The Batman serial was a collection of familiar B actors: Robert Lowery, Lyle Talbot, William Fawcett, and Jane Adams. Shot on the proverbial shoestring budget, the serial proved to be a winner at the Saturday afternoon box office. Say what you will about the acting, but the cast was playing to a juvenile audience who knew what they wanted in terms of entertainment.
The 1949 serials are more realistic than the Adam West TV series. The one thing I enjoyed about these serials is the mystery surrounding the Wizard. Lots of great action and suspense in this one. I grew up watching these serials on VHS tapes. Now I have it on the 2-disc DVD set.
I agree: the Adam West series and film follow a similiar format used in the '43 and '49 serials, but much campier and the deliberate use of BANG! POOM! KAPOW! and so on. Every odd-even episode ends in a cliffhanger reminiscent of this one!
This 1949 version is so stiff and mechanical compared to the 1943 serial. The 1943 serial is far better. And as for being better than the Chris Nolan film, you need to take a second look. The Dark Knight is easily the best film of 2008.
You should see th 1943 original. Sure, it is also famous for its anti-Japanese content, but overall that one was great. Tight in budget-- tighter than this one-- but big in imagination.
Also, the Batmobile as we know it, does not appear until the 1950s.
Seeing the Batman serials of the 1940s, it is plain to see where the 60's show got its inspiration from. At first, I thought I was actually watching the 60's show but in black and white, espeically the 1943 serial, but after awhile I noticed something is different.
Anyway, thanks... I'd like to see the 1943 original posted... the DVD is a LUXURY... you can't find it ANYWHERE... believe me, I've tried
They were too cheap to build one. When you consider that all they had to do was make a few batwing fins and a head out of wood and bolt them onto an existing black sedan, it really makes you wonder. Kids probably yelled "Hey, run the plates and see if it doesn't come back as Bruce Wayne's car!"
This (in my opinion) is actually more enjoyable than the 1966 show. The humour in the 60s show got really irritating at times. This one was just pure sheer, unintentionally cheesy brilliance. Batman and Robin are pretty solid as well. They're a lot less obnoxious and over the top.

I like how Bruce just pulls the costume out of a dresser and then drives away in a regular sedan. Wow, this show had no budget.

nah.. they had budget... this was state of the art excitement at the time.
