PCs are used for automation and control, and they do have the ability to do tasks that PLCs aren't designed to do, but PLC technology is and has constantly being enhanced and made more reliable. If you check, you will see that programmable automation controllers are becoming more available. PACs combine the best features of PLCs, such as ruggedness, with the best features of PCs, data handling. There is need for all three technologies. A simple application done with a $69 PLC beats using a PC.
