  • I'm not gonna stop doing that if I'm not downloading. One day I hope to have a job that pays well enough so that me and my entire family will never have to download again. Until then, I gotta do what I gotta do. I still go to the cinema, as that experience is truly unbeatable and can't be recreated digitally. I was quite happy to pay £5 (student discount) to see The Hangovet Part 2 and The Inbetweeners movie at the cinema, laughing along with other people.

  • I borrowed 2 series and the christmas special of Ricky Gervais' Extras on dvd for free from my college library, am I a pirate? I haven't bought them yet. Personally I believe that Love Film, Netflix and movie themed tv channels have it right. I really don't mind paying a little bit of money each month for a lot of movies, some of which I may buy on dvd/blu ray. Did you know that buying a pre owned dvd brings the same amount of money to the film company as downloading. How much? ZERO....

  • I meant to say I haven't YET purchased them.

  • 4:49 The Pirate Bay and internet.

    Really?

  • THERES A MOUSE AT 2:23! THUMBS UP!

  • WOOT PIRATE BAY

  • I was reading the pirate bay legal page and the one thing that keeps comming up and annoys me so much is all these lawyers quoting USA law! aka you are legally obliged to , under the law, by law, blah blash blah . What these people don't care about is that american law doesn't apply to sweeden! But thats typical of americans, they think they have jurastiction over the whole bloody world!

  • LOL! Do you think prices would go down if we all agreed to stop pirating? If online piracy completely lost tommarow, prices would prolly go up abit. I like me some entertainment but why did miley cyrus become famous? Because her dad was famous and it rippled into her. That is just an example but I hate people who are born into sucess. If I had one wish it would be that who you are at birth and who you know determines nothing in your personal wealth or who you become.

  • here is the truth: when the television started they broadcast everything for free, paid with advertising. free online games (not flash ones) is a more than a viable BUSINESS in asia, some western companies started copying that (battlefield heroes for example).

  • this documentary is pretty clear about what all this is about , is about business , is not about who's right or wrong is about losing money ,if you guys would be running a good business and then someone start to distribute your products without your agreement and then your usual custumers stop buying your products I dont know you guys but I'll be piss off too, anyway this is a real problem for the US goverment coz if hollywood goes down all the US the entire us economy woud be affected

  • Peer to peer sharing is not a crime, some people don't seem to understand this. Do I still go to movie and concerts? Yes, occasionally. Most people download media from TPB so they can enjoy it, not because they can get it for free.... I would be happy that people care enough to torrent or buy my work, regardless if they paid for it or not.

  • @simplygarnett was that.... sarcasm?

  • lets just hope that we the USA continue to try to tell every country to do, thatll help these companies bring down piracy

  • Maybe before they start complaining about file sharing, film and cinema companies should take a look at the prices they set on films themselves, I'd rather download a film at half-quality for free than spend £15 going to see it in the cinema.

  • @TranshumanCyborg which is where artists get the majority of their money, good show <3

  • piratebay FTW!!!!!!!!

  • LMAO, all the raid did was provide Grade-A free publicity for The Pirate Bay. More than doubling it's users.

  • I use torrents to download rare music, movies or games. If these big companies want to profit then they should sale their products at reasonable prices. Some of the price gouging in US is just sickening. The rest of my media I buy. I like to support artists, and people that work in film. They work hard to release product.

  • The bottom line is that both parties are selfish depending on the situation.

  • Not to mention that in most cases, the person who shared the file with said broke ass internet users, is a customer! A customer who shares what he has paid for with people who cannot pay. The company....loses.....nothing. However, if you are someone who can easily afford to buy something that you are downloading instead, I'd have to say that you are selfish in this case, and perhaps should contribute to the company that produces the product; because you CAN. It's just the nice thing to do

  • so true.

  • It's funny to me that the movie and music industry claim that they LOSE profits because of file sharing. This is extremely laughable. You can't lose something don't have. Furthermore, there is no evidence in the filesharing arena (unlike REAL pirating) that the downloaders would have bought the film/song, had they not recieved a chance to download it. The industry is living in a fantasy if they think broke ass filesharing net users would have bought their product. It is just selfishness.

  • By the way many albums can find on TPB sites, which are sold out or just simply not avaible

  • The US Elites trying to force their bogus arbitrary lawmaking on other soverign nations. the issue is that you cannot prevent the future from coming. the internet is here. the movie industry has earned billions of dollars on commersial advertising, pushing their products on having a monopoly on TV broadcasting. luckily young people have stopped watching TV and go to the internet for information. the most important thing now is to fight for NET NEUTRALITY. Look it up here on Youtube & Google!

  • why does everybody think pirating is ok?!

