The saber was used for slashing, not fencing. It was heavier. You can't match the speed of a rapier. Use its weight and *attack*! Don't run in blindly, but *force* that person back and kill 'em!
@linkg13 My only point was that, in fighting with a heavier blade (i.e. saber vs foil), you can't compete with the foil's speed, so you've got to try something different. In terms of grammar, I've always used fencing as a word describing bouts between foils (as opposed to say, longswords, etc), though I'm well aware of its actual usage. Fencing sounds wimpy, and I think of the Musketeers every time I hear it. I guess I mean it to mean thrusting and parrying, as opposed to hacking and slashing.
That was pretty crappy. Neither combatant threw blows with the intent to kill. it was all just flailing. Saber guy should have gotten within her guard, pinned the wrist/ hand and slashed.
Both fencers have poor footwork, the guy puts too much weight on his back leg, front knee should be bent a little bit more, the girl totally loses control and confuses step order. Train it, it's VERY important.
@Maergensargoth It could be because she is trying to fence "foil" with a kendo stick?( can't remember the name) It seems to be throwing her off balance.
make a block and side step at the same time,(so that your weapon ends up on top of thers) then pass the sabre or foil over top of ther weapon and into the soft meat of the body.
@StephenYamato If it's jammed in there hard enough, they will lose an eye, blunt or no. Baseball players have lost eyes to baseballs that didn't penetrate, but still delivered plenty of shock trauma to the worst possible place.
The fact that they're using shinai really restricts what they're able to do. The girl's ability is more apparent in her form and movement. Can't tell if the guy has any ability whatsoever because the shinai is FAR too heavy to be used for sabre techniques. On top of that, he's limited to a few moves because the fact that they're not wearing protective gear means it's far too easy to hurt his opponent.
Basically, this is in no way an accurate representation of either fencer's abilities.
@link000000 She is pretty good. My only complain is the saber fighter wasn't quite offensive enough, but I understand his reasoning. She's also a lefty, whereas he is not. That could really complicate things.
Using a kendo as a foil is pretty damn hard. So imagine if she was actually using a foil. Plus she has amazing footwork despite the fact that she had the clear(?) disadvantage. Pretty amazing.
The guy in the yellow shirt is holding the thing in a manner completely incompatible with having any sort of control over the blade. A proper grip looks more like shaking hands.
I really like this video, but any competent saber fencer would beat a fencer trained only in foil fencing. No comparison, the foil is faster, but you can only aim for the torso and back, there's no way in foil fencing of blocking a head shot or arm shot, and if you include these positions into foil fencing, it becomes sabre.

