  • This is POSITIVELY Steve Augeri!!!!

  • in this version the vocal part is steve augeri, im 100% sure,

  • Anyone who thinks this is Deen Castronovo singing is indisputably an idiot. This is definitely Steve Augeri singing

  • dean

  • It's Steve Augeri singing!! Any real Journey fan would know that!!

  • the transition and the pitch of augeri's song is different that deen's song so its definitely steve a. singing...deen has a high pitch than augeri, we all know that...end of topic XD

  • BTW, Perry slaughters this live over anyone. Anyone else sounds weak and feeble...

  • Steve is singin, ive heard them both...Deen sings it differently...and better, I think!

  • Definitely Augeri

  • Deen is singing the background vocals...

  • This is Steve Augeri singing Mother/Father at this gig. Was there too.

  • This is Augeri. You can tell by the way it was butchered.

  • This is Augeri singing. I cant believe people cant tell the difference.

  • no joke..how can you not tell....pretty decent actually

  • That's Augeri. Deen did usually sing it around then though. You can hear Deen on backing vocals. Anyone can't tell that's Augeri doesn't know the band.

  • @ housemandoc23. 5 years into his 8 year career with Journey is not "very early" as u put it.

  • @ housemandoc23.

  • Augerie indeed. lol, gotta be deaf to hear the stark difference

  • This is Steve, Deen pulls it off much better. Still sounds pretty good though. I know Arneal couldn't sing this song good enough.

  • That's Deen. His voice has a slightly thicker quality with less power on the top end. If it were Augeri the highs would be a lot clearer and the tone would be consistent across the range. Unquestionably Castronovo singing this one.

  • this is steve listen to the vids with deen singing it,wayyyyy better and smokes this tune, this is good but not deen at all!

  • @MichaelRivetteTV agreed

  • An amazing night with amazing friends. My brothers, our girls, and the most amazing band ever were there.

  • This is Deen......................He has been the one singing this song for several years.

Even when Augeri was in the band, Deen sang it.

  • @1guitardude50 no no no no no! This is Augeri, everyone, I am 100% sure this is Steve. Deen never started singing it till late 2003, 2004. This is one of the few times Steve actually sang it. This IS STEVE

  • @laddieola101 No im pretty sure this is deen. But it doesn't really matter that much. The only true truth we can pull from this is that Steve Perry sang it better than both of them.

  • @1guitardude50

Haha, take another listen there, guitar dude. Order some bifocals as well. This is 100% Steve Augeri.

  • @1guitardude50 Yeah, you're absolutely wrong. Thanks for playing though.

  • @1guitardude50 This is hands down Steve Augeri, yes Deen started singing some back up but later I to was at this show as well as about 5 or 6 a year. We got to be friends people just don't want to admit how good he is or give up the Perry dream. Good news Steve has a new solo CD coming out. Deen does sing a lot with the new line up Arnel can't carry it and it is starting to show. This is My Man Steve it was a great show I miss him but can't wait to see him again. A great job by Steve Augeri:)

  • This is Deen......................

  • this is augeri..but deen has that raspy voice that is sooooo much better to this song

  • Dean Sings it best!

  • How is this album, Any Good? is it a bootleg? Any opinions would be welcome.

  • This is definitely Steve Augeri

  • this is without a doubt, steve augeri...he did a great job on this song but deen clearly sings this with ease

  • This was Steve Augeri singing, not Deen C.

  • I DISAGREE THIS IS DEEN.. AS I WAS THERE FOR THIS SHOW..

  • @MrBQ2010 I'm really sorry, but I have to disagree. This is without question augeri. I have the video footage of this concert, It has steve singing, I know their voices. This is Steve Augeri singing! Deen starting singing Mother Father in 2004.

  • @laddieola101 show the freaking video then, people wont argue with you if you actually showed it

  • @sirspamsalot2 I bought a new computer recently and alot of my video files got deleted, unfortunately this concert is one of them. Watch some of my other videos of augeri live w/o autotune and you will hear that it is augeri, and not deen

  • @laddieola101 This is Augeri at 100%, his voice is unmistakable, very great performance!

  • @laddieola101 yes, it's definitely steve Augeri, coz of a lot of off keys.... Deen could hit the notes the way it should be and there's no way it's Deen on this clip. More shouting on this clip, as Augeri does....

  • @laddieola101 I will see Steve on Saturday and ask him in person. I don't have a dog in this fight though.