  • thats a good question..& people shouldnt B giving U thumbs down because of it.-the reasons are many and varied,i think alot of people feel justified in getting a free song or movie-esp if you think about cds costing 20 bux for 1 good song (we used to tape songs off the radio-this is the same) it IS stealing..and people who do it shouldnt expect to be able to argue around that..and when the time comes for the Gubment to take your rights over something else..theyd have no ethical leg to stand on.

  • that said...i do it all the time....

  • because copyright is the oil of the 21st century... you should ask the question the other way round, why does noone think pirating is ok? look into it, you will find copyright (on intellectual property) should be considered a crime..

  • Any rich bastard who wants to charge £10 for a CD is a fucking criminal. The Pirate Bay Kick Ass.

  • i hope TPB wins

  • They will - the prosecution has jack shit of a case against them and everyone knows it.

  • They lost.

  • Appeals! The Judge will be proven biased!

  • Hollywood got PAWNED XD

  • I am a full time music producer, with a family to support, and it's so hard to see thousands of people sharing my songs around and nobody actually buying the real things. Ofcourse it makes me happy that the music is being enjoyed, but my business will die without income. I'm not for or against filesharing, but it doesn't feel fair on people like me.If I was a hairdresser or gardener i'd be secure but because my work can be digitally duplicated I am suffering. Is that right? whats the solution?

  • Live performances. Recording a CD and expecting a huge pile of money from it is just ridiculous and wrong.

  • who said anything about expecting a huge pile of money? & ur live performaces comment is missing the point somewhat... ie, people who create computer games professionally can't do live performances, same goes for any other industry that suffers because of digital piracy, ie people enjoying their WORK for free... most people love file sharing and why wouldn't they- they get stuff for free! Damage is being done but nobody cares -unless it affects them personally.

  • What, are we talking about gaming now? Guys at the game companies found ways to charge players for their online services. And film companies can get revenue from cinemas. And if you can't find a way to adapt and benefit from your music, maybe you should become a gardener and let the real musicians do business. Afterall, some artists don't even care if their music is being posted on youtube or w/e, they think it's a good way to gain popularity, so they can attract bigger crowds to their concerts.

  • You're all correct, adapt or die, survival of the fittest, etc. I concede.

My only point is that something has to go back to the creators, some how, some way. I guess my issue is only with people who don't contribute anything back to society.... ps my business is surviving, we adapted years ago... interested to hear fresh business model ideas though, keep em coming ;)

    ps. any m

    :)

  • what you don't seems to realize that is most people wouldn't mind paying for the cd or dvd or whatever if they feel like treasuring it.

it is ridiculous to say business would die is the fault of piracy. I like Dark Knight, I like My chemcial Romance, so even knowing i can download them easily enough, im still happy to purchase the product and go to the concerts.

  • yes thats fine as long as everybody thinks like you. My guess is that future generations will not really care about owning the sleeves etc, and they will be more expectant to get everything for 'free'. Who knows.

anyway i conceded my post ages ago, i accept things are simply changing and we have to learn to adapt.

  • A lot of these musicians don't have the rights to their music anymore. It's mostly record labels that own them.

  • You need to be more creative in a business sense.

Set up a website and sell your music directly yourself. Cut out the middle man (if any).

You can also consider a "Street Performer Protocol" (see wikipedia for explanation.)

I also suggest releasing your content under a Creative Commons License. One version allows people to use the content and such, but if people want to use your content for commercial uses, they must go through you. (As such you can ask a fee of some sort for it).

  • ur argument kind of stumbled when you mentioned the word 'sell' and 'fee'... that's the whole point. If people are contributing back then great - everybody wins!

Give & take is the key, it's only a issue when people take take take and give nothing back.

Youtube now tracks music and has a royalty scheme in place, maybe the big torrent sites can go in a similar direction? It could still feel free to the end user...

  • Its not an argument, its proven suggestions that you can go research yourself.

My first suggestion was the exact model used by artists like Radiohead (late 2007) and Nine Inch Nails (early 2008). It was successful for them.

The SPP suggestion was used by a software company because they wanted a return for open sourcing their product. (Search for "Blender" animation software).

If you're only responding to defend your existing business model with excuses of futility, no one can help you.

  • Violating intellectual property (IP) is NOT theft. Its a fact that there is one law that deals with theft and another for IP violations. Don't try to combine the two to make it sound like the victim.

Copyright infringement is about violating the control of production. The problem is the potential loss of income. (Money that could have been made)...But that is NOT theft.

Secondly, the flaw in your analogy is that you're trying to compare a tangible product with an intangible one.

  • I can totally agree with you that it is not right for you to get income from the music that you produce, i respect it in that way...

But on the other hand, this whole filesharing done by torrent sites is a part of the revolution that is going to somehow change the business model for proberly the next century i suppose...

  • yeah you're right, this is just evolution. If I was a worked in a vinyl (record) pressing factory I would probably have been worried/annoyed when CDs came along. etc, life changes & business have to adapt or die. It's cool, keeps things interesting i guess :) But is still is painful to see my friends in the industry having to lay off staff etc, i won't deny that.

