Listening to Sean singing Carrickfergus brought back memories of a concert that
I organised in the early '70s in my own home-town. Sean sang Carrickfergus most
beautifully asonly he can. Billa O'Connell, John O'Shae and a young, blind
accordianist by the name of Scannell. (Icannot remember his first name) also took part but Sean's singing was unbelievable. May he keep that voice well
I opened this video and the first thing I thought was, this is not the greatest hairstyle in the world. SImultaneously I thought that this being YouTube and the image obsessed times we live someone will have commented on it already. And they did, step forward spikeesnoop and regale us with more of your witty badinage why don't you.
Seán O'Se became the voice of O Riada's ensemble, which also included Paddy Moloney and other musicians who soon afterward formed the Chieftains, moving Irish music onto the world stage. O'Se's renditions of classic ballads like Carrickfergus are known and loved throughout Ireland and today he continues an active schedule of performing and recording. He is an Irish treasure!
ó, níor éisteas ar an réamhrá roimhe seo... bhuel, dar leis an CD, is é Ó Riada údar an cheoil.... ach is dócha go déarfaí é sin mar is leisean an CD :P
Tá an t-ámhrán seo ar an CD 'Ó Riada sa Gaiety' darb ainm 'Do Bhí Bean Uasal' - tá Seán Ó Sé ag canadh ar ndóigh. Scríobhadh 'melody composed by Seán Ó Riada; inspiration taken from a traditional tune' air. Chuala mé go bhfuil tréithe 'amhráin na ndaoine' (saghas seanfhilíocht) le fáil sna focail, ach nílim cinnte gur cuimhin liom é sin go ceart.
Any one have the lyrics as gaeilge? I agree with Martin Shaw, it does fit the melody a bit better as gaeilge, having said that I tried to translate Black is The Colour into Irish and that didn't really fit the tune.

Very credible, in fact. - Sometimes I wonder if O'Riada wasn't just O'Carolan reincarnated.

I do not care how miserable he was. He is most under-rated. A wonderful voice. Thanks for posting

Sean was my headmaster back in Cork - at Cathedral Road, and later St Mary's in Knocknaheeny.
Fine oul fella! (Miserable bastard though!)

So, the music for Carrickfergus may have been composed by Sean O`Riada. What a man.

It's more sincere in gaelic...
The tune is not faltered or marginalised by language (english)..
Tears to my eyes!
