@TheWhitehall: As I posted on another thread: it's too bad that Sir Walt didn't give the Lofty & "Rosy" forward pairing a bit longer of a run in the England side IMHO. It's also a bloody shame that neither of them were in the the squad for the '58 WC as well.
Yes, I concur. Especially with the tragic loss of Tommy Taylor on 6th Feb. Both Lofthouse and Atyeo in my opinion were better and more formidable than Derek Kevan who made the ` 58 Squad. I saw JA play at Selhurst Park in the mid 60`s, he was still more than a handful for the Palace defenders.
@TheWhitehall: Can you imagine the goal tally that TT would've run up for England had the '58 Munich air crash never happened? Kevan was an effective #9, but I agree w/you that Lofty & "Rosy" were far better in the pos. & for England as well. Ayteo definitely knew his way around the attack, that's for damn sure.
Absolutely. Taylor, I am sure would have enjoyed an outstanding World Cup. With Haynes,Finney, Edwards and Pegg providing him with the passes...not forgetting Robson and Douglas. Was Alick Jeffrey on the scene at this time? I know he suffered a badly broken leg, from which he never fully recovered....similar to that of Cloughie.
@BS15RED: I'm around the same age as your dad and I saw Edwards play several times for both Utd. & Eng. It's probably best if I PM you my take on the question since people can often get daft when talking about "Boom-Boom" for some reason or the other.
It`s of great regret that I never saw DC play. Apart from seeing film footage of him in action. He looks magnificent. However, I know two people who did see the" Babes" play. Both confirmed that Edwards was "Very Special". He just stood out on and off the ball. Tommy Taylor and Roger Byrne also highly rated.
Legend, strange but pleasing to see how England are pushing through the middle so fluently. This is a surprise to me, I have to say. Two points: Finney's goal was top class... secondly, how wonderful the white shirts are / easy to the eye in such winterish footage. Thanks friend, and thanks to the uploader.
Yeah, it gives u a whole new respect for the England side of that era, doesn't it? The Plumber always seemed to make something happen, didn't he? U r quite welcome, mate, & thanx again to BS15 4 the TOP-CLASS upload.
@G1S1W: Edwards isn't in this because Jimmy Dickinson was playing @ left-half & the AW-H role was being filled by Blackburn great Ronnie Clayton @ right-half. Edwards would be back @ left-half v. yer lot @ Hampden Pk. in April of '56 where he and Johnny Haynes formed the de facto CM duo.
In this match Lofty & "Rosy" were playing in what was then called the twin-forward formation that Winterbottom "borrowed" fr. the Magic Magyars. & we still had the likes of Roy Bentley, Jackie Milburn, Tommy Taylor, etc., in the queue for a place @ fwd. in the starting XI. What depth the England squad had back in them days!!
...and spain still havent scored...

John Atyeo become a supply teacher at my school - Matravers in Wiltshire - in the early 1990s. What an absolute legend! A lovely man.

Happy Days for England. Two Dreadnought Class front men in Atyeo and Lofthouse. Finney and Haynes class acts.

I actually saw this match @ Wembley back in '55. The crowd was so angry when Lofty's goal was called back 4 offside!
