I don't like to hear the wonderful Joseph Schmidt... While I hear his delicious voice, I can't help thinking to his horrible death, and that makes me so sad. Even if Hitler was to blame for only Joseph Schmidt's death, it would have been enough to be a monster...
But I didn't say "the germans" were responsible... I said Hitler... Because of course, the first cause of Joseph Schmidt's tragic death is obviously the nazi antisemitism, from which he was trying to escape when he was arrested by the swiss...
But you're right in a way, Switzerland is definitively partner in the crime... Yes, shame on Switzerland, as well...
@GermanOperaSinger : don't tell such a incredible bullshit. Nobody killed him. He was sick and the responsible swiss did not make sure having him see a doctor, what was of course unforgiveable and sad.
no kiepura was not as good as far as tech. as either tauber or schmidt and by the way Kiepura for your information was half Jewish, his mother was 100% Jewish so he may have been killed. He did have a wonderful voice though. Tauber was great in Mozart and operetta and also half Jewish but got to England and safety.
Kiepura had a wonderful voice but he did not out do either one in technique in fact Schmidt has the best la donna e mobile live recording of anyone for the cadenza and Tauber in Mozart was very fine, better then Kiepura and by the way Kiepura was like Tauber half Jewish, his mother was. Tauber had to leave Germany, they would have got him. Schmidt was not as lucky he wound up in an internment camp. (in Swiss) Died at age 38.
If you have his recording of the "other" aria (von Appfelbluten...), could you please post. That was the recording that first introduced me to this wonderful tenor (a number of years ago).

@oskarbider99 He was sick and the Swiss denied him treatment. So yes - indirectly, they killed him.

One of greatest tenors ever. Top ten for sure. His empathy is in the same order as Enrico Caruso,

What a wonderful voice this man possessed and how effortlessly he used it to perfection!
I just hope he got ample praise in the short span of time he was allotted.
Rest in peace, Joseph Schmidt, we will love you forever!

It is most interesting that there is Tauber and Schmidt
of that period but for some very odd reason one who
was as good if not better than either is left out , can there be a bias there -? try Kiepura -though not German a
great german star -who outdoes both in technique and
beauty of sound . He would be one of my 100 .

The live of Joseph Schmidt was a sad drama, but as I've heard, he was never in Auschwitz.
