They are not from Philomath; that is a small town near Athens....probably a good place to cruise. Bill & Mike were living in Macon when they met, and then they moved to Athens to go to school. Michael Stipe was from all over, but living in Athens at the time of REM getting together. Buck was from California, but working in Athens when he met Stipe.
Philomath is a town in georgia where they are from, that is why they thank ray charles because he is from georgia, not exactly sure but that is what i read
I heard this song in maybe 1987? I've been a huge REM fan since 1985 (does that make me feel old???) AND I STILL DON"T KNWO WHO "ray" IS?? At the end of the song he says, "thank you Ray" WHO IS RAY?
Throw your troubles out the door. Nice three on the tree psychedlic drive they took. History/Culture should be kind to them. Gentlemen-simplify-exemplify the way of truth and gardening.
This song reminds me of driving around in the hills and mountains around Benton, TN (home of the 1996 Olympics whitewater sports & that's it!) Growing up backwoods, I came to R.E.M. late - but Eponymous was a great intro and I saw them at Thompson-Boling Arena (Knoxville) in '89. Got to see Pylon open! I've seen em 7 times since then, but each one harkens back to that first time. I love all records before Reveal and LOVE Accelerate too, have all the LPs! Lakewood 2008 was great. Bill was there!
Why Does Stipe Wear a Hat thru the whole video? Is it because of his little "episdoe" during the recording of "fables" Where he shaved his head so people that were used seeing his hair (at the time) didn't criticize him? Or was the hat a fashion statement? He also wears a hat during the "Driver 8" Video.
One of the craziest videos released by this legendary band... It's so beautiful to see how happy they were all together!
This was one of the very first videos of R.E.M. I happened to see on tv and when I was a little girl I always had a lot of fun watching them dancing and doing crazy things in their cars... it was so unreal and magic! :)
now its all about tapping "dat" ass, living in a house where everyone hates/sleeps with eachother and dating/screwing someone you dont even know for cash :*(
I loved R.E.M.'s first three albums so much (and Chronic Town). I had tickets to see them when Fables came out, and my parents wouldn't let me go because I just started a job at Domino's Pizza. What a mistake!!! I saw them in New York when Monster was out, but it wasn't the same.
Now there's a great story! I lived sooo close, but was unfortunately going through the Contemporary Christian phase - haven't listened to Larnell Harris since then! Ugh.
Philomath is about 45 m. east of Athens. Take 78 (the Lexington road) out of town going east. Go past Arnoldsville & through Lexington, bear r. onto GA. 77 (the Union Point road) heading s. and you'll be there in about twenty minutes.
The guy closest to the camera at the beginning is probably Jeffeson Holt. I can't tell from this youtube version who the guy in the back is. I may look at the DVD when I get home and see if I can figure it out.
" When I reach old 220 going to myrtle beach you see , peach stands, sandy soil, they have a love of going to the coast, as much as when they have arrived. LOVE THIS

Agreed Shelley! Mike Mills is a very underrated bass player. And they sure miss Bill Berry.

So did the band. They said it was their first use of the new blue-screen tech, so they wanted to experiment and made this goofy vid.