@SamThaishot well that is not at all true, i am a quite skilled fencer and i know that if u have done it for long enough there is a defence position for every sichuation, she is only using 4 and 6 guard
@jayman448 As i say above in reply to another person, i am one of the top FOIL fencer's in my age group in my country, and i am therefor of a high level. I do not however believe that either of us is necessarily wrong, and so i wonder if perhaps the rules are different where you do fencing... I have fought against a SABER fighter, - and lost. In fencing where i come from, there are no positions to block either a head shot, or an arm shot, though the latter could be easily evaded.
@SamThaishot ok, but if you guard higher than usual, should you be able to block it relitively easily? it would feel weird, but then you could use the lower guards(like seven and eight) to protect the rest of your body: just a thought, in theory it would seem to work.....
@jayman448 not sure exactly what you are trying to say... i call the guards by words, not numbers, but i think that ( if those are the positions i think they are) it would indeed work in theory, but in practice, the blow would be defended so far down the blade, that the strength of the blow would, unless you had an exceptionnally strong wrist, move the blade and therefore making the block effectless... do you now if these guards are the same as prime and seconde?
@SamThaishot ok so i did a little research and your prime and second is my 6 and 4, if you guard in "prime and seconde" higher than usual, it should work, then the rest of the body is covered by septime and octaive
Also, if the saber fencer were only allowed to attack the torso and back (same areas as the foil fencer), then i would agree with you that the saber fencer would not necessarily win as their advantage would be head and arm shots :)
@SamThaishot I am wondering too where you got those informations. I learned Sword and Sabre myself, but my Dad would have left me bleeding to death on the battle field (former foil fencing youth master). The only chance would have been to overcome the blade (quicker but a lot weaker), not the fencer.
I don't know where you learn fencing, but i am actually one of the top foil fencers in my age group in my country, and i have fenced against another fencer, who was fencing with a saber. Admitedly, the foil is fast enough to get through the saber's guard, but as long as the fencer with the saber moved into the "attack" position (and therefore has priority) if he attacks to the head, the foil fencer's only option, is to adopt a saber position or retreat.
@SamThaishot I haven't fought for about 20 years now and the only thing I remember was, that the foil is too fast, when used by a quick fencer. @SamThaishot Oh I forgot the flèche, because it's not allowed to use this attack with the sabre. The foil fencer however is allowed to use it, and it's a real pain in the butt.
@Andarion666 Saber can still do a fleche-ish move (flunge). It's quite funny. The epeeists at my club fleche so much. I used to fleche a ton last year but now I do more redoublements and counterattacks. I should fleche more.
@xenadon The problem is that it's forbidden to cross your legs, that makes the flunge a lot slower and reduces the achievable distance. But the flunge is pretty useful too and it's good that you mentioned it, I totally forgot about that.
@Andarion666 I know. I've found that the distance for the flunge is a lot shorter than that for a fleche in epee or foil. Sometimes I even flunge from closer than where I would lunge from.
@xenadon All this talking about fencing made me curious and enthusiastic again. I already visited the club we used to train at when I was young. I don't have much time atm, but I will start fencing again. I totally forgot how much fun it was. That proves it, work always gets the best of us.
I am training at a fencing and tennis club (don't ask how this started, lol) in Germany. It's a kind of voluntary association, not a traditional academy. That's quite common among sports in europe (the system is a little different from the system in the States).
I really like this video, but any competent saber fencer would beat a fencer trained only in foil fencing. No comparison, the foil is faster, but you can only aim for the torso and back, there's no way in foil fencing of blocking a head shot or arm shot, and if you include these positions into foil fencing, it becomes sabre.
are they from the US ? They look so poor nerds, of course they are ...!! D
are many stupid comments full of silly statements and pathetic idiocies on here coming from american or wasp dumbs ? They are so typically clueless as usual when it comes to subjects or sports , of course they come .....!! DD
Why dont they stop making fools of themselves by not spelling even one funny bs of theirs anymore and by getting back to their fucked national trash sports ??
These kids should be wearing protection, at least for their faces: stupid
Kids:: if you are going to show anything to world, do it properly by starting with the basics since masks, cuirasses and armours are as important to fencing as the weapons themselves.
By the way: this is not European fencing since the sabre grip can't allow for sword juggling as he does in 0:06, he is used to handle katanas or bokens; the girl doesn't move like an epée fencer: long steps, no tip exploring, rigid stand
um im pretty sure those are both shinais, unless one of them is a wooden fencing sword. and yes i know that shinais can be used for fencing too but i mean European fencing.
wow the girl really hold her own considering shes at a heavy disadvantage not being able to use a rapier im supprised she was still able to have that speed its impressive
second a parry is basically the defensive moves in fencing. most people refer to them as numbers. they are classified based on direction of blade in relation to hand facing up or down, position of blade to fencing line inside or outside, as well as the rotation of the wrist of the hand holding the weapon
@DuelingFireDemon haha, I was trying to be sarcastic (but retrospectively that didn't really come through in my comment!). Awesome description though! :D