  • @MrBQ2010 This definitely sounds like Augeri to me.

  • @MrBQ2010 Maybe you were at the show but your head was up your ass. I know for a fact this is Augeri and not Deen because of Augeri's distinct tone. If you can't tell by listening to it then you really don't deserve to even be commenting.

  • Augeri. Not even questionable. Definitely before his voice gave out. Best live performance I have heard from him.

  • This is Castronovo on vocals. No way Augeri can sing this good...live.

  • @ferdzkii Ok, I have the video footage of this concert. This IS Augeri, stop saying its Deen, because it't not, Ok? I put Augeri in the video name because it's him! This was before deen started singing!

  • This is definitely Augeri. The vocal tone sounds like Augeri, so it must be Augeri. But I could be wrong

  • I would say he not only pulls it off, he is every bit as good as steve perry with more power and range, not to mention he is rocken the hell out of the drums, this guys range is sick, not sure why he is not the lead singer of jouney to be honest.

  • @BobbyMcintyre12 Its augeri, guy WAS the lead singer.

  • Hello everyone, this is laddieola101. i lost my password to the laddieola101 account, and made this one. Stop arguing about who's singing. I do have video footage of this concert, and it IS Steve singing! Just enjoy the music without arguing please!

  • This is Deen Castronova singing,,,,,,,,,,,while i like Deen's voice, Steve Augeri's has more range and tonal color to make it consistently interesting

please keep in mind that BOTH are singing at times

  • This is Deen singing not Augeri

  • Personally, I think it is Augeri. Augeri's voice has more of a soft sound than Deen's and you can really hear that in the beginning

  • I think it's Deen Castronovo who's singing at 3:13 - 3:16 "Turn away". It sounded like him. I remember reading where Herbie said in an interview: "he (Augeri) would drop his microphone and the vocal would continue". Probably this is one of those times. Sorry, Augeri fans, it's just my opinion. But I liked his voice though.

  • Steve Augeri is the best

  • I can tell this is Augeri. He is the best

  • it took Perry to make it soar.. Stop comparing, there is no comparison the other guys are good singers but nothing more than Steve Perry hacks on Journey songs. People still go to Journey concerts to hear songs that Steve Perry created, not the new ones. If you had any concept of how good Steve Perry really is as a singer/ songwriter this Journey singer argument would not exist.

  • That is your opinion. I agree with you that Steve Perry is a legend, but there are some Journey fans, myself included, that like the new singers just as much if not more

  • How can anybody compare any other singer from Journey to Steve Perry. There is absolutely no comparison. He wrote the songs, created the melody that we all still listen to today. Not only was he one of the greatest singers ever, he's never given credit in any of these forums for his originality and creativity. Yes the other members helped write the songs too, but from the behind the music story the keyboard player brought the melody for open arms to another singer and he thought it was junk

  • I really personally think that Deen is the greatest singer that Journey has ever had. Perry Screamed alot.

  • Huge Augeri fan does a nice job on this classic but Deen has made his own masterpiece on this one

  • Damn he did a good job!!!

  • This is Augeri singing. NOT CASTRONOVO

  • Arnel can sing this song great too in choosing the right key. The arrangement of today's JOURNEY is to have Deen take the vocals on MOTHER, FATHER everytime they plan to sing the song in a concert just to give arnel a break in singing sooooo loooooooong hoursssss. That's their main concern.

  • if Deen would've hit the g5, his performance would've been the best, in my opinion, it was like hearing it for the first time, the tone, duration, and delivery of the notes were more fluid then technical in his performance. But the showcase at the end of the song is what completes it as a true testament to vocal success... which is why Perry was so awesome when he sang it.

  • Augeri is good in this song but to my own opinion...It is DEENs' piece....became Deen's fan after hearing his version .....

  • Steve perry is retired I believe so Journey fans stand behind the band or listen to rap

  • I dunno.. I do like Perry's version better, but this one is really good.

  • Deen is the MASTER of this song. I am a life long Perry fan but DEEN is a GOD on this song!!

  • Does anybody know how I can get this CD?

  • do u have any video from this concert????

  • This is Augeri Singing....

  • NO STEVE PERRY - NEVER WILL BE

  • Im going to have to disagree. This is augeri singing 100%.. I put steve augeri in the title for a reason.. So people would not think its deen. This whole setlist was sung by Steve, and this was before deen started singing mother father..

