democracy is socialist, roads are socialist, the NHS is socialist, the police are socialist, firemen are socialist, health and safety is socialist, council homes are socialist, child benefit is socialist, pensions are socialist, unemployment benefit is socialist, free education is socialist and any other policy that gives free assistance to anyone when they need it and not if they can afford it is, yes you guessed it socialist
@19STU84 Yes....which is why my wrist deformity wasn't picked up on before irreversible damage was caused, why my dad's secondary cancer wasn't found until he was months from death and why my sister was told there was nothing wrong with her - despite the fact she has permanent migraines, is short of breath and constantly passes out - until after being stuck in the system for well over 6 months they diagnose her with a hole in the heart. Yes, the NHS works......if you bypass it that is!
@emma41093 Well obviously I can't defend that but with 60 million potential patients the NHS will inevitably get things wrong from time to time. On the whole though I must say that the NHS is a force for good. The majority of people who use it do have a good experience of care.
@19STU84 You don't need to defend it :) We need the NHS or else the private sector would collapse :) By the way, just to clarify, I wasn't intending to attack your views or anything - I'm just a little fed up with the NHS at the moment.
I came into UK in 2004 from former socialist country. While communists were in power, our news were censored and therefore we could not get too much information officially, listening to free radios like BBC, Free Europe and Voice of America gave me at least some information about the free world. I know that envy is bad emotion, bud man, how I envied you your Maggie...
Anyway, I love your channel, became subscriber at once and I see I'll have a lot of hours to spend over here :-).
@BulkyWebEU socialism isn't communism dummy and there is massive difference between democratic socialism and the single party system of the eastern bloc based of off stalinism
I'm not religious, but this somehow reminds me of one of Jesus' Parables (Matthew 12:43-44):
"When the unclean spirit has gone, he passes through waterless places seeking rest, but he finds none. Then he says, `I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes he finds it empty, swept, and put in order."
i.e. Thatcher swept the country clean of Socialism in the 80's, only for it to return to a nice clean house under Blair/Brown & ruin the country once again...
@tdp1909 How on earth do you come to the conclusion that Blair / Brown were returning to socialism? They simply carried on the Tories policy of privatising state industry, that rather flies in the face of a fundamental principle of socialism - state ownership of production.
@somename99 Depends how you define socialism, I spose. However I doubt Blair/ Brown would refuse the tag of 'socialist' & I think one of socialism's trademarks is increasing the size of the state, whether by Nationalisation or bureaucracy...
@tdp1909 Only if you define socialism incorrectly, under socialism the means of production is either under state ownership or common ownership (co-operatives). Not my definition but Marx, Engels,Owen, etc...
The fact something may have a characteristic of socialism does not make it socialism, in the same way you sharing the characteristic of having eyes with a tortoise, does not make you a tortoise.
@somename99 True, but I think it's quite a broad definition. The one off Wikipedia reads "Socialism is an economic and political theory advocating public or common ownership and cooperative management of the means of production and allocation of resources." Just cos a state is party does not favour the 100% nationalisation of the economy, doesn't make it not socialist.
I think Thatcher herself ran into this particular problem when someone pointed out that the USSR was not a socialist state...
@tdp1909 I agree a government does not have to have 100% of industry nationalized to be considered socialist, however a party that re-nationalizes absolutely nothing after an era of huge privatisation, then finishes the privatisation for the railways then goes on to privatise DERA, Direct inquires, the London Underground, parts of the NHS, NATS, etc is the absolute opposite to socialist, it is capitalist, nothing else.
@somename99 Come to think of it, I find myself agreeing with you & I spose Thatcher really did sweep Britain clean of socialism.
Still, Labour has left us with a State sector that accounts for 51% of the economy, when a place like Communist China is only 26% (or so).
Though I think true socialism has gone (as per the documentary 'Heaven on Earth: The rise & fall of socialism'), Big state politics is still with us...
@tdp1909 Oddly enough I could not remember which Gospel this passage was from and had been wondering about it for a while. I do believe it's a commentary, the verses, on human psychology in any field- politics receives no exemption!

The soviet union, nor the so-called eastern bloc was ever socialist, just some warped Stalinist idealism.
