Word got out in Baton Rouge that USC had practiced with loudspeakers piping crowd noise on their practice fields that week. Loudest game I ever went to.
The problem was it was a mixed crew of Pac 10 and SEC officials. It was a Pac 10 official that called the BS facemask. Also, they didn't call the false start, that you can clearly see from 1 mile away. Bad bad refereeing period.
I was 8 years old in the stands at this game and I saw the false start, so why didn't the refs who were standing right next to it. Also, even without the false start, it should have been offsetting penalties due to intentional grounding on the part of the USC QB. It's really no use crying over spilt milk, though. Besides, I'm sure LSU has probably won a few games over the years due to missed or bad calls so it all evens out in the end. We got our revenge in '84 anyway. 23-3 in the Coliseum.
I was there and it was the greatest game ever played. In the age of replay, the outcome would have been different.Clearly the right offensive lineman moved. Why such an obvious penalty was not called and such an incidental one was. The QB was going to get sacked and the face mask made NO DIFFERENCE. This game illustrates why we need instant replay and the BCS system. Without it, the preference for west coast teams would continue to influence the game. GEAUX TIGERS the 1st 2 time BCS champions!!
No, I don't think it would have been reviewable. If the call wasn't made, then it can't be reviewed. I can see why the refs missed it. It was very close, just a fraction of a second. If you blinked you would miss it. It's not obvious to see at all.
I like how the commentators failed to mention the false start. I'm not sure about the rules back then but that face mask should have been a five yard penalty if it was in effect. Geez. lol.
I noticed that nothing was said about the false start. Games back then were televised completely different then they are today. This game was either the first or second game ever televised on ESPN. I believe it was tape delayed and not live.
OMFG!!! I was at this game and was enraged most of the 4th quarter. The fix was in. fUSC moved before the ball was snapped, therefore the facemask penalty was inconsequential since the play should've been called dead. Pac-10 refs...fUSC.
Hey fuck you. Its not our AD who doesn't want to schedule another OCC game but the SEC's. USC's AD Mike Garrett publicly complained to the LA Times after SEC West title winners Arkansas got spanked at home that he can't get an SEC AD to pick up the phone after 05. So instead of posting over simplifying crap like that how about giving us another shot?
Always good to watch the Men of Troy dispatch of another SEC THUG TEAM.

I'm from Baton Rouge and a lifelong LSU fan, but I never cease to be amazed at the ability LSU fans have to whine. IT'S BEEN 30 YEARS!

It was a false start on the right side of USC's line.... missed call. Should have been no play and a penalty of five yards.

USC was off sides, it was an inadvertant face mask, USC lucks out again. refs paid.
then when LSU went to USC years later...WE DESTROYED THEM!

It was a false start, not offsides

Why did the refs end the play? McDonald got rid of the ball. Who did he throw it too?

Clearly a false start, though. I think the refs are better at catching that sort of stuff now.

Both the right guard and right tackle move before the snap of the ball.
