David. GOOD LORD. and all of you who think you can hit that note....sorry but you arent anything compared to David. So why try to brag?? GVB is amazing. Nothing short of amazing
I love how Gaither reaches back & brings home to us these ol' gospel spirituals!! This song was written & composed by Lucy Smith Collier, known as "Little Lucy Smith, of The Roberta Martin Singers. Sister Smith-Collier recently went home to be with our Lord, Sept. 19, 2010. Image her Joy in knowing that her songs of praises are still being sung & enjoyed even today. RIP
Now after hearing that statement, try to process this. Can any other male singer hit a C#5 and sustain in for 12 secs in FULL voice 3 times in a row???
Melissa, isn't there a version of this by the whole homkecomming group in which David is sitting by himself but comes in with his note holding and gets all kinds of reactions from the other singers??? If you have it please let me know which DVD it's on and post it.... Thanks
@dadadadasad can you listen to someone singing and tell what key they are singing in? if so can you look for get up get ready from the gold city right here on youtube and tell me what key that tenor sings in. the note was unreal. it was higher than all of david's notes. i would just like an experts opinion in this matter.

looorrdd! i tried that ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhh....i failed. btw. im a girl. lol, imma leave it to the professional. but EVERYTIME i hear this song i just have to throw a mini praise party! lol
My Favorite,I loved David at time,he changed so much in the next few years, hardly looks the same....weight,hair,teeth,oh well thabnkd GOD the voice never changed AMEN
ya, no falsetto with david. if there is ever something that sounds like falsetto with him, its usually a soft note and he blends AMAZINGLY well with his chest voice. no breaks at all, ever lol
but thats what u get with a degree in vocal performance. :)
but ya, if its not soft, he just belts it and its most certainly not falsetto
david is able to hit these notes because like all the great tenors like pavarotti, Corelli, Bjorling etc he has figured out the coordination of thinning the vocal folds. He has a developed head voice but still connects to a thread of chest throughout the registers. . What I love about David's voice compared to others is that he has the ability to sing his high notes and all notes in his range like a pop singer or an opera singer! his high c especially early on is operatic
This combo of the Gaither Vocal Band with Bill, Mark, Guy and David is my favorite of all the combos there have been. Love their blend and camaraderie. Love each of them individually but together they are just unbelievable.
yup, a good tenor has 2 voices. one is the chest and "head" voice mixed, and then the "falsetto" that people usually use when mocking someone else. the head voice is similar to falsetto, but not the same, and doesnt break from the chest voice. a trained tenor can sing in chest and "head" voice all day long (assuming they warmed up well before trying to do so), there is also good resonance (less breath more sound) in a trained voice, so holding a note for 10 seconds is NOTHING. haha
I know for a fact that it took practice and he would've had to take a deep breath before hitting that high of a note for that long...I couldn't do that....KUDOS to David for being able to do that!
its all in how you breathe....breathe from your diaphragm and sing from the mask voice to hit high notes at a full voice
breathing from the diaphragm gives you more air and singing from the mask voice allows for a more full sounding voice which I think David does excellently check out his O Holy Night video simply amazing!
I think Jake, Howard, Vestal, George, Glenn and Anthony all have their own Convention. I have a ticket but i can't read the date. Can't wait to hear them.
I'm gonna miss Guy...too bad he didn't stick around just a bit longer to sing w/ David, again...I loved hearing those two together...but, I am looking forward to his new solo album!
David Phelps: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, Oh my LORD what a time. He`s my Hero
Praise the Lord! I love this group....They have such a talent. It is great to see a group with this much talent using it to further God's kingdom. They could make much more money as secular artists but they choose to use their talents for God's glory!
truly amazing :) i believe the note is very impressive yes..but the most impressive thing is that he does it in full voice..thats so impossibly hard haha..im still in high school and i was just chosen the number 1 bass 2 in my district and im happy with what God blessed me with..but man i wish i had that voice!

