  • OMG, love this

  • John, you, among others, have helped guide me through the boundries of hell. Your music is in my soul. For that, I thank you very much

  • im related to john prine

  • @mgprine Me, too.

  • @mosescotton Not really. I'm just kidding.

  • This is awesome...someone just sent me a song by John Prine who I had heard of but never listened to until now..he is a fantastic writer and I look forward to hearing all his songs. I write and put myself into the place of the character in the song and write from their perspective and think he does too....I had this VERY song in mind but could never get it right....he did!! I thought of my mother when writing it, and wonder who he thought of....fantasy and reality....beautiful!!!

  • by the way thanks a million for uploading this!!!

  • ok, possibly the most epic video on youtube. wonderful intro to a beautiful song written by the man himself. one of the best writers of all time for sure and this video does a great job of capturing the emotion and expression his music describes. love you john cant wait to see ya in telluride this summer! please do this song!!!

  • BEautiful song. :)

  • My friend Genevieve used to sing this song for me and play my guitar when I lived in North Carolina two winters ago. She sang it like she lived it and I know why. I thank her for leading me to the knowledge of this artist and this song.

  • my father was the only man i knew that looked good in aviator sunglasses till i found prine!!!

  • OMG...You're he new Kermit. He played the same sont in the same swamp.

  • he's a hardcore, guerilla, original, classic!!! ty for the post

  • Thats my families song. John is my cousin. Rosa maybel smith was my grandmother. One day I hope to meet him. His music is amazing . John is a rare talent . A diamond in the ruff. Love you my music man. Lora Annette Taylor Fielder

  • John prine is an orginal. There is only one John Prine.

  • God bless John Prine for writing this song.

  • My life...4 now

  • John is such an incredible talent, I can listen to him day after day and never get tired of the music.

  • Dave does such a better version

  • @UserName0o03 DAVE WHO????

  • @terrible714 Dave Matthews..

  • @UserName0o03 Dave does a more "commercial" version acceptable to people who consume music like cotton candy; John does a version which is pure of heart and natural. Dave is a hack(look it up); John is an artist.

  • @desirefirst dave is not a hack hes actually a very talented singer writer and guitarist.. dmb actually has a very supportive fan base. dmb is not in any way a cotton candy band so overall that was an ignorant comment. ive said my peace

  • an exceptional song. Love it.

  • The story of my life...

  • Hard way?

  • A truly magic video thanks

  • I don't know whether to cry at the tune or smile at the way that only John Prine can sing this song.....I thank God that my husband intruduced me to Mr. Prine's wonderous talents 30 yrs ago....he never goes old.

  • I've always love this song!! Hard way to go applies even today!!!!!!!

  • I love this song.

  • Needs to work on his vocal phrasing.

  • @BlurnGanston I assume you're trolling but if not, dude, he wrote the song, he can "phrase" it however he wants

  • @fractuss I agree and that is the charm of Mr Prine's treatment of his song in this video - a very desperate song.

  • John Prine has been a major influence on the careers of some of the greatest singer/ songwriters to ever lift their voice or strum a string. He's a musical God, with Dylan and Springsteen.

  • this is ridiculously phenomenal...awesome...

  • he is so good, love this song such a talented songsmith

  • This may be the most magical song ever written. My eyes moisten just thinking about it and I cry when I hear it. Made haunting by..... John Prine! Bonnie may sing it nicely, sing it nicely with John, but the magic must be attributed to John.

  • @joelslot You are right about the magic. Prine is truly a lyrical magician in the same vein as Dylan.

  • @joelslot check out Susan Tedeschi's version

  • A beautiful, wistful song, penned by a genius and made haunting by Bonnie Raitt.

  • Thanks Paul.

  • you could literally play anything and i would just love it

  • i can not believe this can take me away from all my troubles simply beautiful

  • I have loved this song from time to time. It has helped me with so many situations in my relationships with "my prince charmings". I passed through Montgomery for the first time this week. We were backed up on the highway for some time due to a tragic car wreck. This song paced through my head , along with prayers so many times. Just wish I could of sent them an angel through that time for those people. Peace.

  • Very very nice.

  • most songwriters wish they were as good as John Prine and none are

  • amazing video

  • actually, in my head, I always saw her as being in her 70s....or 80s

  • Just gorgeous! Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi cover it beautifully. John Prine & Bonnie Raitt together singing this makes me tear up everytime!

  • @w00dbeck

damn straight...they do it awesome together!!!!!....

  • The chords are something like this

    Verse G C and D

    Chorus G F and C with a quick D at the end

  • An "Angel from Montgomery" refers to a pardon for a prison sentence from the governor. It is also used to refer to a last minute pardon from the death sentence. The phrase originated in Alabama where the capital is Montgomery. The way John puts it the woman is living in her own self made prison that she can't escape from, hence she needs a pardon (the angel from Montgomery).

