i agree that trying to determine the avenues of social change in advance is a sort of scientism... seems we are still trying to adapt to the rapid changes in population and social intensification and have no idea how to harness it, we've gotten caught up in a destructive and predatory system that is killing us. i am just going to try to create small systems that work, so people can imitate them if they are keen...
Usually Malcolm Gladwell uses this kind of BS topic as a licence to talk about whatever he happens to be interested in at the time, which is usually pretty interesting, but I guess he had nothing interesting to say that day.
Kingwell mentioned that there's been a lot of hand waving for social change, and that they have to actually identify the levers, and what needs to be done for real concrete change, and then...
Nothing.
Are ideas important? Is education? Only these block-heads can make these controversial issues.
I'm sorry there have been a lot of negative comments. They're deserved. This is a rehearsal of old arguments... at best!
I guess change in general will never happen when the majority of people don´t get what the hell you are talking about. Be specific, point out the pros and cons of a given issue and place people as factors of the problem and let them decide what they think of the result in question.

The CBC is the worst thing to happen to itself; mostly it loves to stay stuck in 1969..

I find it hilarious that Galdwell mentioned Einstein in that they both have the same hairdo. Not that that's a bad thing.