  • This is Augeri...you can hear a distinct difference in Dean's voice and Augeri's voice, Dean's voice sounds softer and more bassy where as Augeri's voice has that soaring treble to it. This was very early in his career with Journey, which is why Steve can hit the high notes.

  • If I had never heard SP's version of this song I would say SA did a great job BUT I have heard the original and SA can't come any where near the final notes. Facts are facts. Steve Perry is THE VOICE often imitated NEVER duplicated

  • Yes, I can recognize it as Augieri without being told, and I agree with you. The FIRST time I heard Augieri sing "Separate Ways" I thought, gee, he did sound like Perry, but after all the listening I've done in the past year & more of ALL Journey's many lead singers there's NO ONE as good as Perry, and especially on this song: watch/hear Perry do it on the "Escape: Houston" DVD!!

  • Yeah, it's definitely Steve Augeri...I think he did pretty well on this song. I liked Augeri when he was in the band. He was good enough to be the lead singer of Journey at that time. But not to disrespect Augeri, when I heard Deen sing, I was blown away! His voice sounds quite close to SP.

  • Its Ross singing without a doubt!

  • This is, without doubt, Steve Augeri singing Mother Father.

  • yes, that is why i put steve augeri in the description :P

  • This is not Deen . Yes their are many clips of Deen doing this on youtube during the Soto time and now with Arnel . And i think people just assume it's him because of all those clips .

But anyone who know SA"s voice can hear it's not Deen . Ask Laddieola who posted this who is it ?

  • I know Deen sings it now ! and when Jeff Soto was in the band . Augeri sang it back during this time . I saw him with Journey live i should know .

  • This is Deen singing. Not Augeri. Post one of SA singing and you will see.

  • obviously you cant hear but can you at least read? There is one posted with SA singing and this is it!

  • No it's Steve Augeri . Deen started singing this one later on .

  • This is Deen. They both sang. Just like they do now with Arnel.

  • You call me a dumbass ? It's clearly Augeri ! your so tone deaf you can't even tell his voice .

    Get your facts straight noob

  • Go & watch all the vids on Youtube if you don't believe me. You are truly as worthless as they come.

  • This is Steve augeri.... I believe that deen started singing this during the 2004 tour....

  • Lights tribute dott comm

  • Arnel sings beautifully, but deen sings much better this song that arnel, perry and augeri, it is quite

  • I agree with joyell222, their drummer was second best. There will never be another Steve Perry

  • The only one that can even be considered second best to Steve Perry singing this would be there current drummer which sounds a hell of allot better than Arnel does.

  • 1:43-2:11 ...Steve A. was a great fu*kin singer!!! ..that kicks so much ass.. so does Deen's version.. that is wonderful too! I wish everyone would just realize that every time someone sings a SP song, it is a tribute to that legacy... keeping it alive.. if it weren't for journey going on without SP, then the next generation of musicians will be less likely to here this stuff at all.. journey would eventually become old news to kids, and worst of all would not become an influence anymore

  • I'm too lazy to read all the comments, so I will just say that this song should just be left out of the set without Steve. It is personal to him alone. Sound-alikes are all fine and dandy...just kinda bugs me.

  • They don't call Steve Perry's perfect countertenor range "The Vocal Wrecking Ball" for nothing.

  • Not bad on a very tough song...Deen is probably better...but remember they are all COPYING the original...

  • DavidMichael187, I have to AGREE, nobody can sing like Steve and this is horrible.

  • steve augeri kinda sounds the same as steve perry

  • To be honest i think Deen in Las Vegas sang this song better than any other lead singer of journey has. (including the original) No disrespect intended but it takes alot of talent to sing as well he did and play the drums at the same time, especially the way deen did.

  • Comment removed

  • Steve Augeri Rock This song!!!Beauty Voice!!!

  • JayZee23 , lay off the the drugs, you have no idea.

  • lolz!!! i agree that JayZee23 is taking too much crack! Journey will never be the same without Perry.

Yet their current lead singer AP just mess up singing DSB before the superbowl started.

  • Amazing---pretty darn good, even though it isn't Perry, my favorite vocalist of all time. Augeri really pulls this one off.

  • DEEN IS WAY BETTER!

  • JayZee23, I have to disagree, that's a crazy comment. No one can sing a Steve Perry song nearly as good as Steve Perry can.

  • All Journey vocalist are great any of them!! wow they all sounds alike im a singer myself i can tell it they all sounds alike!!.