  • @28fireflies Your explanation taught me something, thanks. Been loving this song more than 30 years now and never knew about a reference to a pardon . Just lays ol' John's songwriting genius right on the table, doesn't it !!

  • Lisa Fraser does a great version of this song. It is on Youtube too.

  • John------I;ve loved your for 40 years!!!!!!!!!!

  • beautiful.

thanks my friend across the pond.

  • @RebelSupertramp Verse: D and G and A. Chorus: D and C and G. That's it, I think.

  • always keeps being good!!!!!

  • omg i´m 15 and my music is only deathcore ...but i play acustic guitarre and i just love that =0 <3

  • Almost Cryed The First Time i Heard This Song Best Song Ever

  • just a free rambling man..

  • Can someone get John & Kris together??

  • JOHN PRINE = master of the Universal as we knowed it

  • I think he's fuked up, just sayin...but good song.. *shrugs shoulder

  • This may be the one song that can be sung by a male artist that has the line "I am Woman...." Beautiful song. His duet with bonnie Rait is my favorite but thanks for this. I actually live just about thirty miles north of Paradise in Muhlenburg Co. KY where the song Paradise was written about. I saw him live a few years ago in Evansville , IN and he talked about how he would drive through as a kid on the way to Kentucky. A Treasure. I took my son for his first show...

  • This is possibly the best song ever written. I STILL don't know how he came up with this perspective. The depth and breadth of it's female character is incredible. I hate to question his brilliance but seriously...HOW DID YOU DO THAT??

  • @nowonderI4get I think the same thing as I listen, perhaps his own mother was his inspiration. Perhaps?

  • @nowonderI4get If you have to ask, you'll never know.

  • thanks for putting this on. I am so homesick I could die. But this helps me. I love the bluegrass state more than anything.

  • @mcmullin1981 well ky hasnt changed much still not much work out here in the styx 2 days from anywhere

  • Im not a huge John Prine fan (although def a fan nonetheless) and I hadn't heard this tune in a relatively long time, and I was kinda amazed that I rememebered ALL of the lyrics from each verse in this tune. I mean ive heard and loved the song for a long time, but these 'words' obviously grabbed ahold of my soul at some p0int in my life and never let go. It's just like every line, every word, is just perfect. Truely magical stuff. Im gonna go check out hellllloooo in thereeeeoo now.

  • Damn fine. Hit like more than once.

  • The thing about great songs, even if you only write one great one,is they survive after the writer is gone making them immortal.Prine has wrote 50 great ones. Pity the fool who doesn't know John Prine songs.

  • @seymourbbest Absolutely. Just a thought - I was going to say that the same argument is true of any kind of art, particulaly famous painters and sculpters, heck even craftsmen (im a furniture guy so that came to mind.) Monet created these things of amazing beauty that have been and are still greatly coveted and admired by people all over the world. However, i dont mean this to be a bad thing, but they are static, not completely, but I mean no one is going to re-paint "Charring Cross Bridge."

  • I want to be on right there, right now.

  • music to live by performed by a man who strongly resembles an alley cat...shake twice bake and sip...next track john hartford...screw tv

  • Notice how his singing voice is almost completely different than his speaking voice. He is transcendent here. Simply put here by God to make the rest of us realize that gifts are not always evenly distributed.

  • "...like little airplanes on an aircraft carrier."

That's why he is more a poet than a musician.

  • Prine is true songwriter. His songs are simple, beautiful and soulful. He's a national treasure.

  • My cousin put this on youtube. I dropped in to put it in my favorites and should have known it was you! Thanks so much again for posting.

  • it was written by a man named steve goodman and Angel from Montgomery refers to a last minute pardon in Alabama the songs about a woman who has created her own personal prision and she is waiting for the Angel from Montgomery to set her free any more questions about ust ask

  • @mike14td john prine wrote angel from montgomery

  • @mike14td Steve Goodman was an excellent songwriter / performer. He was John Prine's good pal ...running partner. However, this particular tune was / is John Prine's tune. The bit about the prison pardon is correct.

  • @mike14td Did you go to every John Prine song of Angel From Montgomery and post that he didn't write it?? You are so wrong about this. I don't know where you got your information, but it was very incorrect. Do your research before you invite any questions on this subject. John Prine DID write this song, not Steve Goodman.

  • @mike14td John wrote this after a friend suggested writing "another song about old people" referring to Prine's composition "Hello In There". He was intrigued by the idea of "a song about a middle-aged woman who feels older than she is."I had this really vivid picture of this woman standing over the dishwater with soap in her hands....She wanted to get out of her house and her marriage and everything. She just wanted an angel to come to take her away from all this." according to John Prine

  • @robertlowery1970 This video was on here a long time ago and it was taking off for some reason. I had the ORIGINAL video on my old pc but unfortunatelly I don't have it anymore.

I requested many times by many viewers to post this video again if they had it saved. This is not all of the origanal video that was posted on her but thank goodness someone still had some of it.

I've known John all my life and have been fortunate enough to meet him and be friends with him back in the day.
