Beautiful cake, as always! I have to make a luau cake this weekend for a friend. Could you please tell me how you created the grass skirt? I want it to look full like yours. What tools did you use? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. God bless.
Thank you so much! To make the skirt, I rolled out fondant and using a ruler, I marked how long I wanted the individual strands to be. Basically cut out one huge rectangle. Then with a pizza cutter I cut each individual strand just by eye-balling it. They don't all have to be exactly the same. I only did a few at a time because fondant dries out quicky and I needed them to still be plaible when I glued them onto the cake. I'd say I did about 10 strips at a time. ;)
Hi Laura, I 'm sorry for not thanking you sooner for your answer to my questions, but you know how busy life can get. Thanks again. I'm going to make a Hawaiian cake in August, for a bridal shower, and I am going to attempt to use some of your beautiful ideas. Your work is just great! Keep making your beautiful cakes. :}
Hi Laura, just wanted to let you know, how much I enjoy viewing all your cakes. They are just beautiful. The workmanship is excellent. I have a question and I was wondering if you can help me out. When did you put the hula skirt on the cake and was the gumpaste still pliable? Thanking you in advance.
Hi Amelia! Awww! Thank you so much! I appreciate that very much! Yes, the gumpaste was still very pliable. As soon as I cut it I placed it on the cake. It would be very hard to do if it was stiff. :) Hope this helps! :)
Hi! Thank you! ;) They are large circles cut out of gumpaste and I made the little cone shape in the middle with skewer in the center. Very simple. Please visit my FB page called Krazy Kool Cake Designs by Laura E. Varela-Wong so you can see my other creations! :) Or you can find the link on my channel info page here on YouTube! :0) Thanks! :)
Thank you! Sure thing! This bamboo mould comes in a metal plaque with a total of 4 different moulds. You can find it in the sculpting aisle where they have the clay and cutters at any craft store. I've found them both at Hobby Lobby and at Michael's. :0)
hi there, your tikis and bamboo are amazing!! i am obsessed with tikis and collect them, if you dont mind me asking how did you achieve your color, i noticed you started with white gumpaste...awesome awesome job! I am making MYSELF a tiki cake for my bday. lol.
Thank you so much! The colors were created by mixing two shades of brown with a bit of vodka. When the vodka evaporates it leaves a bit of a shine behind. :0) Gives it a wood feel. :)
Hi your cakes are beautiful but I have a question , how many days ahead of time do u make the cake and cover it with fondant. I do it the day of the party but I always seem to be rushing
Thank you! I cover my cake and decorate the day before. I'm usually up very late. I never make the cake no more than 3 days in advance so it will be nice and fresh. :0)
Laura I love love love your cake. Btw how do u measure your tiers so that it looks proportioned as far as height goes? Also How did you make the tiki men?
Thank you! I make sure every single layer within the tier are the exact same height using a cake leveler (torter). The tiki masks were made by carving the lines into the gumaste while still very moist with a pointy tool. Glad you liked it! :0)
Hi Laura, Has nothing to do with this cake, but i love looking at your cakes and I like the air brush that you do. I have just order Americolor Amerimist Student Kit Airbrush food color 12 pack from Amazon,Now the fun part I have no air brush machine but have a small compresser not as big as the one you have but I think it will work I have seen the hand held part that you have at Micheals I will go and buy me one but is it okay if when I get it if I have any ? is it okay to ask you.
Sure girl! No prob. You'll see that once you start messing around with it, you'll be able to figure it out. It's really easy. Here's a great suggestion so that you don't waste your color when you get your airbrush. Get a large piece of flat brown cardboard that you don't need. Instead of using your color, add WATER to your airbrush. That way you can mess around with the amount of water that comes out. Experiment with different distances you airbrush from so you can see the difference. :0)
Love this cake, its so pretty... totally awesome work with the masks... wow hand crafted... i know the weather can be a pain, we get loads of rain through out the year here in Vancouver, i have to put the air conditioner on for days like that....anyways....Keep caking! xxx
hi laura i love your cakes..i also live in tx n the humidity does suck....i was wondering i have always have that problem with the buttercream getting too soft how do i fix it?
Yes, you're right. The humidity does suck... I tried adding more powdered meringue so that the buttercream will harden but to no avail. I gues that when the weather is this bad, there's not much we can do about it. :0(
love the tiny matching cake ! I LOVE THE TORCHES !! WHERE DIDI YOU SAY UP BOUGHT THE MOLD? YOU ARE SO THOUGHTFUL TO SHARE YOUR WORK WITH US....THANKS CINDY
Hi Cindy, Thank you! The mold was purchased at Michael's and it's a brand name called Lisa Pavelka borders. She makes molds for sculpey clay. You'll find it in the sculpting aisle. :0)
Hi laura, beautiful cake as usual. Unfortunately, we can't help the weather-Im having problems with my buttercream at the moment as we are having a mini heatwave in the UK at the moment!!
Thanks hun! I guess this is just the stuff we have to deal with in the summer and ESPECIALLY during our monsoon season. I'll be sure not to take any orders in the future for flowers when the weather is like this... It was TRULY a pain in the rear! LOL! :0)
I love all your cakes, they are super awesome, I wanted to ask you where do you buy your Fondant and also the icing do you make it yourself or do you buy it already made???? Keep up the good work? De donde eres Laura?
