2 options in this case:

A) ( time sensitive) Initiate a full stall, on recovery the cravat would likely be gone (he had this option till about 0:50 )

B) Grab the outer-most lines, reel them in, then release.

In either case he should have flown away from the ridge as the wing was still about 60-70% inflated and he could have landed without pushing sticks and branches through his wing.

At least he didn't get hurt... :-)

What happened?? He never seemed in control of anything after the original loops and where was the reserve? Cfit.. Controlled flight into terrain, just calmly flew into trees...

It looked like he had a cravat after the loop collapse and couldn't get it out. He only had enough control to keep it straight with some right brake. If he tried any more it would go out of control again. You can see him try to use his stabilo to clear it and totally lose control. He's fighting to clear it from the moment he gets a collapse in the loops.

I'm not so sure about this. He had a small cravat, so what. Rather than concentrate on flying his wing to clearing, he spent all his time trying to clear the snag, and he ended up in the trees.

Why would a motor help?

A paraglider with a source of thrust (motor) would allow this pilot to fly even in zero wind conditions, which is common at sunset. It's personal flight with very little risk, unless the pilot does dangerous maneuvers.  The form of flight shown here is necessarily dangerous.
