yep this is a song that was just an idea at first as all songs are and my brother in law started to work on it with my sister Matraca in mind. Jeff was super excited to have it gain recognition and get some writing credits and awards especially since my sister really is the one that is the songwriter. I am mentored by my big sister and she and I look at songwriting as our own personal therapy. I am just so blessed to be among some super talented gene pool yall. Hey let's all go swimming
Heard the Dirt Band do this in concert a few days ago. Bobby Carter, their keyboardist sang lead. When I heard the Dirt Band do this song, it was like I'd never heard it before. The Christian group Selah also has a great version with beautiful, tight harmonies.
@nickz777 Pretty sure it's Bob Carpenter who plays keyboard and accordion among other things in Nitty Gritty Dirt Band that sang it on the "acoustic" album from 1994.
@onetruemelody0540 I absolutely LOVE Jamie Hanna....I have his CD Hanna-McEuen.....I know he is touring currently with G. Allen Band.....wish Jamie would put out his own CD....I LOVE Jamie's voice......
@JONROSE44 ya me too!! jamie is now working with gary allan and johnathan is working solo but just signed a record deal. his new songs are amazing :) so excited. gotta buy johnathan's cd!! it's amazing
Jeff Hanna's song The Lowlands is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard - his work with the Dirt Band is amazing!!! Love his version of this song as well.
often referd to by jeff hanna as "there best friends" rascle flats, ruined this soung. since NGDB didnt relase this as a single, they get litle or no money for Flatts version.
no they did not. not in my opinion anyways. you know...(this part of my comments is NOT directed at you...please don't take it as a shot at you...it's not inteded that way) i REALLY hate it when people say a particular person or group "ruined" a song. why can't they just say they didn't do it as well as other such person or group?
Thank so much for posting this! When I saw the NGDB in concert, Jeff thanked Rascal Flatts for recording this as it put plenty of money in his pocket. A song this great needs to be reinterpreted by great musicians.
Awesome!

I can't stand Rascal Flatts, but have always loved this song. Had no idea who wrote it, but I far prefer his rendition of it. Great stuff.

One of Jeffrey's very best. I love the way Bob sings it, but I've always wanted to hear Jeff interpret it, since he wrote it.
I strongly suspect he wrote it about the lady sitting next to him (his wife), and he conveys a great deal of emotion through the song.
God bless you, Jeffrey.

I 1st heard this song on NGDB's acoustic album. I like it much better than the Rascal Flatt version.
