The companions asked how these two contradictory statement could be true.

What a waste of time - all those millions of people sending up prayers to no-one. At least, no-one tat listens. Rather than prostrating yourselves to the imagined supernatural, why don't you get down your local community centre and volunteer to do some charity work? Your imagined god doesn't care about you praying - why would he? He's all powerful right? All powerful and he chooses to ignore every one of you. Such a dreadful waste of time :(
