  • My dad was a freedom fighter and came to England when he was 16. I'm proud of my Hungarian heritage and also for the courage my dad and others had.

  • god bless them and the people that ran with him.. i am 34 yrs old and my mother (gyulai is their last name) and they made their way across EU. i can remember going to visit family friend (lousie bachi) sorry about spelling and louie always gave me chocolate .. botttom line is this is a story that needs to be told.god bless you .every one

  • Thank you for sharing your story. My father came as a refugee to Canada shortly after the Hungarian revolution. He was only about 4-5 years old. His father too went to was and he to had no memory of his father.

Thanks to those Hungarian freedom fighters, people who fought with spirit and refused to be suppressed.

  • My father I believe was from Smbothaley He came to American the same way..He was 21 and left his whole family behind...He never went back....His name is Frank Nyari born 2-22-1931...I have recently started a family tree...but I don't have much to go by...Sad how things change in life..yet they still remain the same...Any info would be greatly appreciated....Thanks Gitta

  • @gittaburt hm, check the name of city and person first please, I believe you meant Szombathely but am not sure, also, Frank equals german Franz and hungarian Ferenc, and in hungarian, first the family name comes. Nyari I am sure is meant to be Nyári (but this letter desn't exist in english so they usually convert it to an "a"), which means "from summer" or "summer-like".

this makes it: Nyári Ferenc, from Szombathely ("Szombat" means "Saturday", "hely" means "place")

    Ny

  • @gittaburt I am not sure I can help with pre-WW2 info, but I will ask a bit around, still, with the corrected city and person name (Szombathely/Nyári Ferenc) even if I am unable to aid further you should still be more able to find info on your own, in the worst case you could still send an e-mail to either the "governor" of Szombathely or to one of the many hungarian-american sites to ask for further aid from people who have connection to both US and hungarian people.

  • This gentlemans story is simular to that of my father's. My father escaped w/ a bullet wound to his arm, he was shot near the Opera house of Budapest. My father never returned to Hungary. I would like to research Hungarian records of my dad and family if I could knew the language and had access to the information. Thank you for posting this gentlemans story.

  • Hundred kilometers is not "over eighty miles' Let`s keep it real, it is 62.3km. I understand that revolution had a lot of grey areas.

  • Sorry, 62.3 miles - 100 km

  • lol my grand parents escaped with my aunt and uncle when my aunt and uncle were an infant and a todler

they eventualy came to america through canada

    their rout was hungary>austria>canada>usa

it took them three tries to escape

they were cought 2 of those times one in a red cross building and 2 at the border the thrid time they got a guide that took them across

my grandmother is curently the hungarian consul of washington state

    her maried name is szablya

and i am proud to be her grandson

  • I live in Táplánszentkereszt, really near to Szombathely.

If someone says he is in spirit and soul hungarian, than he is, wherever he was born originally.

Maybe we lose our home slowly, but we gain in numbers on the whole world.

  • @joriandrake Hello...I am trying to locate my fathers family in Hungary...My dad was very private and didn't give out much information about his life in hungary...All she know is his name and the town he may have came from...Frank Nyari...Szombathely he was born 2-22-1931..He came to American when he was 21...If you can help me with any information that would be great...Let me know if you can.....Thank you ....Gitta