David Phelps has an incredible range, and an incredibly tuned falsetto, one of the most amazing falsetto's i have ever heard in my life.
What makes you think that? The tone, volume and sheer force of the note would suggest it was a mixed voice (full). Besides...there is no way something that timbre-ful and strong is falsetto. If you watch David performing 'O love that will not let me go', you'll get a better idea of his falsetto style
yeah, I can hold that for as long as he does in falsetto, but I can't even hit it in full voice. No doubt about it, David is on a level above any gospel tenors I've heard.
Before my voice finally changed all the way, it was pretty easy to hit that note but not hold it for that long lol. Although i could still do it but not anywhere near good as that. Now that i'm a baritone i wonder how i ever did that kind of stuff. 2 thumbs up for David!
@hoover4000 ya david definately has the voice for this stuff. lol. it's being able to sing it full voice and hold it without killing it =). definately shows you a vocal performance degree =P
@RandomZydeco I can hit it and hold it that long in full voice, but my voice has to be completely warmed up. After I do it though, i have to sing some lower pitch songs to let my voice rest. If I do No More Night, then These are They back to back, my voice starts to sway a little.
Ernie Haase sounds TERRIBLE when he does his little 'oooooooooo' on the 'Together' version... not even CLOSE. David Phelps IS the man... why oh why did he leave??
I'm comforted with the fact that others have been in awe with the voice of David Phelps...
I was amazed at this voice back in 1988 when I sang in the Texas All-State Choir and we were singing an a cappella german piece and at the end I heard someone singing a clear and powerful Tenor 1 pitch unlike anything I had ever heard...I turned around to see who was singing it but wasn't sure who it was...later that afternoon I was told it was a guy named David Phelps. Something you don't forget...
oh, that's why he's so amazing! haha. the texas all-state choir is the best in the country currently, and probably was back then too. i just got back from my iowa all-state concert...great music.
Why are Christian singers on here putting people's comments down because they like David Phelps. Wow! Go ahead and lift yourself because that is all the praise you are going to receive.
I am in a quartet, and we cover alot of GVB stuff. I am the tenor, and I am able to hit his notes full-voiced. It is not as difficult as you all make it sound. I have trained my voice, and have put alot of work into what God has blessed me with. Believe me it can be done.
mrcathey...if you could hit those notes the way David did...you'd be plastered all over youtube. I don't even see any of your quartet videos under your account??? If you have any, post 'em. We'd love to here you cover some of these songs.
yea and my dog can too.. but the question is.. can you do it with his POWER and VOLUME... probably not haha most of the angels might have trouble with that.. ohman.. just imagine what his voice will be like in heaven =D
I can sing it.... I have been a singer for 37 years!!!!!!!!!!!! I know the difference between a falsetto.... David Phelps isnt the only one is the world that can sing !!!!!!!!!!!
mrcathey7 and mikaelakingsley are just incredibly jealous!!! You guys need to stop!!! David is an amazing singer. So is Guy and that is the truth. Deal with it, if you cannot keep your negative comments to yourself.
There is a difference between being able to hold it, and being able to sing it full voiced (i.e. without falsetto). You may be able to sing that note in falsetto, the note itself is not all that difficult to sing, but I highly doubt you can sing this full voiced...
Well its very easy to us to say we can reach that note and sustain it that long , but your also not taking in the fact that he is singing in the next to Guy and Mark on a live video being recorded and in front of say 4000 people .try doing that!
David's note is a C#(5) and he holds each one about 12 seconds...that's 36 seconds total of sustaining a C#(5) full voice in one song. Simply the best.
I'm not even going to try that; Guy sings too high for me, forget even trying what David does. Maybe I should be watching George Younce videos instead :p

As the Bass section leader in my college chorale, and a tenor vocal student, i am gonna go with you guys and say i wish i could do that lol... but the belief that this is in complete full voice, is not completely accurate. Yay, I can hold the note too, lol. Thanks for posting this great song.

He holds it for 12.5 seconds of something. That's nothing when you think he holds the ME in "Hide Thou Me" for 16 seconds!! Go David!!

I'm not even going to try that; Guy sings too high for me, forget even trying what David does. Maybe I should be watching George Younce videos instead :p