  • I am a singer as well, and that has NOTHING to do with your "EAR" for music. If you think they all sound alike, you don't have a clue.

  • this song belongs to Deen and Deen alone. He has the BEST VOICE for this particular song.the rest belongs to Steve and Arnel.Arnel is incredibly amazing!for someone who can play Sting,Survivor,Aerosmith etc..check it out.Watch for yourself.check out Arnel's roxanne by Sting.incredible voice.incredible emotions!

  • You know, for a song as hard as this, he did REALLY good. I have a wide range, but I can't even hit that last note in falsetto. (the high g at the end) I go from about a low a to about a high c. (Comfortably) I can go a few notes higher, but I'd rather avoid it if I can.

  • deed is even better than SP singing this song deen voice is unique so SP, SA, AP, JSS does also all the ex journey vocalist they are all good!!!! very unique..

  • Deen is better than ALL of them except Perry. NO ONE is as good as he was.

  • i know.. but i think Deen sing this one with more vocal range than anybody else just my oppinion becoz i heard it in the new dvd release ^^ i know SP much better than him in different song.

  • Depends on WHEN (what year) you heard Perry sing it. His voice weaken in late 1983. If you have heard him sing it in 1981 (the Houston concert)then your opinion may be different. Type it in and listen. His range was off the scale then. Don't get me wrong, Deen is THE MAN in my book, but Perry 78-81 was just pure perfection

  • Also, Deen doesn't go into the high falsetto shrill at the end like SP did. People think falsetto is EASY, but it's not. This why you never hear Arnel or Deen do it. I put Deen second to Perry and then Arnel then Augeri then Soto. Soto just totally sux at Journey songs in my opinion

  • They all have different pattern of singing..so we cant really say whos the best and whos better but i think they all have a good voice and i hope one day AP will sing this song also.. And about jeff Scott Sotto hes a metal rock singer he just help Journey that time we should thanks him for doing that jeff scott sotto singing a different level of song which is make him doesnt fit with journey but he did a great job to make the band stay alive we should thankful him too. watch stand up and shout.

  • It's ALL a matter of Opinion. when I listen to Journey's 1981 Houston concert, There is no doubt that SP was on top of his game that year. EVERY song at that concert was PERFECT. SP did not go flat, miss a note, word, or anything. He hit every high note perfectly. I've never seen ANYONE do a whole concert and not make one single vocal mistake. UNBELIEVABLE. They all may be good, but my opinion is Perry was untouchable.

  • Deen doesnt have the range that Steve perry does, or the power. But he is very good, I think hes better than SA.

  • Are you confusing falsetto with head voice?

  • no confusion. What Perry did at the end of this song was falsetto. Deen nor Arnel try this. Again, unless a person is gifted in the art of transforming from natural OR Head voice into falsetto, it sounds weak and basically, LIKE CRAP. SP could transition it beautifully. The others don't do it because they can't. A lot of people think Perry sang in falsetto ALL THE TIME. They are just ignorant as to what falsetto is. Example: "Open Arms", Don't Stop Believin'" does not have falsetto anywhere!

  • Amen...I think the average person thinks any guy singing high must be in falsetto. Ridiculous.

  • Thank you!! Glad to know SOMEONE knows the difference!

  • shoot, I'm glad someone knows the difference too! Haggardfan123, thank you so much for being one who realizes one of the things that separates Steve Perry from all the rest.

  • Thank you ! Someone with a clue! Steve Perry's range and delivery are simply untouchable. SA, Deen, JSS and Arnel are all very good singers just not as good as Steve Perry.

  • Thank you ! Someone with a clue! Steve Perry's range and delivery are simply untouchable. SA, Deen, JSS and Arnel are all very good singers just not as good as Steve Perry "was". -fixed that for you.

  • Dean has way more power and range than Perry! Not to take away from Perry, but Dean kills this song better than anyone else!

  • Deen is bad ass! AND, (I don't know if this matters or not), but Deen is singing this sitting down and wailing on the drums. And still doesn't miss a beat or a note. Damn near perfect, I'd say. Just my humble opinion. =)

  • couldn't have said it better. I find myself coming back to this video over and over!

  • I agree with cmunik8r.

I think this song needs "intensity","sharpness" and "a sense of rhythm" to sing.Deen has all of them(not only in his drumming but also in his vocalization).I think this is why Deen is better than anyone for this song.

