  • @Dexflorida This clip shows that there's a human heart inside him. Or maybe he just has really good spindoctors :)

  • retard is not a bad word but the context you use it in. kids use it to sound cool but it means slow. people get really offended by saying this even though they are using it in the sense of something that is slow. i think by the man using it in the video. maybe. but dont use it to describe people. it is ok if it is used like. the parachute is used to retard my fall.

  • Retarded does not mean slow in the term people use it. It is meant to be demeaning and only makes the person using it sound ignorant. This from the mother of a 4 year old boy with down syndrome.

  • Retarded - Occurring or developing later than desired or expected; delayed.

It's all about perception of the word, not intention.

    Stop being so damn sensitive.

and for those who think comparing "retarded" to the "N-word" is equivalent and is also a HUGE "special pleading" fallacy in that the "N-word's" only usage comes from that of a disparaging definition.

  • I love that analogy and havent heard it in a long time. Well said sir (or madam).

  • Here's a man I thought I'd never have an ounce of respect for despite anything he says... but damn I guess I was wrong. Hats off to Bill O'Reilly for having the balls to apologize on behalf of his show. I'm feeling a little more optimistic now.

  • very well said, dexflorida!

  • thats a really good analogy

  • retarded just means slowed

  • not in this context i mean it can also mean slowed but in the context that most of us know (and object to) it is the same as using the 'N' word to a black person

As the parent of an autistic child I could never EVER condone the use of the word in that context

  • Wow.... so John C. McGinley and the Special Olympics Committee calls Dick Morris out.... and all they get is "we are sensitive to the point... shouldn't use that word"??!? Really??

Let him call someone the N-word. The African-American people as a whole have their stuff together with this... Jessee Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been ALL over it.

I hope John C. McGinley becomes as big an activist for special needs people ...

  • Political correctness is killing our society, not the "r-word", for Pete's sakes...

  • "Maybe I'm out of the loop on this" would have made better sense. Good on you Mr. O'Reilly.

  • Holy Crap! The title of this video listed RETARDED as "The R-Word"!! Wow. Are we in kindergarden here?

  • it would appear so considering people arent strong enough emontionally to handle hearing a word even if its not directed at anyone.

  • It's like calling a black person a certain other word that is referred to as "the N-word" to their face. When you're in a situation where haggling is involved, you are "Jewing them down".

If you're going to be insensitive and take some form of a stand, you might want to learn how to spell kindergarten.

  • I think you need to grow up a bit and realize the light that people use the word in. Calling it the "R-Word" is a little bit childish. Ummm..yeah. I spelled that correktly. If something like this is going to cause a person to break down in tears, then perhaps the problem is a bit deeper than something the word police can fix. Bill O'Reilly handled it correctly, given peoples HYPER-sensitivity. Get real, dude. Can I say dude?

  • @yardometer i dunno, man. maybe you should stick to 'friend' or 'buddy' lest someone be offended - oh wait, never mind, people who can be injured by language are a detriment to society.

  • I agree with you 100%!!!!

Just be a little more sensitive to someone other than yourself, right?

  • @yardometer learn to spell dumb ass

  • that was the most pussified, nonchalant, crappy attempt at an apology ever

  • Political correctness FTW!!!

Lets ban everything offensive that we don't like cause we are so mature we get pissed off so easily

what a great age we live in

  • Politically correction is the most digusting abberation of modern times.

It keeps white people from using words only black people can use. It allows liberals to set the standards of righteousness.

When people say the word, they mean "mentally handicaped". So what people are doing is trying to stop "Mentally handicapped" an insult. Its like banning people commenting on fat people, except obvious that is for there own good. Poltical correction stopped fat people from being told they are fat.

  • the word retard is often used synonymously with bad or unintelligent. when used in a pejorative way, as it all too often is, it is offensive, since it translates as a person who has a intellectual disability is bad. we need to learn to see past people's disabilities and focus on their abilities. it is not a matter of telling you what you can and can not say. i just want you to understand how hurtful the word retard is, and to ask you to not use the term as it offends a large number of people

  • While I agree with the overweight point of your argument; having a mental disability is rarely, if ever, a choice.

