  • First REM song ever saw on Rage in 1989 - blew me away with how cool they were...couldnt have had a better introduction to them

  • 2:41 Bill and Peter's reaction's always have me wetting myself with laughter, Priceless.

  • it's an acoutrement.

  • always loved this song! damn what a good band they are.

  • best rem video ever!!!!!!

  • the athens drive-in...now ga. square mall....the peach stand in hoppidy hooper ville....

  • "Drive to Myrtle Beach, and the peach stands and landscape looks just like the video'

  • classic

  • anouncer= fail. can get here from there... naming fail

  • Thanks for posting. Were the top band in the world at one time IMO.

  • Guitar appear The Smiths .. :) Fantastic song.

  • @JrAnjo1 The Smiths guitar appear like REM :)

  • They are not from Philomath; that is a small town near Athens....probably a good place to cruise. Bill & Mike were living in Macon when they met, and then they moved to Athens to go to school. Michael Stipe was from all over, but living in Athens at the time of REM getting together. Buck was from California, but working in Athens when he met Stipe.

  • Philomath is a town in georgia where they are from, that is why they thank ray charles because he is from georgia, not exactly sure but that is what i read

  • Mister City-Wide!

  • Agreed Shelley! Mike Mills is a very underrated bass player. And they sure miss Bill Berry.

  • Some excellent bass by Mike Mills in this song. This song really shows what a strong bassist he is..

  • @shelleyinthecity and the guitar !!! so funky :)

  • I wonder why but mysteriously I found this video funny.lol

  • So did the band. They said it was their first use of the new blue-screen tech, so they wanted to experiment and made this goofy vid.

  • U68.....in CT back in the eighties b4 we had cable....

  • LOVE THIS SONG FUCK YES

  • me too i always really liked this song

i used to listen to philadelphia best of and some of the other stuff and even monster while i was playing ultima underworld in 1995.

I had vivid memories, good ones at that.

  • I'm glad they put the words underneath, I never knew what 90% of them were; other than "Can't get there from here".

  • @bfnputz There's not much to see in Philomath.

  • a lot more than there is in texas.

  • Other than the most diverse state topography wise than any other. Wait....Dallas is shitter than ATL;-) Otherwise...you made dumb points;-)

  • Just some southern boyz takin' the mickey out of the world and most if not all of ya'll

Y ademas el video hecho totalmente "en casa"

  • Sadly they seem to have lost the sense of humour over the years.

  • Its called responsibility.

  • Ray is Ray Charles.

  • I heard this song in maybe 1987? I've been a huge REM fan since 1985 (does that make me feel old???) AND I STILL DON"T KNWO WHO "ray" IS?? At the end of the song he says, "thank you Ray" WHO IS RAY?

  • Who's the weirdo announcing the song at the beginning?

    Can't get HERE from THERE?

Great video besides the bloody blunder.

    BleuBlancoFilms rules!

  • Thank You Ray

  • Throw your troubles out the door. Nice three on the tree psychedlic drive they took. History/Culture should be kind to them. Gentlemen-simplify-exemplify the way of truth and gardening.

  • The lyrics are "Throw your trolls out the door", not troubles.

  • Along with "Losing My Religion," this is one of R.E.M.'s GREATEST songs! TIMELESS!

  • I've been to Philomath, I know the secrets.

  • What's the secret?!!? Whaaaat!?!

  • What? Whatever...this is it.

  • This song reminds me of driving around in the hills and mountains around Benton, TN (home of the 1996 Olympics whitewater sports & that's it!) Growing up backwoods, I came to R.E.M. late - but Eponymous was a great intro and I saw them at Thompson-Boling Arena (Knoxville) in '89. Got to see Pylon open! I've seen em 7 times since then, but each one harkens back to that first time. I love all records before Reveal and LOVE Accelerate too, have all the LPs! Lakewood 2008 was great. Bill was there!

  • if only music videos were still like this...hell yeah

  • I remembered this song by R.E.M., back when I was 4 years old.

  • ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg ggggggggggggg

  • Why Does Stipe Wear a Hat thru the whole video? Is it because of his little "episdoe" during the recording of "fables" Where he shaved his head so people that were used seeing his hair (at the time) didn't criticize him? Or was the hat a fashion statement? He also wears a hat during the "Driver 8" Video.

