I am now raising my 2nd akita pup after losing my first akita to cancer, and I truly believe most akita attacks could easily be prevented with proper training, socialization and proper fencing. Karmic, I'm glad you weren't seriously injured. The akita's owners should have done a better job at supervising their dog. None of our dogs (I've owned other breeds than akitas too) have ever been allowed out in the yard unsupervised. Responsible dog ownership prevents accidents - period.
I wanted an Akita but settled for a Shiba Inu. I love her so much, such an unusual character but an amazing dog. I'm starting puppy classes with her soon because I know both Shibas and Akitas need to be socialized young. Oh and I cried at the end of the Hachiko movie -3
My akitas were and are very loving dogs. Best dogs I ever had but they are so protective of their families that you have to socialize them as puppies to be around lots of other people kids and animals. My Kyra kept trying to breastfeed my cats kittens and would watch them and scoot them back by their bed area. My bandit was very protective of my kids and myself he did not care for most men but loved children. They have to be raised correctly like a rot or pit does.
My akita loves other dogs and people, she's never shown an ounce of agression. This is probably due to us taking her to the dog park and to meet lots of people, but i think it's also just her personality.
Yes, Akita's can be aggressive like so many dogs. This breed needs alot of attension and time spent with. You can't just put it in the yard for the day and call it in at night. I spend alot of time with my girl and walk her before work and when I get home everyday, you have too. If you treat your Akita as your best friend you will not have problems. Like they say in the video, Akita's are not for everyone. This breed is almost human except it's more trustworthy and loyal than humans!!!!
Always remember this, Akita's and other so called aggresssive dogs can be taught to be a great & friendly dog. It takes alot of work and Akitas need alot of attention. People who get these dogs need to reseach the dog ahead of time. I know their are bad Akitas because it's not brought up right. All breeds will act up or be aggressive if ignored and not payed attention to! Akitas more than others but as I said. Two Akitas in 20 years without problems or incidents proves my point! Be his friend!
@redhead5150 you obviously dont know what your talking about because the Akita is well known for dominance and aggression!!,please go do your research before you post crap, had akitas passed down from gt gt gran parents and aggression is very very common.
It's the owner who is 110% responsible period. Ask any trainer. Yes, some breeds are more aggresive, but it's the owner who is responsible in the end. You're the one that needs to do some serious research before posting. My fam has had GS, Akitas, Dobies, and Rotties. Not a single one ever bit anyone or was an aggresive dog, two of them ended up being therapy dogs.
My Akita is the most loyal dog ever. He waits for me in the garden when I go out with my friends he doesn't care if it's snowing or raining... I am quiet a scared person of the rapers and all that stuff (there are quiet a lot in my neighbourhood) but with Biscuit I feel safe! Not that he attacks without teasing, but ppl give space when they see me walking a bear-like dog.
I was attacked by an Akita at 12 years old ... simply for walking past its house. It came off the steps and after me. Thank God I had 2 of my 3 German Shepherds with me or I'd have been seriously injured. Akitas are gorgeous dogs though, and I do not hold the attack on me against the whole breed. Japan using Akitas' pelts to line the coats of their soldiers ... a dog supposedly so revered in Japan, or the pelt of any dog, is a cruel irony (sheer some sheep wool instead for goodness sake).
Akitas have to be trained to control their protective side at a young age. Our first akita was very and protective. Also my akita/ saint bernard mix is too. But with the right owner their just so darn cuddly and cute!!
@KarmicOmen You walk around age 12 with 3 dogs past an akita home !!!!
you are stupid !!!! this is noit done and could cause problem with any type of dogs. The akita was defending his territory and was in fact fighting with your dogs.
This is what a dog should do , so next next time think before you do something stupid, this has nothing to do with an akita

Definitely. Akita's are not a great choice for first time dog owners. The pay off is incredible though.