  • i think it is not bad to share file but if you start to ask people for money that's when it becomes piracy.

  • the only crime is the prices of films and cds in shops

    pirate bay rocks

  • Amen that

  • /agreed!

  • I know I'd never be downloading music if the prices hadn't shot up from 3 bucks a cd to 13 bucks... I mean wtf you seriously want me to pay 13 bucks for a little disc with mp3's on it?

  • god bless file-sharing.

  • Its annoying how the narrator is speaking Swedish and the interviewers are speaking English.

  • the "narrator voice" is from a swedish reporter, in a news report, he's not part of the Steal this film project.

  • Also, my music taste (heavy metal) is not popular where I live, so it's very hard to find someone who stocks CDs, where I can get it very quickly from the internet.

  • I'd much rather get a new CD off torrent or Rapidshare than pay in excess of £10 for a CD, when a CD costs a few pennies to produce. I do consider it a revolution and take pride in file sharing, it's impossible for the men in charge to track every single file sharer on the internet, it will never be possibile. The internet as pointless without pirated material, and I think the amount of people who do pirate material in some way or another massively outnumbers those who don't.

  • Maybe you forgot about the artist, recording producers, technicians, agents, marketing and all the other people involved in getting that CD made.

I definitely think the recording industries need to change, make things more accessible and much cheaper. But all out file sharing will eventually hurt the industries. Which hurts artists, actors, writers and all other people within the industry.

  • Hey im paying the artists $70+ to go to their concerts and buy their tshirts. that is the majority of an artists profit anyways.

  • Aguaresss,

google for wired some like it hot

Yes, it looks true! Most true! :)

If piracy means using the creative property of others without their permission, then the history of the content industry is a history of piracy. Every important sector of big media today - film, music, radio, and cable TV - was born of a kind of piracy. The consistent story is how each generation welcomes the pirates from the last.

  • Edison, in turn, went on to invent filmmaking, and demanded a licensing fee from those making movies with his technology. This caused a band of filmmaking pirates, including a man named William, to flee New York for the then still wild West, where they thrived, unlicensed, until Edison's patents expired. These pirates continue to operate there, albeit legally now, in the town they founded: Hollywood. William's last name? Fox.

    Amazing fact isn't it....LOL, LOL

    With love, from Great Britain.

  • true ?

  • Pure gold!

  • I'ts very simple. They got themselves into this mess by charging unreasonable rates for entertainment. I mean, 25 bucks for a cd and 10 bucks to get into a movie theater? It is hard enough to survive in this economy and forget about having some fun. I think they raped us long enough, and if they were reasonable buisness people with an ounce of honestey themselves, this never would have been such a problem.

  • Someone give his man a handshake!

    I totally agree

  • i fourth that.

its the same with everything: gas, food, housing, cars, and what is the the min. wage $6.50!!!

  • Ill stop downloading movies when the actors stop buying mansions and castle size swimming pools. They deserve no more then everyone else. As for games i only buy the games that really stand out!

  • we get into a communism debate here... where do we draw the line? that's what really needs to be focused on.

  • okay, they might deserve more then the average Joe who make a living by selling tacos or something like that. But they sure AS HELL dont need to become filthy rich just by making a single lackluster movie.

  • As for the music biz...I am all for the internet taking over. People argue small bands go unrecognized but seriously - 90 percent of people find out about bands they like through the internet these days. Its now a matter of if they actually have talent or not. Internet word of mouth can go a long way. And thank god for that, coz radioplay sucks these days.

  • No matter how much people bitch about it, internet file sharing is here to stay. Get over it already.

The funny thing is no one in the porn industry is complaining - pron gets "pirated" too. XD

  • guys please seed

  • hahaha

  • lets all just keep on fucking downloading for free i have no money to buy genuine anything goes when it comes to saving money

  • They should operate Pirate Bay from Iran, Come and pressure us motherf***ers!!

  • "We are coming back on line..if you stop calling me" LMAO!!

  • Rasmus get that fucking cyst taken care of. I can't stand people with massive skin tags and cysts which are so easily removed nowadays, especially when you country has free health care.

  • "I THINK IT'S A RAPE AGAINST THE SWEDISH LAW."

    klockrent ;)

  • And to add one more point - money is virtual, only money which is invested in sustainable development and renewable technologies are in the benefit of the biosphere, including human. We should force corporations to modernise or die out, because the most important resource in human resource.

  • Most of movies produced are not worth watching, most music produced is not worth listening. I've erased countless of MP3 after download, because most of it is utter s**t. I force myself to watch movies, and I can say that in ~2000 movies I've seen up to now, at least 60% was also complete s**t and waste of time. The only advantage is learning the language.

