a tenor.
thephantom1946 4 months ago

@Sedraen couldnt agree more. a crazy good baritone could play the phantom so much better (in my opinion)