This looks like a lot of fun. You would think it is not that tiring, but what a great workout! You end up sweating pretty good after a few rounds. The sport should become more popular...
those were the weakest attacks ive every seen. YOU ATTACK THE PERSON NOT THE SWORD. unless your attacking the sword to get it out of the way to attack the person.
Am I the only one who noticed the guy who was being "trained in saber fencing" did not make one move consistent with saber? He held his weapon as you would a saber, but beyond that, only made a few straight thrusts. this should be relabeled: "Bad amateur foil bout without eye protection"
I understand that your friends are only having fun, but please wear some sort of eye protection. No i`m not a health and safety spoil sport, but we are born with only one pair of eyes. I have been fencing for 22 years, and thankfully accidents are few and far between, but one wrong move could leave one of your friends blinded for life. As I previously said, I applaud the fact that you are getting off your backsides and having a go, and not being couch potatoes. Keep it up.
Why is the girl using a Foil? The Foil is a modern competition weapon, and has
no historical lineage. She should be using an Epee, which is based on a generic Rapier. Other than that it`s good to see some people getting up and having a go, lots more practice needed to make a good comparison between the two different weapon styles. As alistercane says, it`ll be good to see how you turn out.
@733835 Neither of them are using fencing weapons. It sounds like they're both using kendo shinai, which is pretty lame. Nerf swords would probably work better and are about the same amount of money as a shinai. Leave the kendo weapons to those who do kendo.
@xenadon What are you blabbing on about!? The person in the yellow top is trying to fight in a saber style, while the person on the right is using a foil style, and the video is posted as `saber vs foil (sword fight), the clue is in the name. Where did I mention cost!? What has it got to do with kendo!?
You realy should read, peoples comments properly before replying with totally irrelevant statements.
I said it sounded like they were using kendo weapons. They are definitely not using fencing weapons. I suggested an alternative to kendo weapons (if they are indeed using them) because it's kind of impolite to use kendo weapons outside of kendo
My statement isn't irrelevant, you should read it more carefully.
By the way, both of them aren't very good. The beginner I understand, but the "foil" fencer really doesn't make any real attacks. Work on footwork, form, everything.
another thing the guy seemed too springy with his movement. And you guys are only supposed to move back and forth not circle around, another thing that'll screw you over in a structured bout. Also the guy's front leg is too straight not to be a bitch but just saying
as a fencer trying to use random items to fence with do not work. Because once your arm gets used to that weight when you use something lighter the person would not be able to control the weapon. Also everyone ASSUMES they can just grab the foil or saber, I tried it my friend did a circle parry 3 then bitchslapped my hand left a bruise for 2 weeks. People don't realize there is a whole lot more to fencing than just taking an item and wavy it around it takes speed, agility, endurance, accuracy
fossegrimen13 - "I would just take the foil away from that dumb bitch when she attempted a stab and finish her off."
You must not have that much experience in sword play because any fighter worth a fight wouldn't just let you grab it. If you were to attempt that trick against a real fencer, they would whip the back of your hand for being stupid. Grabbing a foil=Epic Fail. Sorry man but you opened the door...
fossegrimen13, Its obvious youve never fought against somone with a foil/epee/rapier.1st off the fighting style isnt prone to haveing the blade grabed.2nd there isnt alot of surface area to grab on to,so the odds of you pulling it out of somones hand regardless of who its is would be slim.3rd of all there are still accidental deaths in the sport from foils.4th a foil CAN parry a larger blade, i have done it., any idiot can swing around a longsword
Calm down, calm down. First, a grab would be possible if one was to move very quickly into the opponent. Second, any idiot can poke around with a foil. An idiot, however, will find mastering either weapon hard. George Silver, an English fencer, circa 17th century, said the following:
I have known a gentleman hurt in rapier fight, in nine or ten places through the body, arms, and legs, and yet has continued in his fight, & afterward has slain the other...
Sorry if i offended you, and i didnt mean to say londsword isnt as good (I actually started out with longsword) I was iritated that some one would say somthing like that about sombody who at least went out and tried to learn. Not to mention assume that they would win because there opponent is female. The idot i was refering to was the guy who made the comment.
I would just take the foil away from that dumb bitch when she attempted a stab and finish her off.
A foil is only useful against another foil in a rule-regulated fencing match. It has no cutting edge which means anyone with the strength and reflexes could rip it out of a womans hands and beat her to death with it, not to mention it would snap like a swig from a hard parry by any other blade. Foil = completely useless in a real duel.
fencing is realy fast .. kendo is just for sometin i dont know. . but i still like kendo.. i wana learn kendo. but fencing realy is the insane.. i cant seems to handle the saber.. so i only study is kendo.. since im so adicted in two handed swords xD .. btw i play pc games allot xD hehhe
Well, better is always debatable but I would recommend you trying out German Longsword, in the style of Liechtenauer. You can go in any direction from there.
what about one that is probably as lighter or light enough to use..... like say yakuza uses katanas.... maybe some type of gangster could use a long sword or a ......................sword cane????
Sorry but you don't get fencing. I'm 11 and I could take you both on.
Keep practicing. :D