  • I ritard all the time while playing music.

  • Doesn't retarded mean slow?? Why are we looking at things so negative?

  • He should have said "maybe I'm a little special needs developmentally differently ably-challenged special about this..".

  • Hahaha i would die of laughter if that happened.

My 9 year old neice came home in tears and I asked her "whats wrong?" She was crying because "the constitution had a swear the word, retarded." I was pissed I'm not gonna lie.

  • Oh what a cute video showing how POLITICALLY CORRECT this right-wing piece of shit is becoming!

  • Taking away the word retard, and it's derivative, is wrong. Freedom of Speech is more valuable than anyone's feelings. At what point do you stop? If you take away retard, nigger, faggot, and any other word that makes people cringe - which most of these do - lesser words will simply replace them. Then we take away those words. At what point do you stop? These people are retarded. Literally. I'm not going to construct a fairy tale for them. There are real problems in the world to solve.

  • @thornwithin81 - I'll continue to make the point to you since you like to troll these videos and put people down. No one is asking to limit your freedom of speech. You make a good point about the other slurs, and our society has shown a willingness to choose language more carefully when awareness is raised to the hurtful nature of certain words. Choice, not mandate.

You choose to use words that hurt people. That is your choice. No one can stop you. Congrats on putting your best foot forward

  • You are right about the value of the freedom of speech. If anyone wants to know what life is like without it they only need to take a look at China. But this campaign isn't asking the federal government to punish every use of the word. Freedom of speech is for the people. This campaign is made up of people too. I haven't seen them disrespect freedom of speech--they just ask to stop the use of this one word that has perhaps caused much judgment and lost self-esteem.

  • I understand where you're coming from, but I feel that you're conflating censorship and forbearance. Censorship is always dubious. But forbearance can be admirable. No one is going to press criminal charges against people who use these words, it's just a societal consensus to try to be respectful.

  • It's the thought that counts, and although I hate O'Reilly with the fire of a thousand suns it is to his credit that he at least acknowledged JCM and the Special Olympics' response. You pretty much had to be missing a carotid pulse if you were not moved by the response video.

  • Okay...I know woman who uses the term "MR", has a degree in Special Education and works at a home for special needs children. Why is it okay for her to use the term "MR" which means "mentally retarded" but it's not okay to use the word retarded? Instead of trying to get people to stop using the word retarded (I REFUSE to use the term "R-word"), why don't you focus your efforts on other things like finding more ways to fund special needs research? O'Reilly DID NOT have to apologize for this.

  • It is okay to use MR or "mentally retarded" because they are diagnoses. The word "retarded" means slow. If a police officer said "I tripped him and retarded his escape" it would be okay. What is not okay is to use the word retarded as a label. You wouldn't say a person with cancer was cancerous, why would you say that a person with mental retardation is retarded?

Morris uses retarded in place of stupid. It is common in the way many people speak, but that doesn't make it right.

  • But I would, and have heard others (doctors, nurses) say someone is cancerous if they have cancer! I don't think the way Morris used it demeans anyone. If he had said, "Bill, you're a retard," then yes, that could be offensive. I just think by making an uproar about this it gives the word the exact power people are trying to take away...if that makes any sense. I think O'Reilly's abpology was insincere because he doesn't believe Morris said anything wrong. I think Fox made him apologize.

  • Comment removed

  • it just didn't sound like an apology, he made it sound like he was right the whole time

  • Man, you can't say anything anymore. This is retarded. :(

  • You like to troll and pick on people do ya?

Well, the youth here decided to build people up instead of breaking them down. I'm proud they are the future of our society.

  • Did anyone other than me think Bill's apology sounded sarcastic? Glad McGinley wrote him a letter though. Now to see if Bill actually refrains from saying it. Probably not.

  • @RobinClone I would have sent back a letter to Jaina C McGinley to bugger off with the political correctness.

  • Probably won't stop people from using it on his show. He's an ass.

  • What a great example of the power of youth activiation!
