I find it hard to believe that one man thought of all this and got all the 10,000 part of it working right, in a time before electronic computers where made, even better was the fact he fix a mechanical clock at thirteen years old and it all mechanical too. and it went around the world on top of that . I wish I could be as smart as he was .
Do you know anyone interested in buying a machine. I have a model 31. I believe it was built in the 1930's. I may be wrong. I have pictures if you would like to see. I am in St. Louis, MO.
I also worked one of these. My first year apprenticeship was the last year the newspapers used them. They used to cause quite a mess if the magazines were lifted off before locking them - matrix everywhere!
I was lucky enough to have run one in trade School in the 70's! Did everything from making the pigs to making the machine "squirt" (bad justified line of type that would allow the machine to send molten metal into the air!)
Wow!

Each Time An Original Invention Necessitates Serious Hellbox Risks, Don't Leave Unattended (this sentence was written for linotype geeks).

Man and machine: there's a lot of love there and it shows!

Thanks Man- I grew up with these. We had several model 6 linotypes and a couple of the larger 'headline' machines as well.

The Linotype is such an amazing machine, and George tells its story so well!
