i watched my first gp in 1985 and feel so fortunate to have seen those years. But circa `80-`84 was something else.......F1 today sadly does not have this mystique. It's sterile. Don't get me wrong I still love it.......but those were the days.............i wish descrasheris could have pinched this one lol
Lightning at Monaco,. drivers who didn't want to finish, drivers running out of fuel, sore ankles, potential disqualifications, oil on the track, (look at flags being waved), goodness me,..... aren't the races of today so dull in comparison?!
@londongamer You talk as if every race back then was exactly like this. They weren't. Most of them were interesting, but only a handful were classics, just like it is now. This race was the exception, not the rule.
@bourlivak88 Patrese said he rolled his Brabham down the hill and did a bump start...but watch the video and you can see he comes to a complete stop after stalling...I've always believed Patrese got a push-start and, therefore, should have been disqualified
@hugodrax71 indeed he got a push from marshalls, rolled downhill and bump-started his engine, maybe technically it was not considered a push-start, so he got away with it. anyway, his car was standing in a dangerous position so marshalls had to push it somewhere.
10 cars appeared in the final classement, but only 5 cars (Patrese, Mansell, de Angelis, Henton and Surer) saw the chequered flag. Pironi (2nd), de Cesaris (3rd), Daly (6th), Prost (7th) and Alboreto (10th) stopped with less than 8 laps to go.
i think this is the craziest F1 race of the last 30 years. nowadays there might be races with a mountain of fake overtakes (DRS), sometimes serveral drive throughs, but such a chaos is unique. Even a car without rear wing (Derek Daly) was able to win that race.
@dks11000 slight correction: all cars in these times always had a rear wing. You are probably referring to Derek Daly's Williams FW08, but he had lost his rear wing in this race. The Lotus 80 in the 1979 season tried to run without a rear wing during pre-season-testing, but a rear wing was added quickly after.
@thylegion Ground effect + wings IS better. Ground-effect has a catch: Bumps or other small alterations in ride-height allow "dirty" air to leak into the low-pressure area underneath the car, so it's hard to keep its downforce consistent. That's why they still used wings to compensate.
Cars that didn't use fixed wings (like the 1979 Arrows A2) proved to be a bit unstable while cornering.
I love how Murray completely doesn't register that Pironi is driving at snail pace, infact neither register Pironi lost a position at all, as far as you know by listening, Pironi is still in the lead LOL
Downforce isn't really so vital at Monaco, compared to other tracks, as the speeds are much lower (except around the tunnel area), and in the wet, it would be even slower.
I remember seeing this race live ... it was so exciting at the end. The other interesting thing here is the points totals in the championship - the leader having only 18pts after 6 rounds. That's an extraordinarily low figure at that stage. I think Rosberg only won 1 race that year in winning the title.
@davedavid86 Is that because of ground effect? 'Cause I can't quite see a Formula One car racing with half a front wing and deprived of its rear wing!
@VWatch07 Yes most of the downforce was generated by the car body, the wings were primarily for balance purposes.
Daly's car probably handled like a total pig at that point, but with the damage not easily repairable and with him on for some points, it looks like they just left him out, remember safety standards were much lower than they are today....
Yeah, Speedhunters brought me here to! Awesome eventful race that one was, but it just goes to show how much those cars were lacking compared to today's cars. Mechanical grip, aerodinamic grip, tires, good torque delivery, you name it. ..
A few laps before the video began Daly slid off at Tabac and lost his rear wing in the impact, but was still able to keep going afterwards, it's actually a bad mistake from Murray and James that they never seem to notice it.
long time ago, but i remember!

I was oddly disappointed that Patrese's car didn't blow up on the final straight or something.

Geez, Murray Walker isn't concerned at all with putting the kibosh on these guys huh? Said each guy is/was going to win the race.

It was the spirit of Gilles affecting the race from beyond, only he had the right to win it.