  • Corporations try to sell us the moral point. That is, how will people get insanely rich under such a system? The answer is, they won't (except for large scale performances). Of course, what does a corporation like sony (look up sony rootkit) think it is doing trying to talk about the morality of the situation. Corporations aren't people and don't have feelings; the people owning corporations can sell their stock.

  • Exactly, a corporation isn't a person, it is a pile of money to which people pledge their allegiance.

No, I'm not a communist, I'm a socialist, get it right.

And we need to entirely redo all IP laws.

  • Fuck the Mpaa...why don't you send some crazy islamists to think mpaa is satan so we can get rid of those pathetic assclowns?

  • great idea!

  • Yeah makni01 and thats the way we like it. Why feel sorry for the rich capitalists pigs. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer is that the way you want it?

  • if i download a movie and its GOOD then i buy it. if i download it and it sucks i didnt support a bad movie maker.

  • exactly

  • You are all a bunch of communists

  • My thoughts exactly. But i'll bet they dont mind making a buck themselves...

  • damn right! POWER TO THE PROLES!

  • Jesus was a communist. Dumb American.

  • Let's all stop talking about stealing, and start talking about copyright infringement. Very different things. While I appreciate these guys efforts to make this documentary, the title (pop culture reference aside) only spreads misinformation.

  • I would just like to say that - in general - Swedish people have bad teeth

  • Id pay mabe a few dollars for a dvd, but most of hollywood is crap not worth buying at all.

  • if its on the internet free for download, its fair game in my eyes

  • A few bands like Radiohead, Saul Williams, and Trent Reznor have given away free albums online while accepting donations. I think the movie biz should follow their lead. The theaters and movie biz will never go out of business, they will only be forced to re-evaluate the business plan and possibly be also forced to earn less but at least it would be a reasonable profit rather than ridiculous.

  • Its all just greed on both sides. the corporations are just screwing things over for more money. All these big budget hollywood movies...its just stupid how they blow like hundreds of millions on five star hotels and gourmet catering not to mention grossly overpaid actors salaries.

  • Shyamalv, you obviously did not watch the movie or understood what the entire point of their effort was for. It's ignorant, unintelligent folks as yourself who continue to badmouth and speak about topics such as this misinforming the public.

  • The fact that you think its unintelligent to say my point of you view shows where you are coming from.

  • Try and stop us, and while your at it learn a thing or two about filesharing so you won't be an ignorant nay-sayer. Just because you got screwed and got a virus while getting your porn fix doesn't mean you should go around cussing and whatnot.

Then again Hollywood is acting just like oil companies do with some new superclean hybrid or EV, by warping public knowledge and getting people to forget who the real criminals are.

  • Not really dude. I am competent enough to know whats a virus and whats not. Maybe you were bitten bad while trying to access your daily dose of gay incest porno

And I dont think these guys who run pirate bay are criminals nor am interested in "stopping" anyone. I just think you gotta pay for stuff thats not yours if you want it.

Its like this, just because walmart makes a ton of money you dont run in and steal stuff(well maybe you do, most people think this is wrong)

  • Ah I see, keep those poor actors' paychecks up so they can feed their families, and god knows George Lucas is suffering terribly from all this. Oh and no one can forget about all of those singers! Just watch one episode of "Cribs" and you will feel utter pity for their barbaric lifestyle.

  • So tell me steeler88, you moron, if the world was full of pirates, would there be anything left to steal? Who knows, because no one would want to make anything if they aren't getting payment for it, since some damn pirate thinks he can steal a farmer's hard work of vegetables, while the farmer gets nothing. You're like a fucking virus to humanity. There will be nothing left.

  • Crazy youtube and their post restrictions...heres the second part of my rant

Sure some of it's stealing, much of it wrong, but we're basically slaves to the industry, and (if I may reuse my oil analogy) I don't want to end up paying monumental prices for some rich guy in Beverly Hills any more than we like to keep some fat Cheney-esque guy on his diet of caviar

If I could steal gasoline, I would, and anyone who calls that wrong and immoral can go suck a brick

  • now thats just dont make no sense now hear you

  • Your government has delude you into thinking that this is a moral issue when the entire goal is to protect FUTURE earnings for people who don't need. The y did EXACTLY the same thing to make generation after generation believe that marijuana is a moral issue and it isn't either. The powers that be want everyone to think the same so that they can keep the money in their control. That is the ENTIRETY of the issue.

  • Who the hell are you to decide who needs more money or who should get more money? If I make a million bucks and I work to make a billion who the hell are you to tell me I dont have the right to.

  • I AGREE WITH SHYAMALV, these fuckhead pirates like steeler88 think they can tell everyone how much and how much not to make, and then cry ' i don't want to pay for a product to an already rich person, therefore i steal, i do what i want without going to jail ' like a fucking hypocrite.