McHaven07 6 months ago
@McHaven07 Fencing is the sport.
Saber is one style involving cutting* which derived from the saber/cutlass.
Foil is another style involving stabbing which derived from the short sword.
Epee is ANOTHER style involving stabbing which is closest to rapier combat.
Saber is fencing, so is foil and so is epee

I am training at a fencing and tennis club (don't ask how this started, lol) in Germany. It's a kind of voluntary association, not a traditional academy. That's quite common among sports in europe (the system is a little different from the system in the States).
Andarion666 9 months ago
I really like this video, but any competent saber fencer would beat a fencer trained only in foil fencing. No comparison, the foil is faster, but you can only aim for the torso and back, there's no way in foil fencing of blocking a head shot or arm shot, and if you include these positions into foil fencing, it becomes sabre.

are many stupid comments full of silly statements and pathetic idiocies on here coming from american or wasp dumbs ?

Protective mask is highly recommended for this sport. No one wants to see one fighter accidently pokes the other's eyeball out.

What the fuck are perrys?
AusQuitzau 1 year ago
@AusQuitzau first off: spelled parry.
second a parry is basically the defensive moves in fencing. most people refer to them as numbers. they are classified based on direction of blade in relation to hand facing up or down, position of blade to fencing line inside or outside, as well as the rotation of the wrist of the hand holding the weapon

Keep it up.
733835 1 year ago
Why is the girl using a Foil? The Foil is a modern competition weapon, and has
no historical lineage. She should be using an Epee, which is based on a generic Rapier. Other than that it`s good to see some people getting up and having a go, lots more practice needed to make a good comparison between the two different weapon styles. As alistercane says, it`ll be good to see how you turn out.
733835 1 year ago
@733835 Neither of them are using fencing weapons. It sounds like they're both using kendo shinai, which is pretty lame. Nerf swords would probably work better and are about the same amount of money as a shinai. Leave the kendo weapons to those who do kendo.
xenadon 1 year ago
@xenadon What are you blabbing on about!? The person in the yellow top is trying to fight in a saber style, while the person on the right is using a foil style, and the video is posted as `saber vs foil (sword fight), the clue is in the name. Where did I mention cost!? What has it got to do with kendo!?
You realy should read, peoples comments properly before replying with totally irrelevant statements.
733835 1 year ago
@733835 Ok, slower..
Work on footwork, form, everything.
xenadon 1 year ago
another thing the guy seemed too springy with his movement. And you guys are only supposed to move back and forth not circle around, another thing that'll screw you over in a structured bout. Also the guy's front leg is too straight not to be a bitch but just saying
lovefordante 1 year ago
as a fencer trying to use random items to fence with do not work. Because once your arm gets used to that weight when you use something lighter the person would not be able to control the weapon. Also everyone ASSUMES they can just grab the foil or saber, I tried it my friend did a circle parry 3 then bitchslapped my hand left a bruise for 2 weeks. People don't realize there is a whole lot more to fencing than just taking an item and wavy it around it takes speed, agility, endurance, accuracy
lovefordante 1 year ago
@lovefordante True,, to a point, if we take Miyamoto Musashi's Duel with Sasaki Kojirō in to consideration.. =),, but sure, he was one of a kind.
"The duel was short. Musashi killed his opponent with a bokken that he had carved from an oar while traveling to the island." (wikipedia)

fossegrimen13 - "I would just take the foil away from that dumb bitch when she attempted a stab and finish her off."
You must not have that much experience in sword play because any fighter worth a fight wouldn't just let you grab it. If you were to attempt that trick against a real fencer, they would whip the back of your hand for being stupid. Grabbing a foil=Epic Fail. Sorry man but you opened the door...
ganizaki 1 year ago
fossegrimen13, Its obvious youve never fought against somone with a foil/epee/rapier.1st off the fighting style isnt prone to haveing the blade grabed.2nd there isnt alot of surface area to grab on to,so the odds of you pulling it out of somones hand regardless of who its is would be slim.3rd of all there are still accidental deaths in the sport from foils.4th a foil CAN parry a larger blade, i have done it., any idiot can swing around a longsword
ACDoubleEdge 1 year ago
Calm down, calm down. First, a grab would be possible if one was to move very quickly into the opponent. Second, any idiot can poke around with a foil. An idiot, however, will find mastering either weapon hard. George Silver, an English fencer, circa 17th century, said the following:
I have known a gentleman hurt in rapier fight, in nine or ten places through the body, arms, and legs, and yet has continued in his fight, & afterward has slain the other...
Just putting that out there...

wonder who would win in a three way fight : foil vs saber vs katana LOL sorry if u think this is gay ^^
copypacercopypacer 1 year ago
Sorry if i offended you, and i didnt mean to say londsword isnt as good (I actually started out with longsword) I was iritated that some one would say somthing like that about sombody who at least went out and tried to learn. Not to mention assume that they would win because there opponent is female. The idot i was refering to was the guy who made the comment.
ACDoubleEdge 1 year ago
I would just take the foil away from that dumb bitch when she attempted a stab and finish her off.
A foil is only useful against another foil in a rule-regulated fencing match. It has no cutting edge which means anyone with the strength and reflexes could rip it out of a womans hands and beat her to death with it, not to mention it would snap like a swig from a hard parry by any other blade. Foil = completely useless in a real duel.

Well, better is always debatable but I would recommend you trying out German Longsword, in the style of Liechtenauer. You can go in any direction from there.
Good luck!
LordofDonuts1 1 year ago
what about one that is probably as lighter or light enough to use..... like say yakuza uses katanas.... maybe some type of gangster could use a long sword or a ......................sword cane????