  • Knowing Stipe, he's probably only wearing a hat just to be wearing a hat.

  • thats why I wear a hat.

  • @supremetaco Why else would you wear a hat?

  • There used to be drive in movie theater where the Georgia Mall now stands.

  • I agree, REM amazing band, but this song is just SOOO freakin' awesome.

  • This is my favorite R.E.M. song ever!

  • On this one, they sorta moved away from their earlier alternative rock-type sound. This song sounds a lot like blues.

  • damn this is cool!

  • Still has to be one of my favourite REM songs, a timeless one!

  • kinda sounds like the chili peppers- cept for the vocals, but its sounds really awesome

  • @ 2:13... his father must be Bert from Sesame Street.

  • One of the craziest videos released by this legendary band... It's so beautiful to see how happy they were all together!

This was one of the very first videos of R.E.M. I happened to see on tv and when I was a little girl I always had a lot of fun watching them dancing and doing crazy things in their cars... it was so unreal and magic! :)

  • Im very young but i still agree with those of you that love this album, it's very solid yet mysterious

  • The best damn thing to ever come out of Georgia!

  • I like Bill's dance moves at 3:12! Classic :D

  • This song reminds me of when I used to smoke crack. Those were the good ol days!!

  • Awesome song. Brings back memories!!

  • Yes, back in the day when a song was a song and a video was a video...I want my MTV BACK!!!!!!

  • now its all about tapping "dat" ass, living in a house where everyone hates/sleeps with eachother and dating/screwing someone you dont even know for cash :*(

  • this song rocks..TRUE REM

  • This is my favourite R.E.M. song. Bill Berry sure knew how to lay down a solid disco beat!

  • This is my favorite R.E.M. video. I have it on the When The Light Is Mine DVD. I love that DVD. It's R.E.M.'s best years.

  • I loved R.E.M.'s first three albums so much (and Chronic Town). I had tickets to see them when Fables came out, and my parents wouldn't let me go because I just started a job at Domino's Pizza. What a mistake!!! I saw them in New York when Monster was out, but it wasn't the same.

  • Now there's a great story! I lived sooo close, but was unfortunately going through the Contemporary Christian phase - haven't listened to Larnell Harris since then! Ugh.

  • when i was little this was my fav video from rem...other than radio song :D

  • I think philomath is a town in georgia near athens...it might not exist anymore.

  • Philomath is about 45 m. east of Athens. Take 78 (the Lexington road) out of town going east. Go past Arnoldsville & through Lexington, bear r. onto GA. 77 (the Union Point road) heading s. and you'll be there in about twenty minutes.

  • Yeah, but you can't get there from here.

  • Comment removed

  • GA is US postal abbreviation for Georgia

    (where the members are from)

  • jaseybase - philomath is a lover of learning, and it's also a City in Oregon (gotta love that wikipedia)

  • is it philomath?? and if so can anyone enlighten me as I have been wondering since day one!! many thanks all!

  • ha ha... the woman at the start says CAN'T GET HERE FROM THERE

  • who is it at the start climbing over the hay... its not REM is it...

  • REMK9,

The guy closest to the camera at the beginning is probably Jeffeson Holt. I can't tell from this youtube version who the guy in the back is. I may look at the DVD when I get home and see if I can figure it out.

  • One of the best REM songs !

Failed to reach top Billboard, but... who care about this?

  • I!!

  • philomath is where I go uhh uhh

  • Great and very funny video. They have fun in this time.

  • I love the German VJ mis-introducing it as "Can't Get Here From There".... heheh

  • Yes, by MER band !!

    LOL !!!

  • stipe voice look like mick jagger voice at some moments in this song :)

  • My favorite track from fables....damn fine band!

  • great great great song!!!

  • " When I reach old 220 going to myrtle beach you see , peach stands, sandy soil, they have a love of going to the coast, as much as when they have arrived. LOVE THIS

  • This is the song that remind me the most of my best time with friends at university..

  • "Fables Of The Reconstruction" was by and large uneven- but this was one of the best tracks on it!

  • Wow. I hadn't seen this since I was 17. This brings me wayyyyyy back!

    Thanks for the memories :)

  • Damn that was original ... R.E.M. ROCKS!
