I agree that the reason you buy a two channel amp is to not drag pedals around, otherwise spend the extra on a great sound clean amp and add pedals to taste. The channel switching, the good sounding lead channel and the reduction in weight ( with the options to leave pedals at home ) is the reason I'm looking at this video. And I own an OCD and RC booster.
Man I thought that sounded bad on the clean channel of that classic 30, that being said I have had a hard time finding an overdrive or distortion that sounded natural for the clean channel. I thought the way huge green overdrive II sounded fantastic on the dirty channel gave it that extra umph sounded like a modified JCM 900 I use to have
@BZ nice job. Big advantage of pedals is that you can get the tones you're looking for without cranking your amp; a huge advantage when playing in smaller venues or trying to keep stage volume levels tolerable. Your OCD seems a bit noisy though
I don't care for the OCD myself. It sounded better before you switched it on, and overdriving the Peavey harder would give a much better sound altogether.
@BluesZep I'm just not much of a pedal guy Fernando. I feel like, if you have to put a pedal in front of an amp, then you've got the wrong amp. Or the amp needs beefing up. Or you've got the wrong guitar. Or the wrong pickps. I'd rather work on those things and keep my signal chain as pure as possible. But I also understand that a pedal is a quick fix and often cheaper than customizing an amp etc. So that's cool with me. Carry on guitar man.
@sthugh Just shows how opinions differ. I love the sound of a good pedal driving a good amp; more so than just amp distortion most of the time. It just has a smoother, cleaner sound to me. Even SRV preferred clean headroom on the amp with pedals for overdrive.
Hi BluesZep, nice demo. At times it's almost like there is no pedal except there is because it's adding the dirt to the sound. Is your Classic 30 one of the ones with the curved top part (newer one)? It sounds quite brite is it a stock speaker?
Great demo Zep. I happened to stumble across this as I was looking at OCD demos. I am currently running 2 Ibanez TS9 pedals for cascading od stages, but am considering going with the OCD. Great sounds brother.
Also. How is this thing one the bass notes> Does it fart out? That's my main problem with the Cube-60. Plus I just want a damn TUBE AMP! I purchased the Laney LCR15 thinking it would be enough but the poor thing was too small and not enough cleans at high volumes for me.
I have never notice it. The bass are tight, but keep in mind that I play blues, classic rock, and MPB. I don't know if bass notes keep tight with extreme distortion (and I don't know if it's your case).
I have a Roland Cube-60 and I'm really in for an upgrade. No stacks for me because I play only medium to small gigs. If anything I'll mike up this bad boy.
I own both the classic 50 and classic 30. They both have a ton of headroom. If you are driving them to the point they break up, your neighbors have already called the police. I have never had either of mine over 5-6.
Dude i just got the OCD today and holy shit man its amazing. I put my blues junior on 1 with the master volume on 2 and i put on the OCD with full everything on the HP selector and it made it go from nothing to FULL GAIN BOOST CRANKED! i can go on and on but this thing is amazing! SO WORTH IT
if you used a guitar with high output pups you can get the high gain of EVH or even metal.you really have to drive the tubes on a classic 30 to get that serious break up you're looking for with metal...but its not a metal amp by no means
The boost function really helps to nail some of those high gain marshall style tones. Of course the sound isn`t going to be exactly Van Halen but what I meant is that it`s closer to hard rock than thrash metal :)
Classic 30`s overdrive channel is much more aggressive than the classic 50`s, in my opinion. I could imagine someone playing metal with it but the sound is more Van Halen than Slayer. There`s still much more gain compared to classic 50 and the quality of the overdrive sounds better to my ears. But with classic 50`s clean channel...man, you`re in country heaven!
i think its because the classic 30(combo, obviously) is running through one 12" and the two versions of the classic 50 run through a 2x12 and a 4x10... Some people forget that the speaker breaks up and distort just the same way the tubes do... any ways great amp and demo playing.
Could this amp play along with drums without sounding shit? if i had a good Metal distortion pedal, could i pull it off with this amp? and mix the distortion in on the drive channel?
I doubt you would get metal sounds out of this amp, I had Peavey Classic 50 and it was suited best for blues/classic rock. Good amp, but not the best choice for metal, try an Orange amp(tiny terror if a big one is out of your budget.)
That's not a real OCD pedal. You only pressed it once to turn it on. If it was a real OCD pedal you'd have to keep clicking it on lots and lots of times to make SURE it was on :-P
Thanks for your vids, I'm auditioning a Classic 30.
Naw, that was the same guy twice. He had to press it the second time just to make sure. It'll be -6 by the end of the week :-P Apparently it really does stand for "Obsessive Compulsive Drive."
Do you find that the OCD compresses at medium to high overdrive setings? I am asking this because I also have a OCD (V3) and a Peavey Classic 30 and was wondering if the amp was the problem or if I should change my pickups in my guitar, a Gibson LP Studio.
I'm at a crossroads whether or not I should buy an OCD. I will have the budget, but I already have a modded tubescreamer, a grey DOD 250, and a soon to be attenuator.
I'm not sure if spending another 150 bucks on an OD when it's already similar to my 250 (tranparent, crunchy)
i have the same amp and i am thinking about buying this pedal. Can you use this pedal while on the gain channel of the classic 30 at the same time? Like, can you have the pre at 12, so max gain, and the volume wherever you want. Can you then turn on the pedal and give a gain boost but not cover up the amps original tone?
Yes, OCD is also an excelent booster. But I think there are many good boosters out there, and OCD is a great overdrive. I prefer to use it like an overdrive.
I just got the version 3 OCD and I love it. It's super touch sensitive; play light, and it cleans up. Play hard, and it rocks out. It's really more like another instrument than just a pedal.
thanks for the demo. I play a Highway 1 Strat through a Classic 30, so this was exactly what I was looking for. I'm still not sold on distortion pedals. I get some really great sounds out of the amp without them, but this gives me something else to think about :]
The OCD can run at 18 volts as well as 9v. You should try it, it reaches new frequencies, maybe a little bit more sharper than the 9 volts sound....but is worth a try...you might love it!!! Thanks for your video btw, is great!!!
The tone control has been altered a little, adding more midrange. More informations you can read on the fulltone's site. There is a pdf file explaining all the changes and the serial number that tells what version OCD is.
CLean channel sounds sweet also, what more do you need outside time based effects.

How is the clean channel?
How does it react to overdrive pedals?
I would be using a TS Clone, a Fulldrive 2 Mosfet, and a Blackstar HT-Dual.

This amp is pretty loud, it breaks up around 5. It's volume enough for medium and small gigs, louder than the heaviest drummer you can play with.