  • Let's not forget Steve Perry. Steve Perry sang this song best, period. Deen sang it quite well, too though, better than all the rest, but Steve Perry did the best job with this song, hands down.

  • agreed!!! its really the best.,, deen castronovo sang this song better than augeri, soto and arnel but he will never surpass perry's passion singing this song.. his performance for this song is epic..

  • Well, hmmm...we all know what happened to SA...personally I thought he was great...and it's sad he went through so much. This is an incredibly difficult song to sing and personally, I think Deen sings it better than anyone (yeah, even SP)...there's a reason even Arnel steps out of the way to let him handle it. I'd be interested knowing why MusicalPeep doesn't think he could front this band...seems the band didn't think so either...maybe Deen didn't want to...hmmm...

  • or i can be the new singer :)

  • right on laddieola...post your version of the tune then and let's hear it! ;-)

  • aha, it probably wouldnt be too well :)

  • Fantastic job by Augeri, but a REALLY fantastic solo by Schon on this one! I read all of these comments about Journey vocalists, yet nobody comments on how amazing Neal Schon is.

  • actually Dean, the drummer is great at this song!

  • lol dean is great at every song... in my opinion better at some songs than sp or ap. but i dont think he could ever be a frontman

  • Hey MZowski83 where in Michigan did you see them? I also saw them in MI- at DTE (Pine Knob!)- I went reluctantly because I was still in mourning over Steve Perry, but Augeri blew my socks off! I can't get enough of him!! Hey Steve- if you read any of these comments- we want more of you!

  • aha, I wonder how he would feel after he reades all these nice comments about him!!!!!!! :')

  • Augeri, sang this song amazing. Never heard him sing this before. Wow, is all i can say.

Pery is the man but Augeri out did himself on this.

  • Allegan County, MI it was on 9/11 i didn't honestly think they were going to perform that night because of the obvious events but they did and ironically that was the first time i saw Journey it was a great show!!! Augeri was screaming out all the highest notes back in 2001 and 2002 he was on fire for so long it's so bad seeing what happened to his throat.

  • Ok this rivals Perry, i mean this is sick. Why did he get sick?...

  • what?

  • This rivals perry as in it is as good (i think it sounds better), this is sick is just another way of saying this is awesome. then i am mourning the fact that he had throat problems by asking myself why he got sick (as in the throat problems)

  • oh ok, thanks dude, i agree!

  • because you, like most people, don't notice autotune whe you hear it! nobody else notice the computerised sound of his voice at 1:48 to 1:51...?? in fact its there throughout the entire song but very noticable on this part. fact it is was all pre recorded and performed with playback. He a great singer, but when you constantly try to sing outside of your range it takes its toll.

  • I seriously doubt there is any autotune on this. It's very noticeable. I don't hear anything except reverb at the part you mention. How do you know it was a playback, though?

  • Us average Joes do not know what Autotune is I had to look it up"Auto-Tune is available as a plug-in for professional audio multi-tracking suites used in a studio setting, such as Pro Tools, and as a stand-alone, rackmount unit for live performance processing.[2] Auto-tune has become standard equipment in professional recording studios" Now that we know what it is,as I stood there watching him in his glory sing this he sounded great, were you there? And HOW do you know this was pre-recorded?

  • I personally think this is a great reply

    ... i agree with Jorneyfanren!

  • Thank you Jarenr88

  • I hear no auto tone either

  • laddieola101- you have this concert on your computer? I have been trying to find bootleg video or audio of Steve A with Journey, but haven't succeded so far. Can you tell me how I can get it too?? Also where I can aquire other bootlegs? I LOVE STEVE AUGERI- and there is too little released with him singing! Very frustrating! thanks!!

  • go to guitars101 (dot) com. Search for journey. they have like a hundred

  • I remember seeing Journey on 9/11/01 They performed in michigan that night and this is one of the songs they did. That was the first time i saw them live and they opened with Any Way You Want It. They did a few songs off arrival umm... can't remember exactly but i know they did world gone wild (they said fitting considering the events that took place today sadly) and then they dedicated "livin' to do" to Neal's dad who passed away.

  • Steve Augeri!

    He's cool!

  • Awesome

  • Excellent singer.

  • this concert rocked! i have it on my computer. they had aynsley dunbar come out and play wheen in the sky for them on the drums. they also played black magic woman (Santana) and they played Everybody's Everything WITH Santana MEmbers
